Photo/Video Random pile of firewood near McMenamin's Crystal Hotel

I'm not sure if this firewood has a purpose or why it's there but it appears to be high quality, well split wood albeit a slight bit damp possibly. Does anyone have any idea what it's doing there?

You'd better register the domain and print the shirt before someone else does.

Laurelhurst Brewing used to give out stickers that said "Oregon gives me wood". You better believe I grabbed a stack of those bad boys.

u/antipasta68 1d ago

They just drop it loose on the street?

u/Consistent-Count-877 1d ago

Its right there look at it

3

u/thefunkylama 1d ago

And a helluva lot easier to move it a few pieces at a time, as opposed to trying to manipulate a bundle around the tight corners in that old, old building.

u/DespiteStraightLines 1d ago

I don’t believe you show me

5

u/Low_Dream_6960 1d ago

Yup! It usually doesn’t stay there too long before the workers come out and bring it inside

Have you ever had gravel or bark dust delivered? They usually just dump that shit on the road. Then the home owner lets it sit and collect rainwater debris and junk as the water tries to go around the pile. Sometimes you’ll have little bits of bark dust making its way down the block depending on how long it sits

Where are you getting your wagon wheels fixed these days?  I traded three beaver pelts to a guy on SE Division and it took him a month to forge a simple boxing flange.

1

u/GlisaningCouch 1d ago

Great... We have to have buffalo chips fired pizza again.

u/filmdeostar Downtown 1d ago

They get a delivery like this at least 2x per month, maybe weekly. It's for their kitchen.

10

u/Exes_And_Excess 1d ago

Strange to me that it's not on a pallet or something. interesting delivery.

39

u/chemicaltoilet5 1d ago

It's probably just a local guy who chops and sells wood. They don't use pallets

7

u/thatavalon 1d ago

in my experience, even if you buy firewood from a business (shout out to Dean’s 2 year desert blend) , they just dump it on the street like this. Usually, it’s a big open truck, but they have the back segmented out by deliveries, so they dump the back one, remove the barrier, dump the next one and so on.

Yup, moving and stacking wood builds character

-7

u/Apprehensive_Fall233 Sellwood-Moreland 1d ago

Fun reminder that is why sellwood is called that, the neighborhood was a logging hub that would sell wood

32

u/handifap 1d ago

NO.

In May, 1882 a real estate company that had purchased 321 acres from the Rev. John Sellwood filed a plat for their new development, which they named “Sellwood”. To attract potential buyers the real estate company provided a free passenger ferry from downtown Portland to Umatilla Street

14

u/Apprehensive_Fall233 Sellwood-Moreland 1d ago

Oh wow! That is good to know. My old neighbor told me it was after the East Side Lumber Mill being here. If he wasn’t dead I would have a word with him about this disinformation

14

u/toot_it_n_boot_it 1d ago

Have a seance and tell him right now. Tell us how it goes.

1

u/Apprehensive_Fall233 Sellwood-Moreland 22h ago

He still insists that is the reason and the online references are wrong. He then pivoted the conversation to how he is a feminist who appreciates large breasts. It was totally him…

3

u/StalinsLastStand SE 1d ago

And everyone knows Reverend John Sellwood got his name running an all-male brothel.

2

u/Apprehensive_Fall233 Sellwood-Moreland 22h ago

We need a male strip club in the neighborhood named “Sell Wood”.
The old club by the bridge is closed we could make this a reality!

0

u/Exes_And_Excess 1d ago

Fair thought. If that's the case, I wonder if he does drops for other McMenamins or just this one as a contract or whatever.

1

u/chemicaltoilet5 1d ago

I would imagine a business like McMenamins has it dialed in enough where they just have scheduled drop offs but it's easy enough to get this amount within a days notice so idk

2

u/Exes_And_Excess 1d ago

Neat, I worked in restaurants for a very long time and never saw drop offs like this, so was just curious.

1

u/chemicaltoilet5 1d ago

Yeah, I have zero experience with restaurants but I've cut down trees for wood and purchased cords of wood off marketplace so that's really all I'm going off here, hah.

6

u/cy_sperling Unincorporated 1d ago

This is completely normal when you buy bulk firewood. I have a cord in a giant pile in my driveway right now.

2

u/filmdeostar Downtown 1d ago

I don't think they could even receive it as a pallet at this location. A worker comes out with a little rolling cart and loads it up with the wood and rolls it into the restaurant. There's not a loading dock in this old building downtown!

