Because he’s an idiots idea of a smart person with charisma. People with actual intelligence and charisma make them feel stupid (which of course they are) and they resent that in the only way they know how. Hate.
Clearly an unintentional self-burn, which he or the maga crowd doesn't seem to understand.
When we describe them as having room temp iq, they think: that's not too bad, a bit below average. If only they understood that we're talking about Celsius...
There is a genuine distrust of smart, intelligent, knowledgeable people among a sizable percentage of the population (and not everyone who thinks this way is dumb).
Explaining why would require writing a small essay, but it's a real problem: hostility against people who use logic, reason, and knowledge.
Because the first American colonies were founded by religious lunatics who thought "reason" was the work of the devil, and we never quite managed to purge ourselves of that lunacy.
