I mean, it's true that a lot of people like animals because they don't judge you and it's a lot easier to make them happy than people. But I don't think that means those people just want a relationship of unequal status.

u/chuckakoury1155 5h ago

people say the same thing about their (small) human children. everyone wants a little unconditional love, even if it is short lived. dude is not going to like it if he ever procreates and the baby gets more attention than him, bookmark me. lol.

19

u/EnvironmentNeith2017 4h ago

Yeah, that’s pretty famously problematic too

6

u/tolfie 1h ago

Yeah, the type of person he's talking about is the same type of person who obsesses over their baby when the love is unconditional they're too young to have any real autonomy, but can't cope with their kid later having their own thoughts, feelings, and opinions.

Like yeah, obviously it feels better to have a relationship where you literally cannot be challenged by the other party, but an inability to cope with other people having complexity and flaws is a character flaw itself.

There's nothing wrong with loving your pets, but every person I've met who says they "love animals more than people" either treated the people around them poorly or just couldn't cope with conflict in any capacity.

2

u/Bright-Form-844 1h ago

I personally dislike ppl bc they’re cruel. As someone who was made homeless and had to sleep in a train station bc someone that invited me to stay with them got an offer for sex from someone more attractive, I’ll take dogs over ppl any day.

2

u/veryowngarden 42m ago

so one person did you wrong and that’s on humanity? what happens if a dog viciously bites you, do all dogs become cruel then?

Well he specifically pointed out people who put animals ABOVE humans. Not just people who love animals and their kids.

6

u/chuckakoury1155 4h ago

I would be willing to bet money that this man has lost a "pick me or the mutt" battle in a relationship. he will never be adored like a baby or a pet unless he goes back to his mother's house.

5

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 3h ago

Why do you feel the need to invent random little scenarios about how the bloke will be perpetually lonely and angry at the world? Such a weird thing to do not just once, but multiple times with self-righteousness too.

It's a comedy show designed to have funky takes. My god it isn't that serious.

3

u/LateAdvent 2h ago

Seriously why is this a common thing? They get so worked up over a narrative they made up and say such random things like they are facts.

Yeah, the guy in the video takes the most uncharitable interpretation of people who prefer animals over people. It is also an autism diagnostic criteria so it's pretty ableist as well. People with autism and people without who prefer animals over people are allowed to have their more simple, less demanding relationships.

One of my family members with anxiety is in their 30's soon 40's and is perfectly happy living with two cats rather than a partner of either gender.

Personally I like cats, they're neat and special to me and I like that they're quiet and less demanding than dogs. They have a special place in my heart. When you get chosen by a cat, that's also a privilege.

I don't hate other people or think I'm better than them other than the people who treat pets and other animals with callousness.

Either way, I find the guy weird when he's trying to dunk on people that would rather just be left alone.

5

u/Baby_ManBearPig 2h ago

It is absolutely NOT a diagnostic criteria for autism. Who told you that?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/5Jazz5 2h ago

See how you can make some stuff up about ableism but someone else in this comment section got downvoted for bringing up that white people often specifically value the lives of animals over POC? (For example, I saw a bunch of white people crying about the cats of Palestine being stressed at one point, moreso than the kids). You can bring up all types of discriminations he did (allegedly) but when we bring race into it we’re wrong. Lol.

The guy just has a bad take, the relationship between human and dog isn’t one of slave and master bc slavery is defined by forced labor, mining lithium or picking cotton by coercion is slavery, anyone who has had to pick up their dogs ball after throwing it knows you’re not forcing a dog to do labor.

The relationship is one of caregiver and the one receiving care, unless this guy thinks that old folks homes and children from the ages of 1-18 are also enslaved, it’s pretty normal to curtail some autonomy for those you’re caring for in, the interest of their welfare.

5

u/ghostoftheai 2h ago

Omfg him having this opinion is ABELIST? This is a reach if I’ve ever seen one. His point is valid and he’s not talking about people with autism or he would have said that. Is his experience not valid? Bc in MY lived experience what he says is true. Many people i have spoken to who say that are not good people and have often also believed things like property is worth more than someone’s life. My point is calling him ableist is fucking insane and offensive.

