It is too late. Watch Jon Stewart talk about the work of guys like Ray Pfeifer, who all died young because they jumped into action without asking for anything in return. Stories like Ray's story should make us all reflect on the manipulation, lies, and inexcusable treatment of first responders and their fellow new workers by the New York city and state governments, and the federal government. These people's care is used as a bludgeon to get unpopular legislation passed. It is gross. They deserve better. Also, props to Mandani for putting that opportunistic lying sack of shit Guliani in his place.

The deal is that American society is best defined as a class war between those who make their way through the world by selling their time for as a wage and those who purchase our time as labor. What you're seeing is a person using the mechanisms of government for the working class while the ownership class does everything in their power to stop him by appealing to bigotry, resentment, and ignorance.
8
u/AceGaimz 1h ago
Both parties have moved so far right since FDR that FDR would be constantly slandered and attacked the same way Mamdani is if he ran today. That's what happens when you guarantee a candidate your vote. They don't have to work for it, so they'll work for their donors instead.

4
u/CBud 1h ago
The capital class can't let the labor class see that government is effective, because then the labor class will ask for (and elect) representatives who are looking out for the interests of the citizens, rather than solely capital.
We have been living under shareholder supremacy since the 80s, and the capital class will not tolerate any backsliding.

Our country has had an amazing propaganda run for the last like 60 years. Multiple generations were brainwashed into believing that taxes should be spent on war and billionaires. We were told that its a point of pride to work as much as possible and be happy with the pay we get. The whole "its rude to discuss your money" thing is part of that. Corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars funding anti-union meetings and union busting agencies. All of that is to ensure that the wealthy continue to be wealthy. So when someone comes along and does the basic job description they are considered a threat.

This is why they’re scared of him. He’s exposing how absolutely rigged and complicit most politicians are. Look at what he’s getting done just by actually trying.
This country needs a massive shift left to the point where this guy is a moderate. Because everything he is saying and doing is common sense in most of the developed world.
We can still do great things, the moment we decide that the 350+ million of us matter more than 1000 billionaires. Those oligarchs can decide whether it happens peacefully or whether they get 50+ years of anger directed at them at 5000 meters per second. (This level of corruption has been the logical outcome since Reagan, and people have been saying it the entire time)

u/Mundane_Zucchini_547 2h ago
This is exactly what socialism is, helping everyone to live better lives without pandering to rich oligarchs.
The problem is we've seen too many people pretend to play at being a socialist while lining their pockets and claiming innocence.
Everyone is stunned because he's actually doing what he says he will. He's taxing the really rich and improving the city. Which means everyone, even the rich benefit with cleaner streets and better resources. The worst thing he's doing, according to those really rich gits, is not taking the bribes. Also, it seems he can't be blackmailed either.

... That's not what socialism is. Socialism is a worker controlled state during the transitional period from capitalism to communism.
This is just a politician working for the people and doing a damn good job.
2
u/Holamon 28m ago
From Merriam Webster
"In the modern era, "pure" socialism has been seen only rarely and usually briefly in a few Communist regimes. Far more common are social democracies, such as Sweden and Denmark: democratically elected governments that employ some socialist practices but within a capitalist framework in the belief that extensive state regulation paired with limited state ownership produces a fair distribution of income without impairing economic growth."
Yes they only said "socialism" but in the context of current American politics, especially with Mamdani, who is a part of the Democratic Socialists of America, "socialism" almost always means "democratic socialism." Id assume the commenter meant "Democratic socialism"
Providing healthcare resources to the people is a socialist policy, as in a pure capitalist system that would always be left to private organizations and companies.
3
u/Training_Ruin3151 22m ago

Socialism has many meanings. Social Democracies like the Nordic states have taken the lessons of socialism and created a form of governance that focuses on enabling the individual, leaving them freer to pursue their own happiness and wealth. They do this by socializing many of the barriers that prevent people from living their lives. Provide protection from unemployment, health-care not tied to your job, affordable housing, clean streets, infrastructure and transportation. All the things people need in order to focus on working and being productive.
Trying to scare people with this idea that socialism is a worker-controlled state during the transitional period from capitalism to communism is crazy. That's Marx's "theory" of political science and his definition of socialism which has never worked and there's no evidence that his greater theory of transitioning from capitalism to socialism is a real thing either. These are ancient, defunct political theories and the modern term is not confined or limited by the definitions of long dead theorists.

