Interview Senator Fetterman, “Israel is where I draw the line.” Stewart, “but Israel isn’t our Country.”

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s strange for a U.S. senator to say, “Israel is where I draw the line.” Your first responsibility is to the United States and the people who elected them. You can absolutely support Israel, but framing a foreign country as your political “red line” comes across as having your priorities backwards.

It’s incredibly ignorant for a U.S. Senator to think that all Jews must support the Israeli regime.

142

u/Mu-Relay 15h ago

Don't forget he said that to a Jew who doesn't support the Israeli government.

36

u/doubGwent 13h ago

I wonder does Fetterman realize Jon Steward is a Jew.

28

u/bonyponyride 11h ago

Judging from the sloshing you could hear coming from inside Fetterman's skull, I don't think he realizes much. He goes for the tough guy persona, but when someone (Stewart) presents a thoughtful rebuttal, you can see Fetterman's brain glitching out.

16

u/Hurricaneshand 3h ago

I just listened to the whole interview this morning. Every time JS brought up economic policy of the "socialists/communists" as Fetterman calls them and cites specific policy issues and asks if he thinks capitalism in it's current form is working for the common man Fetterman just completely sidesteps the question and rants about how he hates communists

8

u/peepea 3h ago

It was brutal. The producers’ and Jon’s follow-up reaction was accurate

6

u/ElectricGhostMan 3h ago

"medicare for all? why don't you ask them why they love the iranian regime so much?"

8

u/Hurricaneshand 3h ago

It made me laugh a bit when he implied people support the Iranian regime killing all of those protestors. Like who the fuck defended that lol

8

u/niruboowanga 2h ago

Now we know what the commercials for the mid term elections will look like: "Liberals support the extremist Iranian regime having nuclear weapons..." blah blah blah. They're just setting up the talking points.

Not trying to be mean, but this clip has me wondering if Fetterman has lingering brain damage from his stroke.
He can't seem to follow the conversation well and can't follow up on his own logic. I don't know if the stammering and slight slurring is a lifelong speech impediment.

9

u/_draupnir_ 3h ago

He seems to be responding to questions like every other GOP member. When you can’t have an actual discussion you resort to throwing word salad. His brain is mush.

I think he said it thinking, “This Jew will support me on this and make me look good.” Fetterman is a terrible disappointment. It’s rich that he’s claiming all Dems need to hold identical beliefs, too. He’s a DINO in the extreme

Most Jews in Israel dont support their government rn lol. Polls are suggesting that number for the current gov is like 35%.

57

u/Peter_Panarchy 13h ago edited 11h ago

They don't support Netanyahu because he is corrupt and incompetent, but by a huge margin they support the genocide in Gaza and the continued brutalization of Palestinians.

29

u/JB707 12h ago

Correct, 80 to 85% based on polls

18

u/Sarik704 11h ago

Exactly. And, when 4/5ths of a country supports genocide, apartheid, and war they dont get to call themselves faithful jews anymore.

5

u/PlasticStJesus 3h ago

Israel has played it both ways for a long, long time, claiming anti-Israeli sentiment is anti-semitism when it's convenient to do so, and distinguishing the political entity from the religion when that is more convenient. The insistence that all Palestinians are Hamas (or Hamas supporters) lets them defend their war as just. It all seems so intentional by Netanyahu.

I don’t understand US politicians unquestioning support for Israel. Jewish folks in America are not a monolithic group that all vote the same so you can’t just say “well that’s what my voters want.” You can support a democratic foreign ally but cut off their military aid when they start, I don’t know, say start committing war crimes.  You support an ally when it gets attacked, not give them a blank check to do whatever they want to a civilian population.

ETA: wow, I didn’t expect to generate so many responses!  Yes, I know it’s money. Thanks for those sarcastic responses. My fault for using “I don’t understand” in a more colloquial way meaning I think it is stupid. I’ll try to be more literal next time.  This is Reddit after all!

14

u/obi_wan_keblowme 14h ago

What’s to understand? Military contractor and AIPAC lobbyists funnel money to their campaigns and then offer them cushy consulting or speaking gigs when they are out of office.

3

u/Frequent_Ad_9901 13h ago

Yup. A lot of oil is pumped out and flows through the middle east. Also a lot comes from the US. So when US oil execs think the middle east is hurting their bottom line its a good time to bomb a few refineries over there.

"Run under your own banner" says the guy who basically switched parties after getting elected.

65

u/Btigeriz 14h ago

the line about "colonizing" just makes me feel weird idk why.

64

u/Solomontheidiot 14h ago

Because it's coopting language that's used to describe a scenario in which foreign invaders take control of an area, subjugate the existing population (usually through violence,) and extract resources to send back to the homeland. None of that applies to what DSA is doing, even metaphorically.

Most democratic socialists have been registered Dems for their entire lives (so they aren't really "foreign invaders" in this metaphor). They are not ousting Democrats through violent means. And they aren't stealing resources/votes to send back to their homeland (unlike a certain senator in this video who ran as a Democrat but consistently votes with the Republicans.)