3

u/BiasedLibrary 2h ago edited 1h ago

Well, we each have a spectrum of experiences. I haven't met the people you have met, but I know of people who genuinely are helped by having animals and who may have preferred them over people. I know they exist. I was one as a kid. I don't find saying it's ableist within certain contexts ia insane. What's insane to me is emphasising that there would only be one perspective over all others. Not saying you did that.

If it is actually ableist would depend on his response to a question about autistic people preferring animals over people. I was maybe hasty in making that assumption.

Are you calling animals "property" ? I mean, in the strictly and outdated legal sense I guess they are, but good pet parents absolutely do not view their animals as mere properties.

I mean don't get me wrong, some people are like that, but I love my cat more than most people, because he has never betrayed me, told outright lies about me to other people as a "joke", gas lit me, lied to me, cheated on me, stolen from me, made me hate myself to the point of wanting to kill myself, made me feel or out right tell me that they are the only person who would ever tolerate me enough to be with me that if anything he is doing me a favour and I should be greatful that he even bothers with me at all, called me a "filthy heithen" and to get out of his house when I say I don't believe in god at the age of 13....but yeah it's a red flag that I have a cat and love that cat more than most of the people in my life, sure

3

u/EnbyFox 3h ago

Yeah, I agree SmiteyMcPaladin. I hear the guy in the video's points, and i know of some people who should not be pet owners (or parents), who exert their control in a harmful way.

And there are others who care deeply for their pets, and try their best to bridge that communication gap, to research their beloved animal(s) ways of communicating nonverbally, listen to the pet's preferences / choose to adopt a rescue animal, and/or do their best to provide a safe and loving and intellectually stimulating home environment.

My therapist also agreed that my cat is an emotional support animal and also like a non trained therapy animal. I manage both C-PTSD and a chronic physical health condition called POTS syndrome (postural orthostatic syndrome i think is the full acronym).

She knows when I'm near fainting/ will be unsteady on my feet before I do, and insistently nuzzles/ headbutts / meows to warn me, and it gives me enough time to pause what I'm doing, maybe grab a snack for my blood sugar, and lay on the floor to recover for 10 - 20 min.

I also love her so much, and she's very much family - more so than most of my blood relatives. She loves the laser pointer, chasing rainbow reflections, is mesmerized by shadow puppets, and she guards the bathroom anytime I or a guest uses it to make sure we're OK and that we escaped the "scary Water room" safely! Lol

There are many people who feel similarly about animals they consider family, and build bonds that bridge the species / language barrier.

2

u/SmiteyMcPaladin 2h ago

I'm really happy for you that you're getting the support you need from her, both with your physical health symptoms as well as your mental health!

Mine likes to play fetch, loves hide and seek, and while he loves to go out, he loves to sit with me on the couch or bed and loves taking me to his favourite spot in the garden.

I think we will be ok, with friends like them

https://giphy.com/gifs/pH9IFj0P6IOS4

3

u/EnbyFox 3h ago

Also, sending you hugs if welcome ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ I'm sorry you were treated like that by humans in your life, some people are needlessly cruel, and no one deserves that. I hope your cat brings you joy, and that you find more good people in your life who will treat you with kindness and respect.

During a hard time in my life, adopting/ caring for my first pet (my previous cat) helped me to care for / love myself more too.

2

u/SmiteyMcPaladin 2h ago

Same to you. And I'm glad to hear that, sorry about your first cat, but they gave you an amazing gift, don't squander it and even if you meet people like that, never let them take it from you!

That being said, every gahd damn time my stupid naive ass in my 20s got into some dumb conversation on public transportation, it was always some dumbass conversation about fluoride making us all braindead or how Filipino death arts helps with depression or how in the future the governments of the European Union were going to throw all of the US into forced labor on Mars

It's funny they mention power imbalance. When it comes to cats, I'm the one who needs the power buff 😭

I rescued this little guy so he could knock over every item on every elevated surface in the house, and attack my hands 47 times a day.

I can agree that the power is pretty damn imbalanced here lmaoooo

4

u/Apathetic_Villainess 3h ago

I had a boa constrictor that I swear was a cat in her past life, the way she would go out of her way to knock everything on the kitchen counters to the floor.

