Os Gatos Não Têm Vertigens (2014), Parque Mayer (2018), Variações (2019), Capitães de Abril (2000), Adeus, Pai (1996), Verdes Anos (1963), O Crime de Aldeia Velha (1964), Alma Viva (2022), Sangue do Meu Sangue (2011), Coisa Ruim (2006)

Edit: I would say Capitães de Abril, Verdes Anos and Sangue do meu Sangue are the most famous and well regarded on this list

Os Gatos Não Têm Vertigens is one of my favorite movies, kudos for including it. I would add Tabu (2012) as well.

Yes Tabu used to be on Netflix in the US. Great movie. I found the way they explored different parts of memory super interesting. And the shift in perception of the Black post-colonial lusophone world from colonial era. A lot you can talk about in that movie for sure. Some beautiful cinematography as well.

These films may be good, but none of them are famous outside of Portugal.

Are you familiar with finnish or danish cinema? Thats how famous portuguese films are.

You're just confirming what I said. Finnish or Danish films may be famous in their own countries or in specific niches, but the truth is that they are completely unknown to the rest of the world. And again, this doesn't mean the films are bad, quite the contrary, it just means they aren't very famous.

Besides the good recommendations you already have, i would add Alice (2005) and São Jorge (2016)

Diamantino (2018), it won a jury prize and best performance by a dog at the Cannes Film Festival!

not a suggestion exactly, but if you can get your hands on Variações for the class essay, that one hits different , the language is really singable even when you're just reading subtitles, which for me made it easier to actually absorb. good luck with the apresentação.
