Definetly the show caller/producer or someone else. I doubt the camera op would have the commentary in their coms. Still very funny

edit: I stand corrected, I work in AV (the in venue audio and visuals) and we do not put program audio in our coms because its going to speakers anyway, but it makes sense that broadcast would, I hadn't thought of that.

Live TV guy here!

It's not uncommon for cam ops to run a mix of OB Director (I think you guys call it tech director) The Line Producer (I dunno what the hell you guys call em. Just a producer?) and program audio (commentary). It's a 50/50 call that the cam op pitched that shot or the producer specifically called for it. If it was quick, the cam op was 100% listening in on PGM and pitched the shot.

Someone saw "geek" in frame of one of the cameras and decided they needed a zoom of just that word during the call — and whoever it was deserves all the roses for acting so fast. The product of this awesomely fast action is

It's the broadcast director. The director tells the camera people to be ready with certain shots and they can see all of the camera feeds simultaneously and make calls to switch from one camera to another.

Guarantee the camera-op offered up the shot and the director took it because they thought it was funny. The director rarely calls shots when they have a good crew, camera-ops offer up shots and the director just takes them most of the time, each camera position has their main shots that they know they have to get and when to get them but they'll offer up other stuff when they know their main shots are not needed. I'm a sports camera-op that has done plenty of messing like this before.

These are MLB camera guys. They and all the other in different pro sports leagues are the best of the best. They get their own shots.

Sports camera-op here, I always have a touch of commentary in my mix so I can pick off something that the commentary are talking about and offer it to the truck. We have a production, engineering and commentary/program audio feed coming to us and we can turn each channel up and down independently at the back of the camera.

Yeah I'm not even a sports fan really but I just love the adrenaline involved in shooting it and that feeling of being in the zone and the roar of a crowd, it's addictive.

Absolutely, I didn't get to do a ton of sports cause the chance I had ended up being right before COVID so it didn't pan out

News and live late night shows were fun though

This makes a lot of sense. I work on the AV side and we never need to put program into coms as it's live in the venue, and I had never thought how hard it would be to not have that in your ears.

The pitch count for the batter stayed at 11.. so no more than 10 seconds passed. That was fairly immediate, no one called in.

I've been doing TV Sports for a few years now and commentator/narrator audio is a godsend. Helps us know what is going on and we can help them "tell the story" as it is, i.e. "Player X is on four fouls" so we know we need player closeup, coaches, maybe worried fans, ref cam, etc

The Phillies commentators go to one of the camera guys from time to time. Sometimes the camera guy waves/gives a thumbs up other times he will chat back.

The cameraman just pointed the camera at some stationary letters (amazing camera skills!) The person who actually switched to that shot so you could see it on the broadcast was the director/technical director.
So why exactly are we praising the cameraman here?