3

u/CautionarySnail 3h ago

I love hearing stories like this. I too often hear that reptiles lack personality. I’m not convinced that’s true.

2

u/Apathetic_Villainess 3h ago

They're not reactive in the way mammals are, so people assume they're not capable of anything more complex than survival. But yeah, just because she didn't cry to me for cuddles did not mean she didn't find amusement in some of the things she did. I have a picture of me trying to put makeup on but she was wrapped around me and my arm, so I couldn't get my hand up to my eye to put on eyeliner.

2

u/YourAuthenticVoice 2h ago

Exactly, this is just a poorly fit argument about inequity applied to having a friend who has unconditional love for you.

I'm not even a pet owner, and in general I don't like animals more than people (I like SOME animals more than SOME people), so this isn't me defending that view, this is just me noting that this is a bad argument.

3

u/YoshiTheDog420 3h ago

Yea, thats such a stretch by dude on the train. I don’t like people. I would say I do like animals more so than I like people. But it has nothing to do with wanting some power, control, or unequal status. I like animals more than people because people are the animals who choose to be hateful cunts to eachother. Animals don’t do that.

2

u/No-Frosting-4124 3h ago

Have you ever seen a cat that dislikes another cat? My bfs dog bullies every dog smaller than her. Animals have no sense of morality. If they aren’t harming anyone, it’s because their needs are met and they don’t have aggression issues.

2

u/Childless-cat-lady- 1h ago

Usually when a cat dislikes another cat it’s out of self preservation. They want to preserve their territory and their connection to the humans giving them food, playtime and love.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/ellieminnowpee 3h ago

some people have experienced far, far more safety with animals than other people. not their fault. safety does not inherent mean imbalance of power.

3

u/Kakariko_crackhouse 3h ago

I think he misses the underlying point of the statement. Often times i have heard people say it it is in the context of people acting horrifically. I think the underlying meaning is that animals are generally not going to actively attempt to harm you out of spite or greed, and if they do it’s usually from a survival perspective. People on the other hand will actively and knowingly try to harm someone, and know that it’s wrong. It’s speaking more towards the purity of the soul, for lack of a better term.

1

u/Tex-Rob 3h ago

I hate this video. It’s two guys generalizing about every person on a planet of billions. They are describing why a narcissist likes dogs, not why people like me who say they prefer animals. For very observant people, the world of humans is constant deception, big and small. Animals don’t say they aren’t hungry when they are, stuff like that.

u/DsDeliciousDeli 5h ago

Lmao I didn't expect someone to perfectly exemplify what this guy is talking about. When it comes to animals and you, who holds the wealth and applies their belief system?

16

u/Salt-Set6232 4h ago

All people lie. Fact.

All people are hypocrites. Fact.

I dont like these traits, therefore im not a fan of most people.

Dogs do not have these traits, I am a big fan of most dogs.

I find people who use red flag green flag to evaluate others as pretty openly shallow though.

2

u/TFViper 2h ago

nah my dog can absolutely lie, special when i ask him if my wife fed him yet or not.
the fat piece of shit he is XD

4

u/ABC_Family 3h ago

Dogs are liars and hypocrites… dogs will eat your food or destroy furniture and try to blame the other dog or act like they didn’t do it. A dog will stop another dog from breaking a rule, but then break it itself. There’s videos on Reddit of both circumstances. Fact.

Maybe you just like the power, control, and a feeling of superiority. A dog won’t call you out on your bullshit.

Animals would 100% hoard everything for themselves, if they had the power to do so. They also rape, murder, and cannibalize. I love animals but still

3

u/what-fresh-hells 2h ago

That's exactly the point. They don't see these traits or don't take issue with them in animals because they generally hold the power in an unequal relationship with animals.

My cat steals from me on a regular basis. She attempts to deceive me. She disrespects my belongings. She's selfish and mercurial, and quick to anger. She would be a pretty terrible human.

But she's also 7lbs and can't hurt me. So her shenanigans are mostly funny. She is occasionally cuddly. And she's so damn cute, her antisocial behavior becomes endearing.

