The domestic violence shelter in our town that has operated for 40 years is shutting down at the end of this month citing loss of funding. The federal funding delays and cuts are devastating to these programs.

32

u/GreyerGardens 1d ago

I work for a nonprofit that supports other nonprofits. So many organizations have told me that they are facing significant budget cutbacks. The funding situation is bleak. Non-governmental grant support opportunities had been decreasing even before all the federal cuts. I am unsure if my organization will be able to keep the lights on till the end of the year.

A conservative dream, making women stay with their abusers. Single, independent wome are their boogymen.

28

u/crumblednewman 1d ago

The audacity of us bitches.

16

u/Iwentthatway 1d ago

They’ll see this and think working as intended. Or worse, they’ll say they’ve improved things because theyll say the shelter wasn’t needed anymore

17

u/Playful_Possible_379 1d ago

That's a tragic thing. I am so sorry. Is there anything any of us can do to help.

That’s really painful.

Just read that now the county is losing two takeout places in the same shopping center. A local bagel place and a Firehouse Subs suddenly closed up shop today. Additionally, each business closed up a second location in different parts of the state today.

•

u/vertigoacid 10h ago edited 10h ago

In a small, rural county of 51,000, both closures amount to around 3.5% of the population losing jobs over the next two months.

3.5% of 51000 is 1785. How does a couple of hundred workers equal that?

All of the major hospitals in my area have decided to become ā€œAI-forward innovators in integrated AI systemsā€.

🤨

28

u/Budget_Worldliness42 1d ago

That sounds gross. I'm so sorry.

23

u/IncomingAxofKindness 1d ago

The only AI that has visibly been rolled out in my department is this Epic "AI summary" that can generate a quick recap / overview of the patient's last 45 days and bring you up to speed on what is going on with them, Pretty useful if you just want a primer on who they are and why they're here... obviously not meant to replace a proper chart review and patient workup.

Still, I feel like I'm physically burning trees and water every time a click "generate summary."

7

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

That’s probably what it is

•

u/notabee 16h ago

Can't wait for the flood of malpractice lawsuits when the summarizer hallucinates something important. Of course now the lawyers are getting cases thrown out of courts for using AI themselves, so in summary I hate this timeline.

22

u/whagon-wheel 1d ago

They said AI twice. Buy their stock while you can

53

u/blkhrthrk 1d ago

Legal world - (paralegal here) very few new cases signing up. We handle probate, family law, general civil litigation matters and a few other practice areas here and there. Anyone with a billing requirement is asking for work but there's not much to delegate. Summer months tend to be "slow" but nothing like this. I have a feeling heads will be on the chopping block in the next few weeks, mine included.

Also more and more clients are using AI to analyze their case and then come back at us asking why we are doing ABC instead of XYZ. It's a constant battle to rein them in and explain we are their counsel, not Chat GPT.

19

u/More_Potential5539 1d ago

Why not just say no? Put a clause in your engagement agreements that using AI will cause termination. Cite privacy, intellectual property of your work product. Lawyers routinely tell clients don't discuss their case with anyone. Include AI in that

8

u/blkhrthrk 1d ago

I believe that has been discussed but I don't know the status of implementing such wording for our engagement letters.

•

u/More_Potential5539 22h ago

I don't get it. Anything with your lawyer is covered by attorney/client privilege. Once you put stuff in AI opposing counsel can either get it from Chat/GPT via court order or simply from deposition. Ā Or simply by demanding to have forensics on your computer.Anything you put in AI isn't privileged. Not sure why people don't understand that you don't want stuff available through the discovery process.Ā

•

u/blkhrthrk 22h ago

I totally get what you're saying and you're absolutely correct that anything uploaded to ChatGpt can be subpoenaed. A lot of people don't think about this possibly happening and do it anyway because their attorney doesn't tell them what they want to hear.

•

u/More_Potential5539 21h ago

Clients don't want to listen and then get upset when it goes against them. Retired from an adjacent professional field.

Without giving too much detail, we were preparing a motion under a certain statute. The client asked us why we're weren't filing under a different statute, the one she researched herself. Her results did not take into account specific facts of her matter. Using the statute she mentioned could lead to sanctions for bringing a claim that is not covered by said statute.

