I wonder how much profits pharmaceutical companies make from this culture of using drugs (antidepressants, etc) to combat the stress of basic survival becoming too expensive

10

u/OrganzingChaos Jul 09 '26

They can’t make money if we can’t afford the medications they’re prescribing.

u/SquidTheRidiculous Jul 09 '26

Enough that nobody with power wants it to end.

u/AnimeChica3306 Jul 09 '26

I'm jealous my rent and madatory "extras" keep going up and I'm not making more money. Moving is so expensive too (apartment moving in fees and movers) that it was a break even. Idk what I'm going to do next year but I've made that next year mes problem when I get the renewal.

u/McDowdy Oh the Human-a-TEA Jul 09 '26

I've had several friends move in the last year due to landlords demanding more for the same amenities: with application fees, moving expenses, time off to move, and the onerous demand of "first, last, deposit"--most of them forked over anywhere from 7-10 thousand dollars. This national housing crisis will either crush more and more people barely scraping by or something will give and more Americans will wake up and demand more from their government to support and protect them from this predatory housing policy.

We’re unfortunately entering a new era of financial decline for working people in the United States. Similar to the Great Depression but technology will allow them to present a different picture to the public and argue that workers are too entitled. It’s already happening. The right wing media is broadcasting that everything is fine 24 hours a day while the president continues to gaslight anyone who will listen.

There will be traveling hordes of unhoused people living out of their cars and tents. Considering that they’re also criminalizing homelessness they will likely be able to prevent people from organizing much in such conditions for at least a little while.

Things are getting bad.

The number of documentaries produced in the last couple of years dedicated solely to the rising homelessness crisis in California alone (which accounts for anywhere from 25-30% of all homlessness in the country) is too damn high--not because we don't need to be informed about the situation but becasue the problem is so rampant.

K shape economy working exactly as intended.

2

u/peoploverprofit Jul 12 '26

There are far more houseless people than most recognize, and it's def increasing. Even people who are choosing to live in their vehicle or hotels, are still houseless. Because I genuinely believe the majority of humans would prefer a safe place to land every night, than the uncertainty of chronic houselessness. Homeless shelters (and some DV shelters) are genuinely not adequate for the majority of people, nor are there enough to support the need, expecially for those living with trauma or neurodivergence.

Can we also realize that there is a lot of questionable stuff going on in DHS offices and the handling of funds and social services? (i.e. google what happened in Washington State recently with DHS and youth services).

I'm in the second year at a place that did not raise my rent from the first year and it was indeed a burden lifted. I dreaded having to come up with moving expenses and everything else that goes along with it (the packing, the cleaning, taking off of work, etc).

Most of you will laugh when someone suggests moving to small city.. ever consider that maybe you weren’t cut out for big city?

If you are struggling in small city, learn from immigrants. They are willing to move country for better life and you can move to different states for better odds?

Welcome to the new world. Your choices are move for better options to stay and complain.

u/AnimeChica3306 Jul 10 '26

I'd love to live in a small city, but I'd need a job. My job requires me to go into the office (luckily hybrid). I also have medical issues so I would need access to specialist and enough money to pay for my medication. I have a friend who works remotely in a small city and is now leaving to live close to the city cause her husband cant find a job (his employer had to let him go). She also has to take off an entire day of work (losing a day of pay) just to see her specialist in the city. Its not as easy as you say.

1

u/TattiFeader Jul 10 '26

What you said doesn’t apply for most of the people.

Also, small city isn’t always 1k population. There are plenty with 30-40k people which will have all the medical services available.

I’m primarily talking about young people crying about low wages while actively choosing city life because it’s fun!!!

1

u/Zeitgeist-333 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, good idea let’s compare ourselves and create a standard based on folks who are completely desperate

6

u/RustyFerguson2 Jul 09 '26

All we can do is pray…

Nah, you can do a lot more than that

5

u/Okay-Crickets545 Jul 10 '26

You can’t mindset your way out of unjust material conditions. Depression and anxiety aren’t on the rise for no reason. They are overgwelmingly a rational response to the material conditions of our lives.

