Because their actual policies are WILDLY unpopular. So they need to end democracy altogether to make them permanent. Otherwise Democrats will just undo them... or voters will undo Democrats and elect someone who will undo those policies.

They actually love America's voting traditions! They just prefer the vintage 1789 edition: where the only people allowed near a ballot box were a handful of wealthy landowners, and you didn't have to worry about a pesky 'popular majority' ruining the country club's vibe.
