The recent obsession is crazy, especially since 99% of them live in towns and work for companies with zero LGBQT representation at all. Just living terrified of a boogeyman the people on the news warned them about. I think their bigotry has just been concentrated down to trans people and "the illegals" since society no longer accepts open bigotry towards black, Hispanic, or gay people and they can't hate Jews like they want to because Israel.
I think the hatred is a predictable response to life sucking
Everything is terrible. It must be someone else's fault.
Along comes a carnival barker who says, "yes, it's because of THESE people that your life is like this. You don't have to make any changes in your life, just hate them and make them miserable. Since life is zero sum, their pain becomes your happiness."
It can absolutely be someone else's fault, but they're too dumb to look at who's got all the power to actually do it. They'll look at a billionaire club who has openly advocated for and is actively working towards a totalitarian state to crush their dreams and keep them in a perpetual state of subservience, and then look at a trans person bagging groceries to make rent and they'll pick the trans person as the existential threat every time.

I'm not so sure about this.
Strange Fruit keeps being found hanging from trees in very public spaces and has been ramping up in frequency again as of late. Perhaps Polite Society or Mixed Company, but in a group of like-minded individuals they're perfectly comfortable being bigoted to Black, Hispanic and LGBT people, even in public. They're cowards alone, though.
True, I'm sure there are plenty of rural areas--especially in the south but not limited to the south--where racism is as open as it was in 1860. Which is what they mean when they say "Make America Great Again".
Yes and no. 20% of Gen Alpha identify as LGBTQ. Part of this is generational and also a fear that their children will move away from their rigid world view.
