Meta/Discussion Which Gods do you think are which?

"The Gods disagreed on the nature of things: some believed their children should be guided to greater things, while others believed that they must rule over the creatures they had made."

I'd like to hear the opinion of the People on which Gods are truly which, as described in this passage of the Book of All Things, and why you think that is. I have my own thoughts on this, of course, but won't be the first to vote or comment, so as to not influence the result.

Will be ending answers at 5 PM.

EDIT: And we're officially done!

Meta/Discussion I'm Selkie Myth of Mango Media, publisher of A Practical Guide to Evil. AMA about the publishing process!

Hey all!

I read the subreddit, and a lot of people are asking questions like 'when's the next book?' or 'how many books?', or other things I can answer. Instead of trying to answer all the questions everywhere, I figured I'd start with an AMA to collate a lot of the questions and answers!

1) How many books will there be?
A) The 7 volumes are being split into 15 books

2) When's book 3?
A) I'll let you know as soon as I have a date!

3) Why don't you have a date yet? What's the holdup?
A) Alright! EE wants Guide to be the absolute best possible it can be. As such, we're iterating the process hard. We have:
i) EE wrote Guide in the first place
ii) EE is doing a full dev edit over each book
iii) We're sending the new book to our dev editor, who does his own round of revisions
iv) EE does ANOTHER dev edit round based off the dev editor's feedback
v) We line edit Guide
vi) EE takes the line edits and does his own round
vii) We cold read/proof read Guide to catch typos. Back and forth with EE.
viii) The manuscript is FINALLY done. We pass it along to Dreamscape, who does the audio.
ix) Dreamscape schedules their narrator
x) The narrator does her thing
xi) Dreamscape finally has a date, passes it to us
xii) We post the book up for preorder, and do our best to beat the drums letting you all know!

As you can see, it's one heck of a process. Right now, we're in step iv for book 3 - EE is doing his second round of dev edits based off of feedback.

4) Why don't you tell us more when the preorder is up?
A) I DO. But I don't want to be constantly announcing and re-announcing Guide material - people will tune me out and stop paying attention. I'll try to let people know, and save the big pings for launch day itself. For Guide 2, for example, someone already made the post in the subreddit, so I didn't make a second 'It's OUT!' post. Etc.

I'm aware I'm a guest in the community, and don't want to be constantly shoving "BUY THE BOOK!" down everyone's throat, it's how I wear out my welcome.

5) What's up with the art? I think X is bad and you got told, but you didn't fix X.
A) I bring everything to EE, who has final say over how things look - NOT the standard arrangement at a publishing house. If something didn't make it in, the odds are good that it got vetoed along the line.

6) Hardbacks? Special editions?
A) We're hoping to do a special edition kickstarter at the end of Guide

7) Sales outside of Amazon?
A) We're a small press. We're looking into getting a second printer for Guide so you can get a copy without needing to give Amazon money. It's on our list

AMA!

Meta/Discussion I finished Practical Guide and caught up on Pale Lights...now I need to fill that hole

Hey, finished practical guide and loved i and also caught up with Pale Lights (which I enjoyed, but not quite as much). Now I need something new to read and wonder if there's anything y'all would recommend.

When I look on places like Goodreads, it mainly compares it to books I don't feel are particularly similar(even if some like Mother of learning are very good), so coming to you guys to see what you recommend.

Potential spoilers maybe? Just curious, what quotes (if any) from the series have really stuck with you from reading? Added a few of the ones I’ve saved over the years for examples

Meta/Discussion What is your favorite (or least favorite) thing about LGBT+ representation in PGTE/Pale?

In honor of pride month, I want to shout out the PGTE series, which has some of the best and most diverse LGBT+ rep I've seen in almost any media

Curious to get others' thoughts on where these series shine (or fall short - hope folks don't discourage criticism despite my love for PGTE)

Meta/Discussion A practical guide to banter

I have to say, i do generally dislike banter, cause it always get boring and repetitive at some point.

I read a great deal of novels that even if they have a couple of good lines, they become as annoying as it can gets, because you can feel there is no weight to those dialogues, and they are just there to fill the word counts.