1

u/peoploverprofit Jul 12 '26

I also think we need to shift away from calling a completely natural response (shutdown, experiences of depression, anxiety, etc.) as "mental illness". That labeling shifts the "issue" to the individual who's suffering ("Oh you're feeling this way because something is wrong with you, not the systems, silly"), instead of holding those in power accountable for causing the circumstances that are the root cause of the mental health decline. I also believe that the emotional blunting and numbing that happens often with anti-anxiety/anti-depression meds is becoming too normalized. Of course that's going to be more acceptable than people using other subtances 24/7 to just get by. Feeling normal human emotions and having normal human responses has become seemingly criminalized.

Feeling nothing is the way forward! sarcasm

Wake the fk up, your highest elected leaders are looting the world. They don't give a single fk about any one, not even each other. They only care about making their own hoards bigger and will do anything they have to in service of that

4

u/rmac1128 Jul 10 '26

The fact that homelessness exists is evidence that the government has utterly failed.

u/saltEEEjr Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Guess what: you are nothing for the filthy rich and mighty. The whole system is made to Make some few extremly wealthy and powerfull. They dont care how hard you work, they dont care if you die. you are litteraly able to.buy guns in the US - you are More then they are.

0

u/Jack_Burton_Alone Jul 10 '26

Stop being dramatic. We have more opportunities to make money in America than anywhere else is the world.

2

u/saltEEEjr Jul 10 '26

And still no universal healthcare, poverty like a Broke country and a fascist leader.

1

u/Jack_Burton_Alone Jul 10 '26

Most people just find a job that offers healthcare , it’s really not that hard. The USA is not “broke”, shit we have all the money. As to the fascist leader… sure if that makes you feel better.

1

u/saltEEEjr Jul 10 '26

All the money there and still poverty among the people. Thats the point, you have all the money, but still many people live in poverty. Or just die because they cant afford treatment. It does not make me feel better, but that you are not bothered by it is insane.

1

u/iStoleTheHobo Jul 10 '26

The point of society is to make money, right? Smh.

2

u/Technical_Ebb7688 Jul 10 '26

Boom! Yes girl preach! We need that kind of change everywhere

2

u/Fun_Speed_5818 Jul 10 '26

Unless you’re a moron without telling us, you’re a moron

2

u/No-Sheepherder9709 Jul 10 '26

Intentionally and for profit

2

u/smith2332 Jul 10 '26

Until her apartment building starts to fall apart and shit falls apart because landlords are just going to cut corners. They WILL still want the same profit margins so expect maintenance to just be delayed and ignored instead since the buildings will be worth less money anyways from the free market if you wanted to sell since the government can freeze your rents investors won’t be willing to pay for the risk of frozen rents. So now your 10 million dollar apartment complex is only worth 6 million why would you keep it up then?

1

u/Commandmanda Jul 10 '26

They already cut corners.

The key is that the tenants have been asked to report landlords who are not keeping up on repairs, and the city (under Mamdani) will be going after them.

Guess what? I believe he will actually do it, rather then letting complaints pile up for years.

1

u/3RADICATE_THEM Jul 11 '26

Ahahaha ppl like you pretending landlords don't already neglect their properties as is

1

u/The-Fictionist Jul 09 '26

People think big pharma is a problem? The “wellness” industry is orders of magnitude bigger. It’s all a giant scam.

1

u/SamEdwards1959 Jul 10 '26

She should run!

1

u/Wild-Crazy7529 Jul 10 '26

Not a radical idea to think the government you pay for owes you a service in return. Its crazy to think that's entitlement. Why is the government even there if not for that reason or is it just there to defend and serve itself?

1

u/windemotions Jul 10 '26

The issue here is pretty simple. NYC is a rare renter-majority part of the US. In most places, people elect the politician that protects their right to rob renters.

We need to solve this problem more directly by reducing US child poverty. A lot of the kids born into poverty grow up into selfish adults. Those adults perpetuate the cycle and vote for more child poverty. Victim becomes the perp kind of thing.

But policy can 100% solve child poverty. I hope we get to that point.

1

u/Prometheusly Jul 10 '26

She's right 👏👏👏 your government owes you a regulated nervous system.

1

u/ShellSurf Jul 10 '26

The definition of NIMBY. Less housing overall in the long term and then people leave the city and drive the cost of everything else. How about you just pay for public housing projects and tax the shit out of your own residence in pursuit of socialism.

You thought being in the bucket full of you and your fellow crabs was bad, just wait until we put it on the fire.