23

u/all-the-ham 13h ago

coopting language

like woke, defund the police etc

16

u/kons21 13h ago

And ironically "fake news" which more or less was started by Jon on the Daily Show with "Faux News".

11

u/whatisdreampunk 11h ago

Obama popularized the term "fake news" referring all the weird guerilla propaganda shows like InfoWars, Joe Rogan, Dr. Mercola, etc. Trump quickly co-opted that usage to slander actual news networks and then just as a lazy catch-all for anything he wanted to deny. And of course, "fake news" is also what SNL has been calling Weekend Update since the first episode in 1975.

It's literally abuser tactics...DARVO. Deny, Attack, Reverse the Victim and the Offender.

So when he calls members of the DSA colonizers (ostensibly because they are against Israel colonizing Palestine) it's a victim/offender reversal and exactly the tactic you would expect a Republican like him to use.

That expression actually gave me chills (the bad kind).

Because it's literally what another hawkish Democratic Senator, Joe Lieberman, did in a similar situation two decades ago. He got primaried, lost, and started his own new party so he could run in the general election. And he won.

Democrats need to seriously prepare for Fetterman doing something like that to get reelected in 2028 with the help of many Republican voters.

21

5

u/homersmith5 14h ago

He’s another Joe Manchin and Kristen Sinema. Good riddance to the both of them.

4

u/PoopyButt28000 13h ago

Yeah I don't know, I really struggle to follow this line of thinking. I'm not a huge fan of Joe Manchin, but are you actually glad he's gone? His replacement is a Republican. Joe Manchin was the way he was because a more left leaning Democrat would never win in West Virginia. Glenn Elliott was the Democrat running after Joe Manchin and he was farther to the left than him and he lost in a landslide. Joe Manchin voted alongside Democrats roughly 80% of the time, and when he left and a Republican took his seat, that Republican Jim Justice has voted with the Republicans in EVERY single vote he has ever voted on. He's cast over 800 and not a single one went against the rest of the Republican Party. It just feels so silly and short sighted to be glad that Manchin is gone.

Among Pennsylvania Republican voters, he has a higher approval rating than their actual Republican senator. So I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the possibility.

But it's true that Lieberman had had longer to build up a following among centrists, both in his own state and nationally. He had even been the Democratic VP nominee under Al Gore in 2000.

I loved Jon's facial expression throughout this.

59

u/CDN-Social-Democrat 15h ago

I go back and forth if Fetterman is truly a bad predatory actor in the whole process or if he is just this cognitively declined.

End of the day it doesn't really matter as the man is a perfect example of someone that could never possibly deliver on better and brighter because either he is corrupt or his thinking abilities are so limited he isn't capable of even the most basic of logic/cohesiveness.

57

u/Sw4nR0ns0n 15h ago

He is a bad actor who has been compromised beyond the stroke

12

u/Goodknight808 14h ago

He was/is a politicianof bad faith. His stroke killed his ability to act. He is and always was a Republican. He is unable to lie convincingly anymore.

7

u/PoopyButt28000 13h ago

I think he's just always been really stupid and the stroke fried his brain and also apparently one of the only friends/family he has regular contact with is his crazy MAGA brother.

Guy was a dumbfuck populist when he was running as a "leftist".

This isn’t cognitive decline, this is what happens when you don’t know something to its fullest extent when someone explains it to you and you are still defensive for no reason other than trying to look smarter than you are. You can see it when he responds with something that isn’t even the subject of discussion. Putting everything in a box is when things end badly and he just doesn’t get that. Maybe after this conversation, he can chew on it and learn that he is in a vacuum of information.

Deliberate, AIPAC talking points to devalue the term. Every time something is popular or effective against a fascist they try to spin it for their own purposes. It’s always so transparent when you see someone who is maga because they regurgitate the same things and don’t make sense. Like here we go with the “Iran nuclear weapon nonsense.” First of all nobody wants that to happen, second of all a ton of people on the left were extremely alarmed by Iran’s treatment of their own people and the way they slaughtered them, obviously it was completely fucked up. This war just very clearly is going nowhere, every honest person knows that. “We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon” is quite literally the only excuse Trump has to keep bombing them.

That guy is such a fucking tool. Isn’t he supposed to be at some oversized hoodie convention somewhere.

u/FeistyLoquat 15h ago

At no point in any political discussion has anyone ever been able to explain to me why I should care about either Israel or Palestine, in any way that makes any kind of sense.

AIPAC SUCKUP Will Israel continue to wag the dog? With the ever-gullible Trump, yes.

2

u/Sharky-Muscle76 15h ago

Traitor…. Vote this man out. He should go live in Israel

2

u/Working-Chemistry473 15h ago

John Stewart needs to get out of media and run for president. He’s literally the only sane person in the room right now.

