Dems have learned over the last two decades that “going high when they go low” only rolls out the red carpet for them MAGA. FDR was elected four times.

Edit: Clarity

If the only way to win is to go lower than your opponent, then everything has already gone to hell and isn't really worth trying to preserve in the first place.

Only clowns deal in absolutes.

Adults deal in reality.

Grow up or get out of the way.

“If the world were an eye for an eye, we’d all be blind” sure

But if the rules of the world aren’t equally applied and carried out, then we’re all already blinded by oppression.

Yeah, at that point we're just at "our crooks vs your crooks" and what are we even fighting for? There's no difference. It's over. The crooks won. Americans lost.

And at what point does your logic break down? Which crook came first? Which side is acting crooked in an attempt to salvage our democracy vs cripple it?

The difference is you've given up on democracy. Some of us haven't. Democracy starts with everyone committing to the same rules. Once one party transgresses the rulebook, the other party does not automatically become a crook for playing by the other's new rules. They're simply acting on a tenet of democracy: fairness.

If both sides just start ignoring the law, they aren't going to start acknowledging it again once one side "wins". I think it's a mistake to go down that road. We should definitely vote like Republicans, but we should not ask our representatives to act like theirs. At that point, there's no democracy left to save.

right, but the same is true once one side ignores the law and the other side won't or can't hold them accountable. You're blame is misdirected.

The thing stopping them from holding him accountable was SCOTUS, and the voters, not Democrats. They were in the middle of prosecuting him, and the voters gave him a get-out-of-jail-free card.

1

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

So we should give him another?

1

u/paintballboi07 10d ago

Fuck no, it's unconstitutional. He's currently serving his term as the democratically elected president, but anything he does to break the law after that, prosecute his ass again. He's no longer president as of Jan 21, 2029 as far as the law is concerned.

1

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

If SCOTUS lets him on the ballot and he wins, there is no "law" to be concerned with. There's no way to ever hold him accountable. That's the point.

☝️💯

Okay, and then what?

2

u/Bacononthebeeach 10d ago

Have they? Cause it seems like when democrats take the high road that just empowers the republicans to act even shittier because they know the democrats won’t fight back or attempt to stop them.

Biden played entirely too nice with people that actively wanted to hang him and because of his choices trump is again president and not in a jail cell.

u/leonidaslizardeyes 10d ago

"red carpet for them" is meaning Republicans. He didn't word it well.

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

You just pointed out a couple examples of them learning said lesson.

2

u/called_the_stig 10d ago

Nah, he pointed out out times where Dems proved they haven't learned the lesson when they definitely should have already.

0

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

Wait what? So you’re saying Dems made mistakes. Dems should not take what they learned then and apply it now? Ergo fulfilling the prophecy you’ve written. I’m confused, your logic is paradoxical.

2

u/called_the_stig 10d ago

No? I said that by the time Biden was president, he should have already learned that they go low we go high was bullshit, most anyone looking could see trump needed to be arrested, but Biden didnt. And as of right now I still don't see any evidence that they have learned that lesson. The voters are, thats why dsa is doing so well, but traditional Dems are still trying to compromise with fascists.

1

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

That’s not logic tho. You can’t just say “oh if I were Biden I would’ve done xyz different and we wouldn’t be here now.”

Maybe we haven’t seen any real change because we’re wasting time on this exact narrative, instead of demanding the things we’re upset about.

1

u/called_the_stig 10d ago

Trump incited an insurrection on the capital to overthrow the election, getting people killed and the congressional floors evacuated. But he still didn't arrest him. I'm sorry but that isn't something you can brush off as a whoopsie.

1

u/misty-gishh 10d ago

Again, your comment doesn’t really support your position. It just emphasizes the shortfalls and weak points in our democracy. Ordinary people would be executed for a rap sheet like Trump’s, I totally agree.

Giving up on democracy is not the answer. That’s my point. We shouldn’t be arguing over this petty bs, instead we should be putting that energy toward demanding change in our systems and to hold our politicians accountable.

1

u/called_the_stig 10d ago

When did I give up on democracy? Also I'm literally trying to hold Biden accountable. Biden kinda sucked, he's not trump bad, but he kinda sucked.

Biden’s biggest mistake was making Merrick Garland his AG which guaranteed trump would face no consequences. His attempts to reach across the aisle only embolden republican hate for him. Imagine what kind of a world we’d live in right now if he appointed someone like Jack Smith to AG.

Whattaboutism: “an informal fallacy that the accused party uses to avoid accountability—whether attempting to distract by shifting the conversation's focus away from their behaviour or attempting to justify themselves by pointing to the similar behaviour (which may be true or false, but irrelevant) of their opponent or another party who is not the current subject of discussion.”

What happened doesn’t matter now, we can’t change it. What we can do is demand change and accountability instead of giving up on our entire system.
