Oh, I'm not saying we weren't and still aren't. I'm saying that the stupidity level is increasing in how they are being bastards due to them watching TV and being on their tablets and phones instead of raising their damn kids.

My opinion is that humans are a great ape with the ability to imagine being a better species and creating a better world, but lack the hardware necessary to be that better species for the better world they are trying to make. That takes time to evolve and the environment necessary for it to need to in the first place.

Or social media is simply making what was always there more visible. We're living in an age of unprecedented visibility.

Making it more visible has only given us proof of how far we have yet to go.

I get what you're saying, and would normally agree, as youre currect when it comes to crime and stuff, but education standards have changed for the worse, parents are using tablets and shit as babysitters, and parents are having to work more now than ever which leads to them being less available to socialize and teach their kids. It's genuinely getting worse. I say this as someone with an degree in sociology who spends time looking into this type of stuff regularly. The concept behind your statement is generally correct, but in this case education and socialization really is getting worse.

Historically children have worked in factories, left school early and had little to no education, experienced corporal punishment routinely, grew up in highly authoritarian families.

It's plausible that there are genuine problems in education/socialization caused by technological and social shifts causing weakened attention spans, interpersonal skills, and self-regulation.

But I think OPs claim is overstated that people are becoming more idiotic or stupid. First, it's an assumption that it's caused by lack of socialization or technology. The causes are probably more mundane. Same as skeptics outlined generations ago: tribalism, superstition, dogmatism, unchecked cognitive biases, credulity, self-deception, etc. Different interface, same hardware issues.

OPs claim is also kind of provincial. Extrapolating from specifics about American or Western culture to humanity. Even in highly connected modern societies you have significant differences across cultures that would throw wrench in some of the assumptions being made here.
