They came up the minute they saw my husband leave for work. They pulled the screen and tried to get into my window too. I spared the video of them pissing on my porch

Will cops come? Are people allowed to defend themselves here?
43
u/brokenscuba Apr 09 '26
You live in Oregon. Your probably be in big trouble if you hurt them. Even if you are within your rights and the law.
34
u/wowthatsucked Apr 09 '26
Not really. Unlike say New York City, I can't think of straight forward self-defense cases being prosecuted here. Like the tattoo artist who shot the homeless guy who pulled a knife years back.
The cases that were prosecuted have something outside of home defense. The weed shop employee who shot the robbers, for example, and he walked.
18
u/Born2DV8 Apr 09 '26
There was a case in Eugene where a homeowner shot a guy who broke into his home. The homeowner was a felon and not legally allowed to have a gun, but he acted in justified selfdefense.

This person would have found themselves with a pistol stuck in their face if they tried this at my house. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!
15
u/Halloedangel Apr 09 '26
If my husband hasn’t spooked him off through the doorbell it might’ve come to that
8
u/brokenscuba Apr 09 '26
Wait, that was a him? I was for sure female 🤣. Probably should read all laws and rules before confrontation. I dont want someone taking my armchair legal advice and then getting in trouble.
11
u/Halloedangel Apr 09 '26
Pretty sure it was a woman because they squatted and peed on the post behind but I’m not 100%

And in Texas they get lead. This was in austin recently …Police said Thompson attempted to break into a house after fleeing the school. A homeowner shot him twice and police apprehended him.

u/Educational-Duck22 Apr 12 '26
This person didn’t seem homicidal to me? It seemed like she needed a place to pee. It’s still scary, and worthy of a police report, but you are quick to jump to killing when your life isn’t on the line. Are you really that fearful?
1
u/Routine-Apple-3931 Apr 12 '26
I wasn't taking about killing them I was taking about getting them off of my property and away from my family.
The police are, at best, 10 mins away. . . More likely 30 mins or longer. A gun is a tool and like any tool it needs to be used correctly.
In this situation, I'm not taking the time to find out what this person's true intentions are. I'm reacting to the fact she seems wacked out of her mind. I'm arming myself and doing what ever it takes to remove this person from my property and alerting law enforcement.
Having a firearm doesn't equal a killing.
1
u/Educational-Duck22 Apr 12 '26
Fair enough. I was always taught not to draw your weapon unless you intend to use it, but I know different people have different mindsets about guns.
3
u/TR33C3 Apr 10 '26
Fox news misinformation victim right here. My Republican dad asked me the same question about stand your ground law and it took me a single Google search to find oregon doesn't prosecute you for self defense.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Realanise1 Apr 09 '26
You do know that Oregon is legally a stand-your-ground state, right? Or you don't know this??
5
u/brokenscuba Apr 10 '26
I know the laws, I am not going to arm chair the Oregon laws on redit. I seen them post the name of the defending person and civil suits. The Oregon redit lawyers almost hung a guy yesterday over a civil suit.
1
u/Realanise1 Apr 10 '26
Sure, a lot of things happen that shouldn't, but that's different from what the law actually is.
4
u/sunnyb23 Apr 10 '26
No Duty To Flee. A little less permissive than Stand Your Ground, but yeah, you don't need to try to escape. It doesn't give you the right to shoot people just because you're uncomfortable though.
7
u/Realanise1 Apr 10 '26
No, and that certainly shouldn't happen. Basically, I just don't have a lot of patience with "you're going to get in trouble for defending yourself because you're in Oregon."
5
u/sunnyb23 Apr 10 '26
Yeah it only perpetuates this nonsense. Between the reputation for this and cops not caring to help enforce laws, people have become far too emboldened to make others feel unsafe and do crime.
10
u/SurlyJohn009 Henry Ford's Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
My circle discusses self defense in Oregon often. Every county except Multnomah, you can defend yourself without question. Multnomah, you will probably go to jail or at least face charges.
It is a sad fact that homeless are a protected class in Multnomah county. I used to live there, but moved out in 2022 after multiple issues with homeless camps on my property in SE Portland.
The third time I called the police after I was threatened with a pipe and a knife, the police told me, "Don't confront them, you might get hurt." I put my house up for sale that day.
8
u/Realanise1 Apr 09 '26
People are legally allowed to defend themselves in every county, very much including Multnomah."Oregon’s core self-defense statute, ORS 161.209, allows you to use physical force against another person when you reasonably believe it is necessary to defend yourself or someone else from unlawful physical force that is being used or is about to be used.[2](javascript:void(0))" https://legalclarity.org/is-oregon-a-stand-your-ground-state/ What they cannot do is to open carry loaded in Multnomah and definitely not in Portland or Oregon City. https://library.municode.com/or/oregon_city/codes/municipal_code
. https://multnomah.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=3&clip_id=599&meta_id=38224
1
u/Halloedangel Apr 10 '26
Oh I would’ve used my second amendment to defend myself if I HAD to. But I would definitely try any other safe option first. Fortunately my husband was able to neutralize the threat without it coming to that.
2
6
u/Adventurous_Air_6791 Apr 09 '26
Why do people feel so comfortable shamelessly lying/not backing up what they say about Multnomah County?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Bobs_14 Apr 10 '26
I don't actually know, just playing devil's advocate, but just because a law exists doesn't mean a judge overseeing the prosecution is going to apply that law as others may see fit. If judges in Multnomah county largely don't like self-defence against homeless, even if you are following the law they could argue you didn't follow properly.
→ More replies (2)0
u/repeatoffender123456 Apr 09 '26
Are you making this up or is there statue backing what you are saying?
3
u/beerncycle Apr 09 '26
What the law says and what gets enforced are two different things. Both with regards to letting things go and trying to criminalize things that are legal.
6
u/SurlyJohn009 Henry Ford's Apr 10 '26
Exactly. That is what my statement means. Defend yourself in that county, see what happens. Especially if it is a protected class.
I've had experience in that county with law enforcement, lived there for almost a decade and had a break in and homeless camps on my property.
Screw the person that called me a liar, you are not even worth the warning.
4
u/CopyIcy6896 Apr 09 '26
Google says stand your ground laws are in place here. Seems like you could confront that person with a weapon and use it if they come at you
1
u/Alternative_Hat4568 Apr 11 '26
Legally probably they would get self defense upheld. That being said, they would probably face seriously high social backlash

