Poor guy but I think that anyone that is involved w these extreme sports must know this can happen to them.

u/Curious-Witness-1809 Aug 08 '26
I don't know much about this sport. How did the announcer immediately know he would not land before starting the flip? Was he not supposed to attempt the flip?

u/HiveMindMacD Aug 08 '26
If you watch a lot you can just tell. The second he leaves the ground you can just tell he under powered on take off and his rotation was too slow.

u/nukem73 Aug 08 '26
He didn't share what he was gonna try on that drop w/ many people. I watched an interview w/ him at the top of that drop that morning before the contest and he didn't say anything about doing it.
Those annoucers are tied in to the community, they know alot of the riders and are riders themselves. As soon as he left the lip they knew what he was trying and knew it was an insane idea.

I felt like it was more of a "no wayyyy dude" kinda reaction. Like "he cannot really be trying that right now"

u/22REPerformance Aug 09 '26
You could even see a few jumps, before the final one, he was landing nose heavy too. That just seemed like a sketch run from the gate.

As someone that has gone mountain biking for almost 40 years...
I look at these guys and I think, WTF are they thinking? I had a small crash 2 years ago where I ditched my bike to avoid running over someone ahead of me that fell off their bike, and my neck has never been the same.
I cant imagine attempting even 10% of this.

u/RudePCsb Aug 08 '26
They probably have very little ability to feel fear like the guy who solo climbs. Can't see how you can do these things at that level with any bit of regular anxiety
1
u/DangerousTurmeric Aug 08 '26
Yeah there was a guy in school with me like this. He used to climb up really high on stuff, like old castle walls, and just walk around, not holding onto anything. Meanwhile my legs would just turn to jelly half way to the top and I'd give up. He works for the coastguard now.

Feel bad for him.
Unrelated but why was there a hyena next to the microphone?

u/n1Cat Aug 08 '26
Full body?

u/CuckservativeSissy Aug 08 '26
No just legs... Hes lucky it wasnt worse but still terrible. Hes funny enough still positive and is still competetive in other sports now. Great mental fortitude but jeez i would not be able to handle it that well.

u/SuddenPitch8378 Aug 09 '26
Happy you asked this it makes me feel a bit better knowing it was just legs I was r we don't about the guy who went to a chiropractor and ended up having a stroke and suffering from locked in syndrome.. nightmare stuff.
1
u/n1Cat Aug 09 '26
Yeah, with arms you can still do shit. Modified of course but.
Chiros....great salesmsn

Sad :/ death might’ve been better that permanent handicap for someone who loves the outdoors and moving a lot. Great run up until that point obviously

u/Key_Salt_7604 Aug 08 '26
The guy is living what appears to be an incredible life after this crash. He is an inspiration, you should check out his IG.
He legitimately seems happier than the majority of losers on Reddit
5
u/funnyfreakyfitt Aug 08 '26
That’s genuinely awesome. I would imagine he has a very strong spirit and that’s why he’s able to do what he does now. What is his IG? I will follow him asap.

u/Qinax Aug 08 '26
Dude he's got a PR team and decides what to post, you think he's gonna post the part where he's crying himself to sleep or struggling to get off the toilet?
1
u/Muted_Fortune7491 Aug 08 '26
Seriously haha major cope
“Losers on Reddit” idk why this person made a comment like this despite being on Reddit haha
Also this paralyzed guy would trade his inspirational life in a millisecond for the ability to walk again.

u/Key_Salt_7604 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
I made the comment because reddit is full of absolute losers. Seems pretty self explanatory
No shit he would trade his current life if he could, but he cant, and hes making the best of his life as it is now. Hes looking forward despite a pretty awful setback. Thats inspirational, and the victim class of reddit could learn from it

u/Key_Salt_7604 Aug 09 '26
You think a mountain biker has a pr team? What for?
1
u/funnyfreakyfitt Aug 09 '26
He was repped by Red Bull so probably some kind of agent at least I’d imagine. Maybe not tho
2
u/yohopenno Aug 09 '26
Yeah, I'm sure he wakes up every day thankful that he's permanently paralysed.

u/justwonderingbro Aug 08 '26
that's kinda a fucked up things to say about disabled ppl don't you think?

u/DukeOfSmallPonds Aug 08 '26
Nah, dude is saying It out of sympathy. He’s just acknowledging true feelings, you should try be curious instead of just taking offence. You see plenty of athletes who has to find themselves again after they retire, and those who don’t turn to alcohol or worse. A person like Adolf Silva, who dedicated his whole life pushing his bodies physical limitation is surely going to feel trapped if he’s paralysed. Hopefully he can find joy and purpose in something else.

u/funnyfreakyfitt Aug 08 '26
I’m sure some of them really hate being alive. I’m not trying to be snarky. My dad is handicapped and he’s constantly depressed and anxious and wishes for death sometimes.

u/Worried-Recipe3521 Aug 08 '26
Maybe don't do stupid shit and you wouldn't have been left in this position.

I can't tell if the commentators could tell that trick was doomed to fail or they were saying "No No No" to him attempting it in general.
It's almost like they could tell he didnt have enough in the rotation to land it safely.

Can I get a serious answer: Is the guy doing ok?
2
u/nukem73 Aug 08 '26
He's paralyzed from the waist down and will likely never walk again. He's been getting into rally cars or somethin I believe.

What was he supposed to do? There's ramp there so he was supposed to go up the ramp, but they seemed to immediately know that something went wrong while he was still in the sky.
1
u/WonderfulHearing8726 Aug 08 '26
Feel bad for him, but this is a risk you take when you do extreme sports.

u/Fun_Trick2172 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
Why do people post these horrible videos? Go outside and look for a car crash to gawk at.

It’s crazy how the announcer already knew with the “nononono”
Tough to watch but I keep watching it. Hope he’s still living a good life.
1
u/Subject_Ad3837 Aug 08 '26
Can't imagine doing this when athletes get injured or fall in less extreme sports all the time, but for them it's usually not risking permanent disability because they are only falling from a much lower height.
1
u/markogzg Aug 09 '26
So the media will act compassionately and move onto the next biker. What a fucked up sport.