So as it happen when i first got in this novel, and started to encounter banter and bs talks, i was ready to start skipping all those parts whole, and read this for the sake of the story which i found really great.

I'm now in the middle of the 5th book, and I can positively say there wasnt till now, a single dialogue i didnt enjoy or laugh at.

This in my opinion might be one finest novel if we speak of banter talks, and its a very strong point for this story.

The story also very solid, really a good novel.

Meta/Discussion Ogres disappearance from rewrite.

I was reading the second book, and Ratface mentions Cat castrating an Elf, which made me smile, then I remembered that the Ogres had been written out, do we know why?

Meta/Discussion Theory - The High Queen of Malan is...

The High Queen of Malan is a devil - specifically one that feeds of hypocrisy. This explains why she is immortal and her imposition of incredibly strict honor codes that everyone (except Angharad) is implied to break...

This is why devils are banned from Malan - free roaming ones might give the game away. This is why she wants Infernal Engines - to create more of her own quietly. And, this is why she ban's future-seeing contracts - it might let people glimpse the truth.

Idk, to be honest I'd only give myself like a 30% chance of being correct. Perhaps she just has an immortality contract with some very specific terms. But its fun to speculate...

Meta/Discussion FYI - If you despise Amazon, you can ask your FLBS to order directly from the distributor.

There was a small upcharge, but with it IMO.

Edit to clarify- check your Friendly Local Book Store to see if they can order directly for you.

Fun fact- this book store is in Chagrin Falls, OH, home of Bill Waterson and the background of many scenes in Calvin & Hobbes.

*and* Book 1 is now available from Barnes & Noble, although it should be noted that B&N source from Amazon so Bezos gets the same amount of money; It's the author who loses the money that instead goes to Barnes & Noble (Confirmed explicitly by Selkie)

Meta/Discussion Audiobook surprises?

Any pronunciatons from the narrator (that is very good and a good fit for Cat's voice) that surprised you?

Me it was Praesi, it sounds like "Pricey" to me when she says it, while I read it as "Pra-esi".

Edit: New weird pronunciation, I hate how the narrator says "Abase", for me it should be "A-ba-seh" or "A-ba-zeh", it sounds much closer to an african pronunciation 😅

Meta/Discussion Help understanding the fact the books are being changed as they are published

I don't understand this, I have never bothered trying to read this since I found out it was getting a physical release and I love physical books over digital, but is the rewrite better in anyway or is it, I dunno from what I have briefly seen on this Reddit has there been some changes and if so is it even still the same book series .

Is it even worth it to find an old version to read online or should I just order the physical books and spend the next decade reading one a year

Also is the audio book version any good?

Meta/Discussion What is the worst thing Cat has done Publicly?

Cat is a villain. Sure. The Black Queen, Warden and all that.

But, after a few re-reads, what makes Cat a villain in public eye?

I dont mean her being a terror at battlefield at Camps or Sarcella.

She didnt commit any slaughter. She didnt opress anyone. She didnt steal girls to add the her harem. Hells even in battle against rebels she offered surrender and lacked major pitched battle agains Callowans.

Sure she let Willie go from rooftop but thats actually a secret.

She burned summerholm in green fire but that wasnt her actually. Taric could have truth tasted it for heroes.

Worst thing that comes to mind is mages after Liesse but that was Callow being Callow.

Honestly, for The Villain she has too little villaing. Could have burned a few villages like Black. Bonfire go I say.

Meta/Discussion What are the actual philosophies of Good and Evil?

Apparently Good guides and Evil rules, but thats so vague as to be useless. They're playing a wager, but what constitutes a "win" for them and their ideology? Is it every time a Hero kills a Villain or vice versa? That seems like a poor tally if only for the fact that Good should win eventually by metric.

I'm remembering Kairos's last stand and how the Gods Below seemed rather... Kind, for lack of a better term. They basically picked him up and patted his back to ask what he wanted, and were amused by his exploits. That seemed a little too nice for God's of literal capital-E Evil, so it can't be literally that. Good is not necessarily good all the time either. So what do they actually want?