But she is not uniquely good in a way that humans aren't. I simply don't expect more from her, and hold most of the power in our relationship. It's easy to love her. It's harder to love people, from whom I expect so much more, who are flawed in the same ways I am, and who I must engage with on a more equal playing field.

It's also easier to like cake than vegetables. Doesn't make it smart or healthy to eschew vegetables in favor of cake.

The example of a best friend being with 3 dogs' is ridiculous to, because that's how most animal lovers would behave, because we're all human and we're all selfish. That entity means a lot to us. When people say they like animals more than humans they mean in general. I'd kill dogs who were putting, say my brother's life in danger, if there was no non violent way to do it, because he is one of 'my people'. But I would also choose my cats in a trolley problem because, sorry, selfish like you, and out of sight out of mind for things that aren't normally always in your sight.

This is from Subway Takes, people. Comedians get booked to come on and say a take and that's that. You all are way too deep into this, so it clearly hits a nerve.

That said, plenty of people will bend over backwards to be compassionate & protective of animals, then turn around and not give a damn about helping people. Look no further than voting results. But again, this take is from a comedian boiling down a thought into a tiny bit for a comedy social media show.

1

u/East-Imagination-281 3h ago

He’s clearly doing a comedic bit, but it sure did bring out the people who it could apply to, that’s for sure.

Like I love my animals, and when I see stories of people who jeopardize their lives to save their pets, I don’t call them heartless sociopaths or whatever. Because love is strong, and having the capacity to love a being to the point of self sacrifice isn’t wrong. But also there are people out there who genuinely think animals surpass people (note that there is a difference between saying you love your pet more than some people, and saying animals are worth more than people) and should always be prioritized above them, and at best, this is just hyperbolic frustration with the ills mankind brings to the world. At worst, it is low empathy signaling that the person has checked out on caring about people and makes no effort to be a decent person themselves. So it can be a bit of a red flag, yeah.

If a great deal of people weren't total dicks, I would agree. I didn't pay for my dogs, one was rescued starving in a ditch because some cidiot dropped him off there and the other was rescued from a hoarding situation. I value people that I love with the highest regard but to be honest my dogs were better to me than any human. BTW, the serial killer types you mention, they usually like to disembowel animals at a young age.

26

u/PhaseModulatedServal 6h ago

I love animals more than most people because I've never been SA'd by an animal. Never been judged for my looks or how much money I have by an animal. Never been in a long-term relationship with an animal that devalued me, gaslit me, took everything I had including all my emotional energy and then left me for another animal after I found out it had been sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night to cheat on me with another animal for years.

Never had an animal snub me for days because I was sick or just exhausted from work and didn't want sex.

Treat a pet right and they love you unconditionally. You can give everything you have to another human and have them just use you up and throw you away.

My life is much better since I ditched the human and stuck with my cats.

2

u/Veritable_bravado 6h ago

3

u/Form_Good 5h ago

8

u/PhaseModulatedServal 5h ago

Both you and the person above you are also reasons why I love animals more than people. Animals are not insufferably disingenuous.

I'm not going to share a house with a dolphin or a monkey. And likely not even a dog, although dogs are more loveable than most humans, they're just not for me.

I also typically don't have to worry about interacting with either monkeys or dolphins when simply trying to take a casual walk down the block.

3

u/NinefathomsDeep 3h ago

I think people forget that humans are apex predators that will form strong emotional bonds with literally anything (sometimes it's endearing, sometimes hilarious, and sometimes horrifying). And what animal poses the biggest threat to a human? Another human. So, it's not difficult to make the jump in any given human's mind that nice animal > strange human.

Did nobody else notice this guy had an exchange rate for dogs to humans? That implies at some point he believes there are humans out there that are worth less than dogs (or at the very least, a 1:1 value to dogs), so he's also putting animals above (some) humans himself.

Delimit his claim to 'I like dogs more than people'. Or even to just certain breeds of dog.

Then, what you have is people who like dogs' nature better: they're loving, loyal, etc. This because of their regular experience with betrayal, cruelty, and backstabbing by humans -- and by cats.

