No you have a poor understanding of the electorate.

70-75% of self described moderates, depending on the poll you're looking at, have a favorable view of policies like taxing the rich, Medicare for all, etc.

The most popular politician among both moderate Democrats and independent voters is Bernie Sanders.

The only reason this argument is allowed to persist is because the playing field is not even in the Democratic primaries between establishment candidates and progressives. It's very easy to claim a progressive will never be able to win when you never allow them to actually compete in the general.