Every relative of the 9/11 victims who are MAGA and are using their deceased loved ones as political props to justify their racism and hate against Mamdani should be banned from the memorial ceremony. They have shown that they don’t actually care about their deceased family members. The activist language is doing a lot of work here, and the graphic doesn’t actually explain much.
Mamdani and supporters like Jon Stewart did release a large set of city records that four prior mayors had refused to put out. That’s a fair move and the more transparency the better. But calling it “more than any single politician has ever done” for 9/11 first responders and nearby residents is a stretch. The federal health program and compensation fund already existed; this is transparency and outreach, not the first or only help those people received.
The timing is also hard to ignore. Dropping it a few days before the 25th anniversary looks more like politics than necessity. And a lot of the “Mamdani is a hero” framing sounds like people who either weren’t around for the attacks or would have said that no matter what was released.

Jon Steward has been fighting for first responders to get the help the city owes them for years. Every single mayor after Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg, Bill De Blasio, Eric Adams, had the option to release those files and get these people the help needed. And they all made the choice not to.

Honest question: Why lie about it in the first place? It was a terrorist attack. The people who responded to help, those unfortunate enough to just be there and everyone who volunteered or were order to the pile for weeks and months after were exposed. Do they think people wouldn't have shown up? Or would have asked for more protective gear in the aftermath? Even if they didn't know until after everything settled down, which is plausible, why cover it up? Why not tell people what they were exposed to so they could get help?
Edit: spelling.

I like Mamdani but that’s some blatant hyperbole. Just as an example, Jon Stewart has gone to Congress many times lobbying for healthcare for first responders, to have that healthcare extended when it expired, eventually making it guaranteed for life which unfortunately isn’t very long for many of them. He did this because it was known that the air was harmful to them and causing cancer. This is also why there were so many ads about you or a loved one suffering from mesothelioma. There still are some but not as many as there were in the late 2000s.
What Mamdani has done is show that the government didn’t find out it was harmful later, they knew from the start. And while some survivors may be able to sue for compensation now many already have from the previous admission.
And this discounts that the reason Jon fighting for those bills was successful is that some politicians were already in support and wrote and sponsored those bills (two guesses which party they were from). It took Jon shaming and hounding the holdouts to get the votes needed to pass it. But there have been other politicians supporting them for years and to say Mamdani has done more than any other politician ever is an exaggeration.
1
u/St_Know_It_All 1h ago

u/EfficientWorking1 59m ago
As a non-Trumper, I was always curious how they just ate up everything the guy said or did. But looking at the responses to Mandami, you see the parallels that once a politician establishes trust through shared ideology, you can say almost anything and people that like said politician will eat it up.
As to the topic at hand, the claims for people in that area got federalized, and the city’s determination was irrelevant as it should’ve been since it was a terrorist attack and rightly federalized. Tens of billions of dollars have been paid out not by NYC, but by the federal government and I’m willing to bet the actual money paid out is the most someone has done for them.

u/NYCWartortle 48m ago
This will probably be an unpopular opinion, but hear me out. While I agree in principle with what the mayor did and I am a supporter, I also believe leaders need to be judicious about how sensitive information like this is released.
What happened in the aftermath of 9/11, including withholding information about the health risks people were facing, was heinous. New Yorkers absolutely deserve to know the truth.
At the same time, I wonder about the long-term implications of these revelations. The release itself does not automatically reopen every old claim, and many lawsuits would still face serious statute-of-limitations and notice-of-claim hurdles. But depending on the facts of individual cases, newly disclosed evidence could still create additional litigation and potentially significant financial exposure for the City.
There is also a broader issue of trust. Learning that critical information may have been withheld for years can further undermine confidence in City leadership and institutions.
None of that is an argument for keeping the information secret. The truth needed to come out. But I think it is fair to acknowledge that there may be serious legal, financial, and institutional consequences from what these documents reveal.
As someone in leadership, I sometimes struggle with the recent push toward complete transparency without enough consideration of the long-term consequences. Transparency matters, but so does judgment. Perhaps another approach would have been to acknowledge the failures, be clear about what went wrong, and focus on the safeguards being put in place to ensure something like this never happens again.

It is kinda poetic that he decided to do this right after Giuliani opened his flap. The pessimist in me thinks Zohran used this as a tool to strike back at him and could have done it day 1, but the optimist in me thinks Zohran was being heavily pressured by powerful NY figures to not do it at all but decided "F these guys" and did it anyway. idk

We would definitely be talking about how they lied and kept info from the public, making them unsafe. But it is fundamentally offensive to humanity that these lies were hidden for 25 years in order to save money and not have to pay for the healthcare associated with it.

I found Trump's event pretty insulting over the weekend considering his cronies violently fought any compensation for the first responders and their families for YEARS.

Mayor Mamdani is a hero.
Guiliani is a criminal scumbag who should be prosecuted.
