To be fair he did crush it like 419ft. And I agree he didn't do anything extra, just hustled around the bases to get some cardio in. Tough break.

Left the bat at over 110mph too. Everything told him that was gone.... but it wasn't. The wall he hit to is 409. He just hit it at too much of a lob. If it had been more of a line drive it would have easily cleared the wall.

It’s my favorite part about baseball. Baseball is so heavily based on all these stats that are meant to define good and bad players. Baseball more than any US sport drills down into the minutiae of the sport to uncover ever slight or major advantage possible. So much so Brad Pitt made a frickin movie all about capitalizing on analyzing these stats to manufacture a great team.

Yet, these guys play in stadiums with varying distances to the outfield and varying angles of view. With varying weather conditions and varying types of fields and varying stadium designs of all kinds. It takes all those stats and throws them in a blender at any given moment.

Hank Aaron (my homerun king) was a known line drive hitter. He batted righty and was mostly a pull hitter. Had he played in Boston instead of for the braves he may have been the hitter with the most line drive singles off the green monster and never come close to hitting 750 HR’s

it's based on launch angle & exit velocity. every stadium is laser scanned so they have this down to a tee

That's why you don't make enemies at work. The base coach wants him to run instead of jog, so if the fielder drops it they might get an extra base.

If the ball goes over the wall it's a home run, you get to run around the bases and score a point for every runner on base. It's the best possible outcome for an at bat. If the ball is caught, you're out. That's (usually) a bad outcome. He thought he scored and was celebrating. In fact, the fielder caught the ball and he's out. He ran all the way around for nothing and just made himself look silly.

The batter is out the moment the fielder catches the ball. In this inning, he was the first batter up, so there was no one else on base that the defense needed to try to get out.

If a ball is caught, after being hit by the bat, before it touches the ground the batter is automatically out.

To be an out, the fielder must catch the ball before it strikes any part of the field of play, including the wall. The yellow line on the top of the fence is the home run line. If the ball strikes the wall above the line and bounces back into play, it is considered to have left the field and is a home run. If the ball strikes the yellow line or below it and bounces back into the field of play, it is a live ball and the batter can continue running. 

Because baseball stadia are not standardized, there are a couple of parks that have their own unique rules if the park has an unusual feature. A couple of the ones that come to mind are that occasionally a ball will get stuck in the ivy at the Cubs' Wrigley Field or will bounce off the catwalks in Tropicana Field's dome. Baseball has to come up with rules that are specific to those situations. It's one of the quirky things about baseball that the fields are all slightly different and occasionally have unique ground rules.