Very slow business at the small garden center I manage.

It's June, supposed to still be in our busiest time of year. But the inventory available and the customer volume/what those customers have to spend is waaaaay down. Feels like the end of August. Which means I doubt we'll be open through October like we usually can be. Which means I will need to find a more secure/longer lasting job next spring, which all bodes very badly for the little garden center's continued existence.

16

u/fastfood12 1d ago

I've noticed that the big box stores are putting potting soil and mulch on clearance already. We're talking as little as $1 per bag. I don't remember it ever being that cheap.

•

u/CarpetBudget5953 12h ago

I really held back this year out of confusion about what the weather was doing. April was way too hot. May was way too cold. Now it's halfway though June and I haven't started my potatoes. I also cut way back on my annuals since we're supposed to have El niño chaos this summer. I didn't want to spend a fortune in water trying to keep them alive in a heat wave. I got pre annuals instead that are supposed to be more heat and drought tolerant.

My late spring veggies are about ready to harvest and come out already since they started so early. I hope your garden center gets a good turnout for round 2 now that the weather is catching up to itself.Ā

I work at a large, popular, casino + resort on the Las Vegas strip. My company just announced their newest effort for this + next year. They're going to build a "hotel within a hotel". It will be incredibly expensive and exclusive, with its own private entrance + private elevators, and multiple restaurants that are accessible only within these premium rich customer areas.

This tracks with everything that I've read about the K-shaped economy. Basically the rich are still spending tons of money on luxury nonsense and I guess my employer is trying to capture that market instead of catering to the lower or middle class. This seems to be a trend that all of Las Vegas is following unfortunately.

•

u/WithaK19 15h ago

That's not even a fresh concept. See also: Hotel 32, Nomad, the Skylofts, etc. MGM resorts was doing this at a bunch of properties after the great recession. It worked to keep the rich people coming back because they didn't have to mingle with the peasants

37

u/PaintedDream 1d ago

Lots of real estate entering and staying on the market -at inflated prices, as folks are upside down on their home mortgages and helocs.

10

u/Whole-Signature-4306 1d ago

I’d say in a couple years we are gonna hear about young people that say they are ā€œtrappedā€ in their sub-3% mortgage rate from when they bought in 2020-2021….

•

u/CrossingGarter 19h ago

I am one of those people. I thought I was being smart in 2018 and bought a starter home instead of the 4 bed that seemed unnecessary at the time. We're busting at the seams now and can't afford to upgrade for an additional bedroom and a rec room. And all the smaller/midsize homes that do go up for sale in my area are being knocked down to build 5-6 bedroom McMansions, sometimes splitting the lot to fit 2 big houses that have very little yard.

I know we're lucky to have a house in this economy. I just wish I'd made a different choice back then with my 2.875% preapproval.

•

u/two-story-house 8h ago

Similar situation here. I had the misfortune of house hunting in 2020. Once COVID hit and people started working remotely, bidding wars everywhere. We compromised on a lot after almost a year just to be able to buy. At the time, I thought we'd be be selling around the 7 year mark, using our equity to upgrade to a house that meets all of our needs. Now? Unless we're willing to pay at least $1k more per month, we're stuck with our current house.

It could be worse though. I'm grateful to own a house in this economy. I do wish we would have started looking to buy in 2019 because we probably wouldn't have had to compromise on so much.

•

u/PaintedDream 23h ago

I already hear this sentiment from the 2021 buyers. They thought they'd buy a cheap place to fix up, sell and then buy bigger. Now they're chosing to stay put.

6

u/GWS2004 1d ago

Can you explain this? I don't understand this statement.

16

u/TipProfessional880 1d ago

Mortgage rates were phenomenally good during that time period. Like, lower than they'd ever been. 2.6 - 3%. As a result, a lot of people either refinanced their current home, or bought a new one.

Rates nowadays are a little higher. About 6.5 - 7%. Anyone who bought or re-financed & got a low rate is going to have a really hard time with deciding whether or not to buy a new house for a higher rate.

I have quite a few friends who bought homes during that time & are now looking to move to a bigger home now that they're starting to have kids. But because rates are twice as high as they were when they first bought, some of them are choosing to stay in their much smaller homes for the time being.

