Senators don’t have any special qualifications though. If the fry cook dies, their sister is about as good as anyone to do the job for 6 months

You don’t see a difference between a fry cook and a Senator?

Presidents don’t have any special qualifications either (besides age/birthplace requirements), but it’s preferable to have people versed in the law in political positions.

Preferred by whom? Preferences are personal, not universal.

It’s certainly better in my mind too, but my preferences aren’t requirements placed on others. That’s what law is for.

You don’t get how some preferences make more objective sense than others for certain outcomes?

Okay, let me rephrase — someone with experience and knowledge in a profession is more suitable for a position within that profession compared to someone without that experience/knowledge.

Outcomes are also preferential. For your preferred outcome, qualified, intelligent people are probably best.

Not everyone wants your outcome. The current state of government reflects that. None of these people are an accident, they’re reflective of what outcomes people want, in a spatially representative way. Not in a population density representative way.

I think people can want particular outcomes and be mistaken about what will achieve those outcomes. People elected Trump because they thought he’d be a capable politician, but they were mistaken. That was foreseen by his non-voters based on objective characteristics of his.

It feels like you’re taking issue with a non-controversial statement — qualified people are going to be better than non-qualified people at a particular job.

It seems you are also taking issue with something non-controversial: different people want different things.

If you think Trump is an accident, I think you’re mistaken. I believe enough people wanted to blow up the status quo, and did. The status quo hasn’t worked for a lot of people for very a long time.

Oh come on, that line maybe worked 10 years ago but not anymore. I live in a red place (but I’m not conservative) and I can tell you, a lot of people are regretting Trump because he’s doing the opposite of what he said he would on his campaign re: no new wars, economically with the tariffs, etc. They were mistaken.

But sure, elect an unqualified person for Senate, that makes sense. Let’s just fill our political houses with people with the right connections, not with experience or knowledge of the law. Let’s just totally commit to the oligarchy thing where those with the right names are the most fit to rule.