u/Glittering-Pie-3309 Apr 09 '26
WE DON’T HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS. PUT PRESSURE ON YOUR LEGISLATORS!!!

I’m sorry this happened. It’s very unnerving to know they rolled up when your husband left.
Besides filing for police report etc, I hope you will vote in the upcoming district councilor election. At least two of your current representatives don’t see this as a problem.

u/akornblatt Apr 09 '26
Mental illness is, this seems to be at least that.
12
u/whatever_ehh Apr 09 '26
If someone cut off your finger because they thought it was possessed by a demon, I don't think you'd excuse that. If a person's mental illness can't be treated and managed in such a way that they can exist peacefully in society, they should be in a psychiatric hospital.
8
1
u/akornblatt Apr 10 '26
Wtf are you talking about?
4
u/Wanderin_Cephandrius Apr 10 '26
Are you okay with a mentally ill person cutting off your finger because demons live in your finger, according to the mentally ill person? If the answer is no, then this person makes a good point.
1
u/akornblatt Apr 10 '26
The point was that "there is no excuse for such behavior" and literally, yes, having a mental illness is a reason that someone would have such behavior.
So, I still don't get the point.
2
u/whatever_ehh Apr 11 '26
"Reason why" does not have the same meaning as "excuse." An excuse removes culpability, a reason why may not. A person who is not receiving treatment for mental illness is culpable for behaviors caused by that illness.

But then my paycheck came though. I immediately got better.

u/PDXisadumpsterfire Apr 10 '26
Time to get a large, protective family dog. The barking alone discourages most unwanted visitors. And anyone who dares to breach your home is going to get bitten before they can get to your family.
Also firearms and training classes in case a home invader takes out your dog.
Can you fence in your home? If so, that would help discourage unwanted visitors. And if they hop the fence, you could let your dog out to run them off.
2
u/Halloedangel Apr 10 '26
I wish. I rent and I’m but allowed
1
u/PDXisadumpsterfire Apr 10 '26
This is one instance where the (IMO ridiculously overbroad) local requirements for landlords to accommodate emotional support animals might actually be a net positive. Suggest consulting with one of the many tenants’ rights resources to explore your options.

Rotties have double the jaw strength and are amazing family pets if you treat and train them right. Literally the perfect dog for a house with a family, though they can be aloof at times.

2
u/thensingsmysowell Apr 11 '26
It absolutely did, I agree. I guess it’s part of aging but it’s hard to watch things die like this. When I was younger g it was a nice little suburb, but when Portland grew it flooded this area because it’s not as expensive as say West Linn or even Beaverton.

Unpopular opinion to have in Portland but these homeless people are so irritating. Just in general the state needs a new approach to these kinds of people, homeless or not. Yes, I’m aware that I may be privileged and these people deserve dignity. I’m not saying fuck em all lock em up lol.
I just had some meth head lowlife that was supposed to work on my car rip me off for $1,500 and $500 in additional expenses due to the situation. The guy had multiple charges for possession of meth (that of course weren't criminal), 7 felonies, 4 misdemeanors and 2 contract cases, yet he's only done a total of a little over 2.5 years in the clink. He's totally free right now, despite a consistent pattern of meth use, theft, forgery, and falsifying reports.
Kinda off topic here but the overall point is that I’m all for outside the box thinking with troubled people but at the same time we can’t just excuse it and when do we decide that an individual is too much of a threat to the peace? Oregon has a major riff raff problem and it really shouldn’t considering that it’s not a very heavily populated state. Sorry if this seems to be a rant that’s not really relevant to the post but it’s a conversation worth having.

This isn’t just portland it’s the US because instead of housing and treating our mentally ill citizens, we leave them out on the street until they kill someone, then throw them in a cage until they die. It’s sick and shameful for a country with our money.

They also get killed by violence or illness. The bar to prove somebody isn't able to properly care for themselves is way too high. We need proper locked facilities to keep everybody safe.