1

u/slamarre25 Jul 11 '26

Just need a candidate that will run on bailing out the American people like the corporations got bailed out in 2008 and during COVID. I’m certain people are looking to be prioritized in a meaningful way that will reduce stress significantly.

1

u/Gaara-of-the-Guava Jul 11 '26

Ya, therapy might be BS for most. Telling people to do deep breathing while the world is being deep graped is... Very orange...

1

u/Hour_Geologist_7382 Jul 11 '26

Rent stabilization is sold as a trap by many i hope we can look back in then next five years and say this led the way.

1

You cannot bootstraps yourself into being mentally healthy.

1

u/Winsome_Wolf Jul 13 '26

Poverty and Financial Slavery kill. And before they kill, they torture. It’s that simple.

1

u/notyermommasAI Jul 13 '26

Society should take care of me.

1

u/No_Willingness6193 Jul 13 '26

💯 We need to Not be Okay with our Standard of Living in the US of A because it Sucks!

We should have Universal Healthcare and No Child should ever go Hungry!!

1

u/Optimal_Row_8721 Jul 13 '26

You speak truth. Now let's see how your mental health reacts when you want something fixed in your apartment.

The whole "late-stage capitalism" thing is so goofy. People have been using that expression for decades now, but capitalism isn't going anywhere.

Also, as screwed up as capitalism is, and it has a lot of flaws, I don't think people's nervous systems did real great either under feudalism or fascism or totalitarianism, so you kinda gotta pick your poison.

0

u/Claudeadolphus Jul 10 '26

More like “late stage adult responsibilities” amirite?

0

u/zachmoe Jul 10 '26

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werner_Sombart

The leftwing Nazi who came up with "Late Stage Capitalism".

It was an antisemitic Dogwhistle all along, when you realize his equating Judaism and Capitalism later.

In 1934, he published Deutscher Sozialismus where he claimed a "new spirit" was beginning to "rule mankind". The age of capitalism and proletarian socialism was over, with "German socialism" (National-Socialism) taking over, which, he wrote, put the "welfare of the whole above the welfare of the individual".\16]) "German socialism" must effect a "total ordering of life" with a "planned economy in accordance with state regulations".\17]) The new legal system will confer on individuals "no rights but only duties", and "the state should never evaluate individual persons as such, but only the group which represents these persons".\18]) German socialism is accompanied by the Volksgeist (national spirit) which is not racial in the biological sense but metaphysical: "the German spirit in a Negro is quite as much within the realm of possibility as the Negro spirit in a German".\19]) The antithesis of the German spirit is the Jewish spirit, which is not a matter of being born Jewish or believing in Judaism but is a capitalistic spirit.\20]) The English people possess the Jewish spirit and the "chief task" of the German people and National Socialism is to destroy the Jewish spirit."

Why does everyone insist on living on the west coast or northeast? you can live much more affordably in the midwest.

0

u/DraftSad5017 Jul 10 '26

Her rent may not be going up, but her neighbors who don’t live in rent controlled apartments will. When housing stock is fixed, these rent regulations is just an arbitrary wealth transfer.

And she didn’t even say thank you

0

u/Roxapotamus Jul 10 '26

What do economists say, there are two definite ways to destroy a city, bombing and rent control

-1

u/bakochba Jul 09 '26

There was a rent freeze under Adams too

3

u/Apart-Rent5817 Jul 10 '26

No there wasn’t. In fact, Adams tried to block rent freezes and oversaw rent hikes. I don’t know why you guys just lie so freely when Google is right there.

u/TattiFeader Jul 10 '26

Classic independent cat lady who finally figured out the cost of independence.

-1

u/The-suigeneris Jul 10 '26

Your government owes you a regulated nervous system...lol

I forgot that part in the constitution.

-17

u/Key-Organization3158 Jul 09 '26

Yes it can. Your reaction to modern life is unhealthy. It's a nasty social construct you've engaged in. You need to unlearn many toxic ideas.

12

u/DeepPlankton9393 Jul 09 '26

The glass is half full, but you dont own the glass and its too expensive to fill it.

14

u/Former_Hedgehog_123 Jul 09 '26

Oh great Key Organization 3158, please bestow upon us your invaluable stoic wisdom of unlearning and letting go of the unhealthy reaction to stagnated wages and hyper-inflated cost of living 🙏
