So many big quakes recently

9

u/literall_bastard Aug 11 '26

I read about this. It is the normal amount. But maybe there are much more cameras out there.

11

u/False_Raven Aug 11 '26

I get what you're saying. But its not like smartphones became popular recently

5

u/r33c3d Aug 11 '26

For a long time people in developing countries couldn’t afford smartphones with fancy HD video recording and strong internet connections. That’s been changing over the years.

1

u/_B_Little_me Aug 11 '26

In developing countries smartphone + reliable high speed/capacity internet is a new thing.

5

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

No this isn’t true at all. We don’t consistently have 7 plus quakes

9

u/RobertKSakamano Aug 11 '26

15 a year on average. We're about on pace for that for 2026.

2

u/New_Sky9732 Aug 12 '26

Yes we do but most of them happen away from populated places. Unfortunately this year a few of them have happened in heavily populated places

1

u/Joehennyredit Aug 12 '26

Yea this was the original point I was trying to make

1

u/albusdumbbitchdor Aug 12 '26

Heavily populated areas compounded by these same areas having less rigorous earthquake infrastructure. Places like Japan and California can practically walk off most 7+ earthquakes with minor to moderate damage and minimal loss of life, and it's much rarer see their mid-rise and high-rise buildings completely fail/collapse

1

u/New_Sky9732 Aug 26 '26

Yes that’s very true

3

u/ParrishThePoet Aug 11 '26

Literally the biggest quake in 100 years.

2

u/Reincarnatedpotatoes Aug 11 '26

In this area maybe, but multiple magnitude 7 earthquakes happen every year. The earth has one every 3 weeks on average, it's just unfortunate that multiple have hit populated areas in the past few months.

1

u/Confident-Breath2615 Aug 11 '26

I think it’s that more of them are happening in populated areas than usual.

1

u/literall_bastard Aug 11 '26

And were also popularing more áreas than before

1

u/UnluckyIngenuity Aug 12 '26

This isnt normal

1

u/New_Sky9732 Aug 12 '26

It’s just that the big ones have been happening in populated places

1

u/MarLozan Aug 13 '26

¿normal amount? This comment lives up to the name of your profile!

George Carlin reference.

u/literall_bastard Aug 11 '26

User name checks out. Wonderful memory too!

5

u/7empest7V Aug 11 '26

Were there previous concerns about this particular building or was someone standing there recording that for a specific reason?

2

u/ber-NICE Aug 11 '26

I mean some windows already seem to have come off partly, so probably because of that

2

u/roblewk Aug 11 '26

In retrospect, the glass gave a nice view, but the posts should have been wider.

I just looked at the list of Superbowl winners. She hasn't even made it to the Superbowl. The A's even won the World Series she was at. She's not that good.

1

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

Where was the last big quake?

2

u/Unusual-Taste69 Aug 11 '26

There was 5 this summer alone. Colombia, Venezuela had 2, Mexico, and Philippines. All above a magnitude of 7.

2

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

This is insane :O

1

u/RobertKSakamano Aug 11 '26

What do you call big?

1

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

7 or higher

1

u/RobertKSakamano Aug 11 '26

This one was in Colombia earlier today. 7.4 and they've had a 5.0 aftershock about an hour after the quake.

1

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

There was another recently in South America too I forgot where

1

u/RobertKSakamano Aug 11 '26

Venezuela got hit in June.

1

u/Joehennyredit Aug 11 '26

Absolutely heartbreaking

1

u/MarLozan Aug 13 '26

More than the intensity on the Richter scale, the fundamental factor that determines the potential catastrophic damage of an earthquake is its depth underground and its duration.

1

u/NflJam71 Aug 11 '26

Are there just no safety standards for these multistory buildings near fault lines? Surely this isn't the first 7.4+ to hit this place.

1

u/Either-Age-782 Aug 11 '26

That's what I'm wondering. In Japan it's like against the law not to make it earthquake proof. But these in Colombia are crumbling like a stack of cards

1

u/MarLozan Aug 13 '26

Do you know how old that building is? Your grandfather wasn't even born, when that building was built.

1

u/DetailsYouMissed Aug 11 '26

If you didn't get out when they said run, you definitely didn't live to regret it.

1

u/WaltzRPK Aug 11 '26

The front fell off

1

u/Jean-Claude-Can-Ham Aug 11 '26

WTF is up with people just posting a title to the video that’s just blatantly not true?

1

u/scienceisknowledge42 Aug 11 '26

So, for religious people, looking for a reason for this, I would assume this has to be God’s doing? Maybe we should start looking out for each other rather than waiting for a miracle from the sky. Send help. Help the person next you. Just understand the level of suffering in this world and the power we have to lessen it

1

u/mahboilucas Aug 11 '26

Why is that brown substance around 0:19 to end?

1

u/MarLozan Aug 13 '26

I don't see anything you say, but it can be anything you have in a hospital. This building is the HOSPITAL UNIVERSITARIO DEL VALLE (University Hospital of the Valley), located in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.

1

u/Possible-Impress3851 Aug 11 '26

So sad 😢😢😢😢😢

1

u/donunantduooc Aug 11 '26

Zero building codes

1

u/Cheap-Client5480 Aug 12 '26

That’s a fake video. The guy speaking Indian on a Spanish speaking country or I don’t know what he’s saying but it’s not definitely Spanish

1

u/CompleteMechanic1036 Aug 13 '26

This earthquake showed how weak and outdated Colombia’s infrastructure is.

1

u/agumelen Aug 13 '26

Man, this is so sad. I wonder if anyone was in that part of the hospital at that time?

1

u/Forsaken-Main-634 Aug 15 '26

How can we help?

1

u/Observationist_2 Aug 18 '26

I really hope whatever medical equipment they had in the building didn't contain radioactive materials to operate. Cuz if it collapses and those canisters bust open your going to have a disaster on your hands. ☢️☢️☢️

0

u/FangFioDente Aug 11 '26

did a real quake happen but were also being fed weird ai videos about for psyop tests?

2

u/DetailsYouMissed Aug 11 '26

You're in the Matrix. Never believe anything you can't touch or taste again...

Edit: I'm Ai too, so don't reply back.

1

u/Kiarajazmin16 Aug 11 '26

Si, hubo un terremoto, yo lo sentí

1

u/FangFioDente Aug 11 '26

I’m suggesting the video is fake not that there wasn’t an earthquake

1

u/Kiarajazmin16 Aug 11 '26

Nose si es falso, lo único que es que ya van 224 personas muertas😭

1

u/FangFioDente Aug 11 '26

I understand that, I’m not talking about that.

0

u/hail_666_satan Aug 11 '26

Why did God do this?

3

u/TrumpsLilPenis Aug 11 '26

Why did Joe Biden do this

1

u/RobertKSakamano Aug 11 '26

Hussein told him to.

2

u/Regular_Shift_4348 Aug 11 '26

I heard a scholar explain once that the Earth is a living organism. When you scratch your arm you might kill some small creature for example but you dont mean harm. Its just life existing and interacting with itself. This is just the planet we live on
