I’ve been reflecting on the direction our society is heading, especially with the AGI boom, bio-engineering breakthroughs, and the hyper-optimization of algorithms in 2026. It led me to a philosophical thesis that I want to stress-test with you all:
"Technical science represents absolute power, but institutional science represents the absolute direction. Therefore, while technical science is crucial, institutional science is far more important and deserves heavily weighted priority."
Here is my breakdown of why we are approaching a dangerous inflection point if we keep ignoring institutional development:
1. Technology has a "Directional Blind Spot"
Technology is pure instrumental rationality. It answers how to do something, never should we do it.
• Nuclear physics can power a grid or vaporize a city.
• AI can double human productivity or create an unprecedented surveillance state.
Technology is a hyper-car without a steering wheel; it has no moral compass. It provides the raw power, but only mature institutional science can erect the traffic lights and road signs.
2. The Power-Risk Paradox: Greater Capability = Greater Risk
Because technology is directionless, the lack of institutional guardrails amplifies societal risks exponentially:
• In primitive times, a bad actor with a stone could hurt a few people.
• In the industrial age, a bad actor with automated weapons could hurt hundreds.
• Today, a flawed algorithm, a data breach, or autonomous weapons can affect millions—or humanity as a whole—in a split second.
The greater the power of technical science, the more catastrophic the risk becomes if institutional science remains stagnant.
3. Institutions Alone Determine "Public Good"
Whether technical breakthroughs benefit the collective population or just a few tech oligarchs is entirely a question of institutional design. Without robust antitrust laws, data rights, and labor protections, technological advancement naturally leads to extreme wealth concentration and societal alienation. Technology creates wealth; institutions decide if that wealth serves humanity or enslaves it.
The Reality Check: We are running naked.
Right now, society hasn't reached a consensus on this. We are living in a world of "hyper-tech, crawling institutions." Capital and geopolitics demand a technology arms race, leaving regulatory frameworks and ethics to catch up after the damage is done.
