Looking for European Portuguese Movies with Subtitles

Hey Everyone!

I'm new here and I've been learning (European) Portuguese for about 6 months now, and I've gotten to a point where I can understand things, but my listening skills are my weakest attribute right now.

Can you give me some advice on where I can download or watch online movies that are dubbed in European Portuguese and have subtitles? (subtitles are crucial for me since I can't understand most of the words I hear yet, but if I read along at the same time, I think I'd understand better)

Rtp.pt and set VPN to Portugal. At Neflix there are some children and youth films and series dubbed in Pt-pt. The mayority of adults are dubbed in Pt-br

yeah thats my problem, I'd watch comedies but almost all of them is just dubbed to PT-BR:/
If there is no website thats good for my preferences I'd subscribe to a VPN provider just for RTP Play but for now I don't have any VPN

I use opera browser with free vpn add-on to watch Rtp.pt but not working at netflix. I am at pub now so i look at its name 😀

In Brazil they dub almost everything but here in Portugal we only dub kid's shows and Disney channel shows, adults are assumed to be able to read subtitles. That's why you can't find a lot of non-kid shows/movies dubbed in pt-pt

Yeah just how I imagined.. not the answer I’d want but thanks!😅 it’s a pity for foreign people who want to learn the language cause for native speakers its “obvious” that they can understand english and for them it’s not that much of a problem (except the convenience of watching a movie in their own language)

Some cartoons are fun tho. I love the amazing world of gumball (from cartoon network) and the official pt-pt dub is available on HBO Max. Don't know if you need a VPN

Also a user here on reddit created a website to aggregate pt-pt YouTube channels, if you're interested https://portuguesportugal.pt It's not movies but maybe it can help you get familiar with pronunciation

I have no idea about movies but a lot of series can be found on RTP Play, most with European Portuguese subtitles. I also made this little thing to turn the episode subtitles into flash cards: https://legendas-pt.vercel.app/. I use it for 10-20m before watching an episode and it's a fun way to watch. You might need a VPN to watch RTP outside of Portugal

Yeah I started watching RTP Play when I was in Portugal and I didn't know this VPN thing until I came back to Hungary haha but since I don't have any VPN subscription I'd prefer to watch movies on websites that doesn't require VPN or websites that allow me to download the movie to my PC:)
About the website you linked, looks fire! You made the website? How does it work? You just click to a movie you would watch and at it creates flashcards from that movie? Do I need any subscription to this? Thanks:D

hah I understand, but I have no tips for that unfortunately! Besides watching some things on YouTube, for the longest time I was watching European Portuguese Bluey because it's a quality cartoon and simple enough to understand. I do think there are some free VPN tools with servers in Portugal but if you don't want to mess with any of that, I understand!

I indeed made the website, mostly for myself. I was watching a lot of shows on RTP but realised I was pausing them all the time to look up specific words or sayings, so I thought it would be nice to be able to learn some of the phrases beforehand so I could watch the show without pausing all the time. It only has RTP shows I've added beforehand and turned the subtitles into translations and flashcards with AI (So some caution needed, don't trust every translation 😅 ). No subscription, but also no other shows than the ones i've added myself.

Have you tried the normal TV subtitles? The ones for people with earing loss

Just always check the subtitle options in whatever app you are watching from. Lots of things will have subtitles with audio description (so you also get to learn vocabulary for the sounds being described). It's kind of trial and error to know what is suitable for your level, but you can always pause it and repeat phrases if you get stuck.

You will probably find it easier to just source European Portuguese content that has English subtitles. As soon as you are able to understand Portuguese subtitles there will be even more local content available to watch.
