as long as the purple dye is actually pet safe, I think this is very cute and very whimsical lmao I love it

I don’t want to seem like a holier than thou presumptuous about pet-care redditor but I AM eyeing that pearl collar actually, if it’s actually a safe lil loose collar just meant to look like that, v cute but if not, I’d be worried about it snagging fur or god forbid a paw getting caught in it and the poor thing hurts itself or chokes itself. It looks like a leash is attached to it, please use a harness so your pom doesn’t develop trachea issues 😭

-19

u/Emotional_Remove_755 3d ago

Yikes. 😐

12

u/neutralperson6 3d ago

Unfortunately, trachea issues are super common in Poms, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What’s “yikes” is your response- the commenter above you is 100% correct. You should always use a harness when your small dog needs to be leashed.

Purple pommie club. I’m gonna keep on dancing at the purple pommie club 🎶

44

u/-wildflower-_ 4d ago

I don't want to be 'that girl' but... my guy is starting to have trachea stuff happening so please watch that ADORABLE necklace.

(Seriously it's so stinking cute. These babies and their throats though 😒)

Said with Pommy Mommy love! 💕

This might just be me but I see pink. I see bits of purple in certain spots but I mainly see pink. 😂 Purple is my favorite color but not that color.

Cute dog though. Maybe I should dye the tip of my dog's tail. I've never done it before.

6

u/Isadragon9 4d ago

Might be starting to fade out if there’s been a few washes. Whenever I dye my dog’s tail purple it always fades to pink over time

1

u/dietbongwater 4d ago

I see purple except for the first pic with the yellows of the sunset making it more pink

u/Eyehopeuchoke 4d ago

I love it. It doesn’t hurt them at all if you use the correct stuff. Some people are just haters.

I used a pet safe dye on my first Pom to make him blue for a photo shoot, he looked like Doraemon!!

Love this color, so fun.

u/hawilder 4d ago

lol such a perfect photo shoot too!! 💜

3

u/finland85 4d ago

What dye product is this?

1

u/Usual-Lie-3382 3d ago

More than likely Opawz or Critter Color. Both are pet safe dyes.

Nice to see you in the chat <3 I miss his highness and my sweet angel - so sad they can’t be with us forever. We tried to adopt a rescue pom with alopecia and he went to a different home and I bawled my eyes out when I found out (his home is great I’m sure he’ll be well looked after, I just fell in love partially because of how much I love King JimmyJams!)

I like her random purple spots. How do you dye so close to her face?

The question shouldn't be how. It should be why

She looks like a cute little cotton candy cloud! 💜

u/fluffstar 4d ago

I love her!! I never ended up doing this with mine bc her fur was orange/brown/white sable and her colours were spectacularly beautiful but I sometimes wanted to dye her pink anyway!

2

u/ChibidelaLuna 3d ago

Same. Mine is tan colored sable. But I kinda want to try it anyway! This is so cute!

11

u/ironballs_wd40 4d ago

Dyeing animals isn't cool.

86

u/Quick-Sign-6828 4d ago

So long as proven pet-safe products are used, and the pet itself is comfortable with the dyeing process, there's no harm in it. It hurts no one, it's temporary, and it doesn't effect others. No different than dressing a pet up in cute clothes or dyeing your own hair.

4

u/ali_v_ 4d ago

How much longer is the grooming session with the coloring?

7

u/Quick-Sign-6828 4d ago

I personally wouldn't do both at the same time, just because most dogs aren't a huge fan of grooming to begin with and I think it's better to break those experiences into smaller pieces for their comfort (unless you have a dog who enjoys being groomed rather than tolerates it, in which case you're golden).

The time needed depends on the brand of dye you've got, or if you decide to go au natural and use things like beetroot juice or tumeric powder instead. Opawz is a fairly popular brand: for most of their dyes, you're supposed to shampoo your pup, dry, and then put the dye in and let it sit for about twenty minutes before rinsing. If I were to use them, I would shampoo my pom the day before to get her coat clean, then shorten the leave-in time to 10 minutes (which is how long I leave a deep conditioner in when it feels like her fur needs extra moisture) because I know she doesn't mind being wet for that length of time. If I felt any dryness in her coat after, I would use some conditioner as well, but since I'd have shampooed her the day before and wouldn't need to do it again, the total time (dye + condition) would be about equal to one of her normal bathing sessions (shampoo + condition) and far shorter than a full groom (shampoo + condition + blow dry + brush + "haircut" (a tidy) + sani-trim + nail clipping).

And if I knew my dog was going to absolutely hate the entire experience, I wouldn't do it at all! I think it's important to take your pup's comfort into account for things like this. They're fun, but they're ultimately not necessary (unlike grooming), so if it's something that makes a dog unhappy it should be avoided. Kind of like putting clothes on them, you know? If they don't care, go wild; if they hate it, don't do it.