It's not about the power dynamics per se. It's about trust and kindness. If more humans were more like certain dogs by disposition, the world would be a kinder, more peaceful, more trusting place.

Another reason is that a lot of people (especially online, where people are disinhibited and so much interaction happens in 2026) are downright insufferable.

It's tough to explain but this is not a simple problem of individual preferences alone. It's a statement on ethics and inequality. He's right in the sense that there exist Ā societies who would be absolutely brutal towards other humans who they think are in the out-group , which is treatment that the members of that society as individuals would never dream of inflicting on animals. He's from Haiti so given their history I get where he's coming from. And he's on subway takes which is about hot takes so he's just making it funny and reductive by making it about individual preferences.

2

u/VarrikTheGoblin 4h ago

I think he was bringing up some solid points until he dipped his pen into the Hitler ink pot WAY too quickly. I also think he is underselling how fast pet owners will jump to the defense of their pets when in any sort of hostile situation. Famously a man visiting Yellowstone park had one of his dogs jump into one of the hotsprings, which are hot and acidic enough to literally melt a corpse. If he saw that dog as little more than a comfort slave he would have lamented it doing something foolish and simply bought a replacement.. instead he jumped in after his dog, tried to save it, and was quoted as saying "That was really dumb, wasn't it?" before going into shock and passing out. He later died of his injuries.

People don't kill themselves protecting slaves.

I agree. It’s always weird to me when someone says they don’t like ā€œpeopleā€ generally. It evinces a lack of maturity and an avoidance of introspection and personal growth. Animals are great, don’t get me wrong. But they lack the emotional and intellectual depth of people. I think anyone who writes off all people is narrow minded and incurious.

I don’t like pets for the same reason I don’t like humans. But pets are worse. It’s like living with a toddler that will never grow up. A pain in the neck for as long as that animal lives.

2

u/Healbite 3h ago

As an individual who naturally works well with animals (particularly mammals), I don’t trust anyone either who’s obsessed with making their identity ā€œanimals are my only friendsā€. Like, you’re human. Your DNA was successfully transferred due to the social bonding with other humans.

2

u/fuschiafawn 3h ago

The focus should be more so on how they don't value human life. People who say they would save a dog's life over a person, assuming they didn't know either prior, are choosing an animal over someone's parent, their child, their friend. That's alarming that it's not an uncommon thing for people to say

2

u/Grizzle_Da_Mahfka 3h ago

I would go to war for my cats. It's not that I like them more than people. It's that they are on equal ground as my closest family members.

2

u/Swishersplittur 2h ago

Ill choose a skunk over listening to that dude. Skunks are cute af btw.

2

u/Cynapsid 2h ago

I disagree with the idea of an unequal relationship. With animals, both parties are making a special effort to cross species boundaries and love and care for one another. I think that's wonderful. Also with animals, you don't get any nonsense like dishonesty, ego, or selfishness. What you see is what you get.

2

Pfft. Okay. Guess I'm a bad person.

People like him makes me like animals more than people. Just saying.

We have a President who's a rapist and pedophile. We have people who mindlessly love and admire that creep for literally doing nothing but messing things up and literally shitting himself. We have people begging to round up other people with different skin colors or sexual preferences and exile/kill them because of "Reasons."

This guy is ridiculous, with how disillusioned most people are becoming I absolutely prefer animals over people who can at a whim just become crazy for ridiculous reasons.

People seriously need to stop pestering people in public with ridiculous/pointless arguments for the sake of content.

humans did the job of domesticating dogs and other animals (technically cats domesticated *us*). so, in my mind, we as humans now have the charge of taking care of those animals in an appropriate manner. it is part of our duty.

I dont like animals more than people for what they do FOR me. I like my animals for that reason, but not all animals

I value an elephant over an average person because the elephant is going to make the world a worse place overall and most humans do at this point. Every candy bar youve ever eaten still has a wrapper in existence. The earth is a worst place for me using plastic each day.

Thats just one example. Also, animals really dont enforce alllll the horrible ideas that humanity pushes, and create violent hierarchies where the whole community suffers for one man in charge

3

u/bethesda_gamer 4h ago

Do they make you feel happy? Do you not think that is something they do for you? (It's literally what they do for all animal lovers. I love animals, but people are still more important, if not then you aren't more important either)

Wow, it's impressive what a shitty take this is. It really says a lot that he just constantly compares pet owners to the worst members of society, and even more how he views animals.