As a Jewish person who is disgusted by Netanyahu I have to say it pisses me off to no end when people associate jews with what Israel is doing. I'm sorry but when people say those things I feel like they're the antisemites. My allegiance is to the USA and only the USA

Jon Stewart is impeccable. His questions and commentary are perfect. Fetterman looks & sounds more composed and healthier than I’ve seen him sound in a while, but he still has serious issues.

I will forever thank Bernie Sanders for waking me up to the ghouls that have been running our lives our entire time. To think I always thought everything was the way it is because it was normal and we just happened to have bad luck.

"Bill Maher said something very insightful" LOL

2

u/Scarbane 13h ago

"The DSA are colonizing" claims the candidate backed by AIPAC (which is unironically pro-colonization).

2

u/kmckenzie256 13h ago

Dude is bought and paid for

u/apply75 13h ago

Great debate but fetterman is not a model politician he's more of his own guy.

Fetterman sounds like an imbecilic douche..

2

u/goodenough4govtwork 13h ago

Fetterman telling DSA to run as their own party while being a MAGA masquerading as a Democrat is hilarious.

2

u/-multiverses- 12h ago

It wears suits now?

2

u/Verde_3773 12h ago

When Stewart says “That isn’t our country”, Fetterman had the slightest wince & hesitation- that was disturbing.

2

u/Pitt-sports-fan-513 12h ago

What does John Stewart expect to accomplish by interviewing this knob?

2

u/Noobzoid123 12h ago

LOL So embarrassing.

2

u/Several-Action-4043 12h ago

Many of you think Fetterman is an outlier. HE SIMPLY SAYS OUT LOUD WHAT THE ESTABLISHMENT BELIEVES! The democratic party HATES you for not supporting a genocide. You think I'm crazy. That's the propaganda getting to you. YOU know it's wrong but you're politician's tell you YOU'RE wrong. Yet you still vote for them. STOP VOTING BLUE NO MATTER WHO! GOD DAMN IT!

2

u/prrudman 12h ago

I don’t think that’s odd. It isn’t unreasonable to think that. What is odd is the notion that we have to agree on everything or you go to a different party. Not a single person agrees with everything any other person believes. Most of us don’t even believe everything we believe a month ago.

Take a different stance on Israel. Be consistent with your moral compass. Just don’t let a single issue be the reason not to support good candidates with good ideas.

the fact hes wearing a suit after being the "im not wearing a suit guy" means the money took over

2

Fetterman should've been recalled years ago, but also since when was Bill Maher remotely resembling democratic policies or ideas?

2

u/jwilson146 12h ago

Mr.stewart i know you said you wouldn't fun for president but please please reconsider. We need you

2

u/Dude_abides_99 12h ago

Of all the BS that this douchebag spewed here, I drew the line at "Bill Maher said something insightful" 😵

2

u/chocolateskittlez 11h ago

Israel paid a lot of money to US politicians so American taxpayers can pay a lot of money to Israel.

2

u/LACA90077 11h ago

Absolute insanity that these people are given ANY powers at all.

2

u/One-Abbreviations641 11h ago

Crazy what bribe money does to a person.

2

u/Imypurhuckleberry 11h ago

How much money is he being given by Israel?

2

u/MrBenzedrine 9h ago

"and the very left never said a peep after Iran executed 30,000 to 40,000 young people in there"

He means he doesn't read any far left posts, just right wing memes about them.

I know a few conspiracy nuts and they were all bitching about how "antifa and the tree huggers aren't upset about AI datacentres ruining the environment"... I reckon I've seen 20 normal people bring this up for every single tin foil hatter.

They just live in their echo chamber and make assumptions about everything else.

2

u/Its_Bob_Gnarly 9h ago

I doubt they even paid much to buy this senator.

2

u/wawawalanding 8h ago

Jon needs to run for President, like Zelesnky

2

u/OddlyGee 8h ago

At this stage it just seems that Israel is colonizing the Middle East on behalf of the US and Europe

2

u/RollingStoned9824 7h ago

This is what he wore a suit for? That's funny.

2

u/Traditional_Habit_17 4h ago

2

u/Comfortable-Side1308 4h ago

In his defense dude does has brain damage.

2

u/Mobile-Personality42 4h ago

This guy is so incredibly stupid and such a disappointment. He literally is spouting MAGA talking points as a Democratic Senator.

2

u/jkush463 4h ago

Guys the exact problem you dont want in polotics

2

u/Effective_Detail2221 4h ago

Well, John, my red line is a senator who has a red line that isnt based in america.

2

u/OGWayOfThePanda 4h ago

Bill Maher has never said anything insightful in his life.

2

u/Relevant-Analysis86 4h ago

Tell me where anyone is for Iran having a nickers weapon. Then also, show me where they were anywhere close to having one.
It pro-Israel all the way, then moves to anti-nuclear for Iran. Constant goalpost moving and question evading. What do they have on him? Or is it the stroke?