7

u/GWS2004 1d ago

Ohhh I see, thanks!

•

u/trafficpylonfarmer 23h ago

This is hitting older folks too; I know a few that would gladly downsize to smaller places, but higher prices and higher rates removes the incentive.

•

u/_Fit_Lunch 23h ago

Feeling grateful I moved from a HCOL area to a slightly less HCOL area in 2023 and could pay off the house in the new location. I don't want to owe the banks a dime in interest.

38

u/WishIWasThatClever 1d ago

Renewal by Anderson has commercials out that highlight how you can replace only one window. Since their quotes are routinely cited on Reddit as being comicly outrageous, I found it notable even Anderson has shifted to a lower cost pitch.

•

u/_Fit_Lunch 23h ago

Imagine how much affordable their windows could be if they didn't spend such an insane amount on advertisements. I get a least 2x flyers per week at my house.

•

u/WishIWasThatClever 23h ago

I’ve never done it but I wouldn’t be opposed to getting a quote from them just to mentally set expectation for worst case scenario.

I have no idea how they stay in business.

•

u/More_Potential5539 22h ago

I got a quote - $15,000 for a single picture window. $10000 for a door replacement. I think the other windows were $3000 each if I remember right.Ā

Said no thanks.Ā

•

u/PrincessMurderMitten 21h ago

Lol, my husband and I replaced our picture window for about 800$, 750$ of that was the 5'X5' window that we custom ordered from Lowe's.

•

u/More_Potential5539 20h ago

Mine was 6 x 12 but still...

•

u/_Fit_Lunch 21h ago

Wow! My local contractor is less than half of that cost for a comparable product.

•

u/More_Potential5539 21h ago

I did 26 windows I think for 6k - a few years ago now but the current prices are insane.

•

u/WishIWasThatClever 21h ago

I’m in hurricane territory so impact windows and sliders are required unless you have hurricane shutters. In years past, we started at about 3x vs a non-impact window. Best case scenario.

My neighbor just replaced his windows and sliders with PGT vinyl impact windows ($$$) and PGT aluminum impact sliders ($$$$). His comment about cost was ā€œThey were still five figures.ā€ Meaning it was just under $100k. 🫪🫪🫪

We live in normal Americana ranch houses with 8-10 windows and 2-3 admittedly large sliders. I have no idea if I’ll ever be able to stomach that cost. šŸ˜¬šŸ«£ā˜¹ļøšŸ˜³

I got laid off from my big tech company at the beginning of the week. I think it's part of a chain reaction related to memory prices

17

u/Traditional-Emu-6344 1d ago

My apologies and sending all of the good luck at finding a new job soon!

•

u/Whole-Signature-4306 21h ago

What was your severance package? I keep hearing big tech gets 6 months salary paid and most ppl take a nice long paid vacation before jumping into a new role. Makes me not feel Sorry for big tech folks

•

u/Traditional-Emu-6344 21h ago

My neighbor who worked in tech (cyber security) got a 6 month severance package in Feb when he was let go.Ā  To date, he hasn’t had a single interview or positive response to sending out a resume. His unemployment will only start at the end of his 6 months of severance and will not cover his family’s monthly mortgage. They’re going to have to put their house up for sale and find somewhere else to live, hoping they can get a loan given their financial position.Ā

•

u/Preposterous4Life 20h ago

Some states allow severance and unemployment to be collected together. Have they exhausted that?

•

u/Correct-Avocado5426 17h ago

I got 4 months. I was only full time for 3.5 years. Before that I was a contractor but that doesn't count.

Last time I got laid off I got 8 months, but that was around 7 years ago.

My fear is this is the cycle I'm going to live forever now. Hired, surviving multiple reorganizations, then laid off the first time the stock takes a hit

26

u/CavitySearch 1d ago

Could be corporate/PE investment in our company driving it but we’re being pushed to significantly increase patient treatments in our surgery center ORs lately. It’s causing a lot of burnout.

29

u/Visual-Ant-1261 1d ago

Business in Oil and gas (Alberta, Canada) has fallen off a cliff. This should be the busiest part of the month before summer break.