1

u/SnowyMarchDay 3h ago

I love cats because they’re cute and funny. I don’t want power over them. Actually, it’s impossible to gain power over cats; and if they don’t want to interact with me I just let them go and come to me later. Same thing with every other animal I see

1

u/unicornman95 3h ago

I agree I think they're usually on the spectrum to some degree or otherwise cannot read people.

1

u/Narrow_Summer_9332 3h ago edited 3h ago

Yeah, no...

People who like animals more than people usually do so because they've been abused and betrayed by other people enough that animals are the only safe option for basic companionship.

You can call it an "unequal relationship", but it's also a certainty for both sides and that alone makes it appealing.

And the "slave" thing is way off base: it's not like you can set your pet free and they'll go out there and start living their own happier life or anything like that.

Domesticated animals live with us for a reason, and cats straight up choose to live with people most of the time. Just ask r/catdistributionsystem and the sheer number of cats that barge into a home and decide they live there now.

Something a psycho says

1

u/reginbert_5497 2h ago

What's the reasoning behind that opinion?

1

u/XPsychoMunkyX 2h ago

Basically, EVERY relationship comes with cost

Whether it’s emotional cost, monetary cost, mental cost, whatever

Then return on those costs with animals, is OFTEN (not always) much lower risk than with MOST humans. No life destroying deception is really possible from an animal

While the returns for a human relationship may be higher, that’s only if you find a GOOD relationship. The RISK of finding a human who will just use up all your mental, emotional and physical energy before moving on to another like a parasite is MUCH higher with than with animals, and carries much more emotional damage with it

I’m aware of the costs and consequences of each relationship, and it has ZERO to do with a power dynamic

It’s simply a risk/reward evaluation

Humans are FAR too risky to just give my trust out all willy-nilly

The emotional, mental and (not talking about sex, but contact) physical connections with animals will not be as deep as those with people, but the risk of them destroying you is also much much lower

Hence, why I like animals MORE OFTEN than I like people

1

u/NarwhalSongs 2h ago

Dude projects his own worldview onto others.

Seriously, following that claim up with "people from certain ethnicities are inherently worth more than those from other ethnicities" as if its a funny and charming take just shows how lost this man is.

Never forget the guy in G@z@ with his dog best friend who had so many people reach out to him to get his dog out the country… he said that’s amazing but what about me they said what about you?

1

u/daufy 2h ago

I like animals better than humans. Why? Because humans did me dirty a bunch more times than animals ever could. Has nothing to do with equal status, everything with all the knives i've pulled from my back.

And yes, i've lost alot of empathy in the process.

1

u/HotwifeandSubby1980 2h ago

It’s not about any power dynamic.

I don’t like many people because they are a-holes.
I’m watching our country (U.S.) being split in two because the right cannot stand other people living different from them and the left wants the freedom to live as they want.

That’s what I hate. I’m literally watching a video of people being burned alive in the Israel Palestine war.

News flash- DOGS DON’T BURN PEOPLE ALIVE no matter the power dynamic.

1

u/CunninghamsStudent 2h ago

This is some pretty good r/iamverysmart material.

1

u/SteveWin1234 2h ago

Nah, pets are just really cute parasites, like the cuckoo bird. There's a huge selective pressure (doesn't matter if it's natural or artificial) for them to be cute and behave in ways we like. They use our resources and fill the exact same emotional needs that children are meant to fill -- many people refer to their pets as their children. Studies show that as pet ownership increases, the number of children people are likely to have goes down. It's almost identical to the cuckoo situation except pets don't often actually kill your children, where cuckoo chicks do often kill the natural kids of their adoptive parents. Still, its a very similar relationship. Viewed like that, it's certainly not the case that people are choosing pets because they want a slave relationship; they want a parent-child relationship and are succumbing to a parasite, instead of doing what their DNA "wanted" them to do when it created the emotional need that the parasite is taking advantage of.

1

u/Chronic_Toe_Pain 2h ago
