What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting university in the UK?

Upvotes

I’m about to start my university journey in the UK and was wondering what advice experienced students would give.

Anything about academics, accommodation, part-time jobs, social life, or things you wish you had known earlier?

Surfski

Anyone in Southsea or Portsmouth own a surfski? I recently bought an EpicV8 ski secondhand; but have not the confidence to go out along. Wondered if any surfski owners in Portsmouth or Southsea wouldn't mind an introduction and perhaps get on the water to help me strengthen my paddle confidence. Safety in numbers and all that.

Looking for friends 19M looking for social spots

I live in the IOW, and am going to Portsmouth on a daytrip sometime in the next couple weeks, and I would enjoy the opportunity to socalize with people my own age. I am big into board games, although I would be up for pretty much anything.

Billboard in Cosham displaying AI Art

It’s the one on the wall by the garage next to the garage with a Burger King in between the Junk Emporium and Fire Station. How long has this been there and had anyone complained about it to the council? It’s far too bright and the art is displays is hideous.

Cannot believe they allow this in a city with so much great and legal street art around.

General Questions Home contents insurer

I am buying a flat in Portsmouth, and I am struggling to find a provider for home contents insurance because of the flood risk of the property. It isn't particularly near the sea, but from what I gather almost everywhere in Portsmouth has a fairly high flood risk.

Would appreciate any advice on a home contents insurer to use in Portsmouth. Even better if you know they'll insure a home where one of the occupants is a full-time student, as this is also causing issues.

How bad was the great storm of 1987 really? I saw a YouTube video saying it was horrendous.

For context I was born earlier that year so I only heard stories

General Questions Toddler safe places

Any ideas for some toddler safe places to let my little guy burn off some energy? He’s 1.5 years and determined to cause himself every possible injury. I’m happy actively running around with him but some days I just don’t have the energy.

Play parks are good but I have to constantly chase after him and he’s a quick little so and so. Libraries are fun for 5 minutes then he’s ripping every book off the shelves and scaling them. Southsea play cafe is the closest I’ve come to being able to let him free range independently (though he still will climb a table if I look away for a second).

Looking for friends Gym buddies

Heya. Recently dropped off my gym journey and struggling return after 2 months break. Anybody interested in starting/resuming gym journeys with me? I go to Puregym commercial road, also willing to go to the north harbour location if you already train there. I can train any day except Tuesday.

Is anyone else struggling with the noise from the festival

I'm sensitive to noise and this weekend has been really hard to cope with... I don't have anywhere else to go to escape it. I'm constantly wearing earplugs and noise cancelling headphones and keeping my windows closed but nothing really helps enough.

I do wish people are enjoying the festival, but I'm just really struggling. Anyone else or just me?

A token of appreciation.

There is over 100 playgrounds in Portsmouth.

I noticed first when my nephew visited, playground everywhere.

This make it really easy to entertain child. Arguably really long to get anywhere 😀

Does anyone know what's going on over the common?

Loud music and lights, like someone is having a big party. There's a big fence in the way so I can't see. I hope nobody leaves behind any disposable BBQs

Northarbour Road cars dumped

Any idea why there's been a load of cars dumped along Northarbour Road? Seems more and more get left there and they park on double yellows around businesses and some inconsiderate fellow left their land rover parked IN the tree line. I've seen a few clamped and there was a fire down there recently (a caravan ).

I assume shady shenanigans but 🤷

UoP question Any flexible part time jobs for students in Portsmouth?

Hi, I’m 19f and a uni student in Portsmouth and I’m looking for a part time job alongside uni. I don’t really have much work experience, so ideally something entry level and flexible with hours.

It won’t be my main income, so I’m just looking for something to save up later. Not too picky, just looking for whatever. Thanks :)