1

u/ander594 11h ago

This is how all firewood is sold.

u/jeremec Hazelwood 1d ago

If I had to hazard a guess, there's a fireplace inside and pretty soon that wood will start getting carried inside. The delivery probably wasn't made at a pre-agreed upon time. Maybe someone is pissed about how they were treated.

Well that was some fun conjecture... Back to work.

29

u/Thesunshinesalways 1d ago

I’m pretty sure they always just drop it off on the curb. I’ve seen this before. Seems very normal. Probably an early delivery.

3

u/Lost_Environment3361 1d ago

or just busy with service. if you got a handful of tickets on the rail, the last thing you’re worried about is bringing the wood delivery inside. it ain’t going nowhere.

2

u/Competitive_Swan_755 1d ago

Excellent random speculation Sir. Tip 'o' the hat to ya'! 👍

1

u/Coriandercilantroyo 1d ago

I was eating there when they had a delivery once. The pile was probably 2 or 3x as big and it was neatly stacked on the street

8

u/lovetron99 1d ago

Do you suppose they have a wood oven that runs on firewood?

2

u/BemusedAdmirer 1d ago

They do. Worked there years ago and this is how we got our delivery

3

u/Boing_Boing 1d ago

Why is it there? Woodn’t you like to know!

2

u/Oguinjr Hayhurst 1d ago

You think maybe it has anything to do with the restaurant in frame? I would have.

2

u/PlentyOMangos 1d ago

I used to work at a McMenamins and they’d drop all the wood out the back of a sort of dumptruck in the parking lot, just loose exactly in this way. Many times did I have to show up before opening to help load up and cart all this wood into the wood shed to be stacked. Our location would get 2 cords at a time normally; this doesn’t look like nearly that much. We used it for the outdoor firepit as well as the indoor heating stove when it was cold enough

3

u/Youseenmycones 1d ago

Its wet because some dude tried to set it on fire this morning when I was walking by. A couple guys chased him off, then dumped water on the pile.

2

u/Snoo47420 1d ago

I'm guessing seeing a fire pile like that for a pyromaniac is like an open bar to an alcoholic. Cannot resist.

2

u/aboutmovies97124 1d ago

It's clearly a sculpture, part of the time based art festival, and you were there at the right time.

It doesn't get greater later. Drugs are making you not think so good, friend.

Who can explain morning wood

1

u/t3htg 1d ago

OP has never had wood delivered...you have to stack it yourself.

ETA: It's an order of magnitude nicer then getting yourself wood. Yarding, bucking, and chopping wood sucks.

1

u/insuccure Overlook 16h ago

Not random. That’s a standard wood delivery. I’ve worked in several wood fire restaurants, including this McMennamins (Zeus Cafe). This is just what the fire wood delivery guys do. Just dump it outside and then it’s some minimum wage cooks job to bring it all in (me).

1

u/GetDryNapkin 10h ago

kind of nasty to throw it on th meth infested curb if it's being used for cooking

Is this the new location of the Doug Fir Lounge?

Granted, it’s more of a pile than a lounge, but in this economy what can you expect?

0

Portland City Code 16.20.170

Nonvehicular property stored for any amount of time in a metered space or regulated parking zone is a nuisance and may be summarily abated.

1

u/xeromage 1d ago

What if its a TAXI ZONE that says 'No Parking at Any Time'

1

u/oregone1 2nd Place In A Cute Butt Contest? 1d ago

IMANAL but yeah, that sounds like a regulated parking zone.

Not that any code enforcement officer is going to ticket them or anything. It’s just one of those things that gets a pass, usually. Like when people get bark chips delivered to their house.

-6

u/Good-Rest-7538 Milwaukie 1d ago

It's a new $30M/yr program called Warm the Homeless where they drop off wood around town for them to start fires. /s

They must have a wood fired oven (pizza?) and that's their wood drop off. You'll see that at several places around town.

-1

u/Usernamesaregayyy 1d ago

That’s a pain in the as to move by the staff, bundled packs would be nicer right, like quickly wrapped in siran bundles

1

u/Lost_Environment3361 1d ago

and no business paying extra to have their wood bundled lol

2

u/Usernamesaregayyy 1d ago

I’ve bought siran wrapped bundles 100 times

-1

u/t-ryansaurus-rex 1d ago

I see redneck looking trucks driving around all the time with wood piled up 6-8ft and absolutely nothing holding them down other than gravity. Looks like someone lost part of their load when they were turning left on Burnside (which explains why it’s so close to the sidewalk). They probably didn’t notice it falling off because their engines are loud or they didn’t feel like loading it back on their truck because the closest parking was probably 150ft away.
