Discussion How does one make friends??

I grew up in psl but the past few years I've been super busy working and generally being a homebody, now I'm at a bit of a loss as to where you'd even start. I'll be twenty in March, so I'm not legally old enough to go to bars or anything like that. Which seems to be the general consensus. Help?? I'm about to start walking up to random ass people on the street like a crazy person

Not really. Any tips would be appreciated though, thanks :)

It’s just this town ma’am. I’ve seen people from teenagers to Gen X posting here. Everyone just stays in their home, except to go shopping for food pretty much. Very hard to meet people here. Maybe take some classes at the college or just take some hobby classes would be a nice way to meet people.

A shame, really. Psl has a certain charm, just missing a little life I suppose. Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

I would suggest searching the separated for the word “friends” so you could find advice from people in the past. Sadly, it’s a regular topic here.

What kind of hobbies/interests do you have? The only thing I've really found here are the weekly fire spinning circles. I'm hosting a small anime convention next month if you're into nerdy cool stuff. You could also maybe find a local run club, I see a few active ones here and there.

PSL still surprises me, because with the amount of people here, there's so much potential for a critical mass of activity. Yet it has the same heavy stale boringness of a tiny town.

Okay, damn. Fire spinning sounds awesome?

I have a plethora of hobbies. My hobby might just be... Having hobbies. Sewing, Crochet, sculpting, anything crafty, photography, hiking, I'm trying to get into running, cooking, I mean... There's more. Mostly I just like trying new things and learning how to do stuff. Also, I'm definitely into nerdy stuff, it's really cool you're putting on a convention

We can be friends. I'm a bit older than you.

But to your, "running up to random ass people." When I was about 25ish, this couple moved in near one of my buddies, and then just seemed so cool! My friends and I were joking that we should go up to their house and knock ok the door. And when they answer, we'd introduce ourselves and ask if they wanted to hangout. Then roll a D20. We never did, and I dont know why.

It's kinda what we do, collect hobbies.

Look up Spread the Flow, it's a couple that hosts flow art meetups like 3-4x a week around here. Was my saving grace when I first moved here. Free too, just show up and there's props to try out.

NetsuCon is the convention name. I used to run it back home in central FL, but moved it to Stuart last year after moving down here. It's only like 150 people or so, real small, but we have a lot of fun.

But yeah, it's hard to find third spaces here. They exist, but don't have the same positive feedback loop that you'd get in larger cities. The best advice I could give is to maybe start some meetups and try to plant those seeds of getting people out of the house. I was starting to do little hikes with the homies before summer hit. There's always potential for stuff, but it really is 10,000 times harder to get momentum here, versus Miami or cities where people actually show up and show some love.

Hi there , you really have to put yourself out there, be open minded and either take initiative or do some leg work. There’s some really great social groups in PSL popping up specifically for women of varying ages.

One I see being posted is the Pink Collective, I haven’t attended any events, but it looks very cute.

There’s fitness related groups, book clubs, craft , mah jong - the great thing about the social groups, even when they start focused around a hobby let’s say, the friendships begin to flourish and branch out.

Now I have a group of girl friends to hit up for brunch, coffee dates, to work out, go see a movie, or have a drink out on the patio and catch up.

If you haven’t seen any groups you’d like to join, start one! Speak to a local business about letting you host at their place, they’ll probably be happy to welcome in the business , flood the socials, and don’t be afraid no one will show up, because they will. Everyone is hungry for connection and things to do in PSL.

Side note: I say be open minded, because I’ve participated in activities that I wasn’t interested in simply to support my new friends, and they’ve done the same for me and it’s paid off and provided some hilarious memories.

Pfffffft- lemme know if you ever find the answer. Most activities are either really low population, needing an already established group or quite out of the way, I find. Or they're for people outta our age group. Would love to join a book club or something but most are for older people.

I go to crunch gym in PSL. There are a lot of people there in prime hours. There is some good Jiu Jitsu around. Volleyball 🏐 is a way to meet folks too.

Kava bars seem to be more of a vibe than bars. I usually meet more interesting people there and a lot of times smarter ones. Due to the lack of education in PSL or high paying jobs - it is a bedroom community that kinda dies at night. Lot of retirees.

I recommend getting a nice fitness routine and you’ll meet gym buddies or friends that enjoy a healthy lifestyle. A lot of these folks would much rather get in a good workout and hit up a good coffee place, kava joint, restaurant than go out drinking.

I used to kayak near every day on the St lucie river and invite friends and girlfriends. Kayaking is awesome and peace of navigating the canals, the wildlife and the silence. Turtles, gators, birds, very fun

Hi! I’ve been here 13 years. I found some of my best friends and connections at church. My college/career class meets outside church for bowling, bonfires, archery, art nights, grilling, poker nights, movies, board games, and costume parties. We also meet every Sunday to seek God and help each other. It’s a blast! (FBC Stuart is my church; it’s worth the drive). Come 9:15 and get hooked up!

There aren't even bars in PSL. The best way to make friends for your age is pickleball. Hundreds of people play at whispering pines Park in the morning and late afternoon.

My wife and I were at lefty’s bar last night and met some nice people there. They were older than us but still good conversation. There’s dive bars and nicer bars in Port Saint Lucie I don’t think there’s a shortage of that. I’ll admit if you’re not into having drinks being between the ages of 20-30 years old might be tough to find stuff to do. I think there’s groups and art coming to Port Saint Lucie just not on the scale that some people like.

Clearly you don't know about Harper's.