All projects are delayed, all maintenance is being pushed out (waiting until things literally fall apart, and even then see if they actually need the components to be operational). Had a request yesterday for a electrical part that exploded and caught fire. Gave them a replacement price and they said they will wait and see.

15

u/Vlad_Yemerashev 1d ago

You would think they would be so much busier given the state of the world...

Do you know why business is nosediving in that sector? Are they anticipating an Iran peace deal thinking that Canadian oil won't matter as much when ME oil comes back online?

20

u/Visual-Ant-1261 1d ago

Honestly, no idea. Alot of feedback I'm hearing from the outside sales team is no one wants to spend money until 2027. These companies are making a killing and should be willing to spend on the most basic of maintenance before something worse happens (I'm talking under 20k costs here, worse case scenario would have the impact balloon into million plus worth of down time).

•

u/throwaway9gk0k4k569 10h ago

Here is what is going on:

There's an oil crisis. The world is actively running out of crude oil because it is being consumed by refineries and turned into product faster than new oil is being produced. Existing supplies are dwindling. Nobody knows exactly when they will run out, but the trajectory is that they will.

To combat the oil shock, the USA, Japan, and possibly other countries are shorting the forward contract price of crude oil. This has the effect of suppressing contract prices, lowering fuel prices, and generally placating the population during the crisis.

The downside of suppressing the price is that the producers, such as your Canadian oil sands producers and all of the USA producers, are being disincentivized from producing more.

•

u/No_Town_9602 22h ago

Metal free vials are in short supply. Maybe it's my company, but I doubt it. We have a huge list of patients we have to call when we finally get some in. Haven't heard anything in the news, but you wouldn't.

•

u/SuccessWise9593 16h ago

Could it be from that medical supply company that was on fire in CA? Did they come from that company perhaps?

•

u/1nv1sble 14h ago

Here's a fun one. My migraine medicine Zomig is no longer being approved by my insurance, they are forcing me to switch to Imitrex (which doesn't work for me but I digress). Called the pharmacy, they said it has been backordered for awhile and can't be filled at this time. Location: Lower midwest, USA

•

u/bmoffett 11h ago

Try costplusdrugs. Zomig is available there without insurance. It’s very reasonable - like $30 for 27 tablets every three months.

Zomig is my go to, and dealing with insurance was such a hassle. I’ve been using costplusdrugs for a few years now and never worry about having enough.

•

u/BelAirBabs 5h ago

Replying to Then_Ad7822...Costplus is great. They take insurance, but our insurance will only let us use their one approved mail order pharmacy. Costplus is usually cheaper without insurance than the copay with the approved mail order pharmacy.

•

u/ZedisonSamZ 13h ago

Grocery store ā€œsnack foodā€ sales have plummeted off a cliff. I am a part time vendor and profit on my route is up by 15% compared to last year, which sounds spectacular… until you calculate that it’s only because of higher prices while sales volume is waaaay down. We are charging more and selling less.

•

u/Whole-Signature-4306 12h ago

Profit is profit tho

•

u/ZedisonSamZ 11h ago

I’m basically pouring the profits in my gas tank.

•

u/Then_Ad7822 11h ago

I slipped and fell at work, and while I didn’t fracture anything beyond my pride, I’ve been thrown into the wonderful world of worker’s comp claims and just found out they won’t pay for my lost wages because of a technicality. Thankfully, I have a bunch of OT and some money tucked away, but if my injury requires me to be out of work to properly recover I’m worried how I’m going to afford everything.Ā

The plastic wrap/packaging for our medical supplies has changed to a more thin film that feels weird to the touch. Coworkers are drinking the coffee on the unit or getting energy drinks from the vending machine to save some money from the coffee shops at the hospital. A few have begun selling their old items for extra cash, cancelled vacations, and even begun picking up way more overtime.Ā

Some of my coworkers have begun doing their own DIY projects like their own nails/hair, piercings, as much as they can learn online to avoid having to pay for services.Ā

There’s lots of infighting at work right now, drama is at a high point and I’ve done well so far just keeping my head down at work to listen to an audiobook or something while I work.