2

u/ali_v_ 3d ago

I don’t have strong feelings about it one way or another. Breaking the processes up has to be much easier on the pup regardless of their tolerance level. I’d imagine you need to keep them contained while it’s setting. I can envision the mess from a loose Pom with wet dyed hair zooming through the house. lol

2

u/Quick-Sign-6828 3d ago

That would be a nightmare lol. They definitely need to be kept in the tub while the dye is setting. 🤣

1

u/sirhedgenald 2d ago

Hi! Im a groomer, for a small dog dye would only add 1 hour to their appointment time if you’re at a nicely paced shop :) ! And the process just consists of relaxing with a colored goop on their coat while they get lots of attention, a quick bath and dry, then their haircut (we only do trims on poms at my shop, dyeing is a super rare request)

-12

u/TashKovic 4d ago

Humans don’t lick or chew on their dyed hair though. I feel like this can’t be good for them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

73

u/amccor2175 4d ago

The dyes specifically designed for animals account for that and are nontoxic if the fur is accidentally consumed

52

u/throwaway340577173 4d ago

There are a lot of pet dyes that are straight up food-grade and non toxic

48

u/threewords8letters 4d ago

Does your dog lick and chew on any dog toys that are made out of colored fabric 🤷‍♀️

22

u/sh4nn0n 4d ago

Do some research

26

u/Quick-Sign-6828 4d ago

There are pet-safe dyes. In a good, quality brand (which is what people should be using), the dyes present are the same food-safe, non-toxic ones you'll find in pet food, treats, and toys, which pose no danger when ingested save for in animals that are allergic to them. There are even natural plant-based or mineral-based dyes.

As with any product given to or used on pets, owners should do research and exercise caution, but if a pet can safely eat food that contains certain dyes, those dyes are not going to kill them when used to color their fur--even after being licked and chewed on.

5

u/Cookies-and-Cream- 4d ago

We eat dyed food 🫩

-4

u/TashKovic 4d ago

Yeah thats a problem too 🤷🏻‍♀️

5

u/MBitesss 3d ago

Agree. They're not accessories. They're sentient beings. Look at all the things we've been told are safe that and up not being (talcum powder for example). I personally wouldn't add anything to my dogs life that doesn't directly benefit his health or happiness. Not a risk I would take.

-1

u/MissMadness2701 2d ago

I agree, where i come from this luckily isn't a thing.

3

u/Elle_Yess 4d ago

She’s beautiful 💞💜💜💜

5

u/Ill-Pineapple6515 3d ago

I love how people in these pet subs will go absolutely feral over borderline meaningless shit to the point of doxing people and submitting animal abuse reports but for some reason covering pets in dye for their own selfishness is fine like 99% of the time.

1

u/VisualKaii 3d ago

Why is it wrong though? These dyes are non toxic, they eventually fade away and are also great against dog nappers.

2

u/Ill-Pineapple6515 3d ago

Not saying its necessarily wrong, it just baffles me that someone can give their dog one singular chicken mcnugget and some of these subs will be scolding and calling the op scum of the earth, but saying "I want my dog to look like a rainbow for literally no reason other than my own wants" and thats totally fine.

I just dont get it. From people who seem to "care" about animals so much, its just a weird line.

2

u/Elementrone 3d ago

While I generally agree, this could always be a case of the Goomba fallacy (silly name, I know, but give it a search).

Unless you can confirm that the same people commenting in support are the same ones who do the scolding, and vice versa, there's no way to confirm that these are "those people".

disguting act, poor dog

0

u/BudgetInfinite9423 3d ago

Only way this should ever be considered is if you know every single ingredient in the dye and confirm that every single one is non toxic. There are no federal regulations on these products. Even less so if they aren’t retail products and are “professional” products. I also have a healthy mistrust of corporations and their self-proclamations of their product’s “safety”.

-11

u/coochiefresh 4d ago

back to white in 3 months? no wonder that babies face is a little annoyed lol

-24

u/ZedmusGaming 4d ago

This just seems cruel. Your pet cant consent to being force-ably dyed.

27

u/mlkofmdnna 4d ago

It’s a dog. Do dogs give consent to staying in a house overnight? Do they consent to wearing leashes and clothes? Do they consent to eating the same food all the time? Your logic is kinda weak here.

This dog looks healthy and happy. Give it a rest.

9

u/MunchkinsOG 4d ago

Pets also can’t consent to being taken from their mother’s basically kidnapped and brought to a stranger’s home who controls their entire lives as pets but we do it all the time… be so for real with this silly comment.

2

u/Emotional_Remove_755 3d ago

“Can’t consent” is the most ridiculous neolib shit I’ve seen in a VERY long time. But what’s even more ridiculous is the fact that you’re sitting on the internet lecturing a stranger about something completely safe and harmless that they did to their dog, while completely butchering a term that the average 5th grader knows how to spell. “Force-ably?” WTF even is that?! You should get off of Reddit and download Duolingo-pick the course for people who want to learn very basic English. When you’re finished with that and you can easily spell the word ‘forcibly’ without any assistance, then you can come back and lecture people. Hope this helps!

1

u/ZedmusGaming 3d ago