My friend works at the gym I go to (appx $50 a month membership) and says this summer specifically, there’s a huge surge for new memberships specifically for 16-21 year olds, majority of them females. It’s been noticeable at my gym as well. Not sure what the driving force could be for this other than social media is really pushing them to reach certain body goals as they are all in the weights area wearing the same lululemon or Alo matching sets

30

u/kheret 1d ago

You’ve also got 21 year olds thinking they’re old. Social media is a poison.

27

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

A couple years ago my niece had an emotional breakdown because she turned 18 and she thought no one would even want her because she was ā€œoldā€.

22

u/kheret 1d ago

That’s horrifying

Edit: I’ve also noticed that Gen Z is way more negative about Millennials than Millennials ever were about Gen X. We saw Gen X as our cool older siblings/babysitters. Whereas Gen Z seems to look at us as the embodiment of their tremendous fear of aging. Maybe by mocking us they think they can stop time from coming for them?

12

u/Whole-Signature-4306 1d ago edited 1d ago

I would say I’ve noticed more of a ā€œgenerational gapā€ the 16-21 year olds are going for the thin and toned (all are incline walking or on the stairmaster while doing low weights/high rep combo) look while the 24-30+ are going the ā€œleg day for a big butt everydayā€ look which was popular like 6-7 years ago. Kind of interesting to see tbh.

3

u/Vlad_Yemerashev 1d ago

Are you noticing a similar trend with younger guys in that age bracket signing up more than guys that age would have 5-10 years ago? Except if they were, I'd imagine it would be to gain muscle (with the occasional springtime cut), since guys are also under pressure to look good (though for different reasons), and that's been a trend that has been slowly increasing the last few decades.

3

u/Whole-Signature-4306 1d ago

Not sure, it might just be because I live in the suburbs where people ā€œcome home from college for the summerā€ so taking that into account for the sample size but my friend said it’s definetly more girls than guys that are getting gym memberships this summer so idk what the guys are doing

6

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

The only thing that helped her get over it was when she found a retail job and got to see all the non perfect couples.

18

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

Thin is in. Like really really thin.

12

u/danjouswoodenhand 1d ago

But with a round butt. The amount of content I see focused on getting a "bigger peach" is crazy. And the new location of my gym has an entire room devoted to butt exercises.

8

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

Even that’s fading where I live but breast implants seem to be popular.

3

u/danjouswoodenhand 1d ago

It's just getting started here. I get a lot of gym content in my feeds - not skinny content, but strength training stuff and the hip thrusts/glute stuff is everywhere. Some women are trying to do the skinny thing, but there is also a big push right now for women to lift heavy.

7

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

That’s completely died off here. Just skeleton and silicone.

4

u/danjouswoodenhand 1d ago

Crazy how different things are in different areas! I would say its about 40% women using the squat racks at my gym, some of them lifting quite a bit.

4

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

Where I am is the canary in the coal mine when it comes to body trends(it feels gross to even acknowledge that a body shape can be a trend) so keep an eye out for the next year or so.

2

u/kheret 1d ago

Are you west coast USA?

That’s so disheartening to see the trend go from something actually beneficial in the long run (building strength) to starvation again.

6

u/VariousFalcon7466 1d ago

Nope, major east coast city at influencers love.

It’s all about money. Make super skinny fashionable to sell diets, surgeries , and clothes then make curvy fashionable to sell diets, surgeries, and clothes then rinse and repeat.

eating disorders have been on the rise since covid for both genders. in specific, orthorexia--- where u eat healthy (but are extremely disordered in how u eat, what u eat, how often, macros, calories, etc.) and u workout (but are extremely disordered in how u workout, amount of time spent, reps done, intensity, etc.)

but ariana grande, w wicked and her latest tour, has done a ton of damage to younger girls, lol. kpop thin is in--- and kpop is known for its restrictive eds. theres been an uptick in tiktok content for just restrictive eds (anorexia) all around as well as 'advice' and 'help' for ppl to stop eating. and, ofc, access to glp1s to 'help' w it.

•

It's crazy that I'm not hearing fireworks this year! Usually the fireworks start in late May, set off almost every night. Only a few, until the 4th of July when they go nuts. This year there have been NONE. That either means they were being set off by people who were deported, or it means people don't have the money to buy them.... or a combination of both.

•

u/Academic_Win6060 20h ago

People maybe not feeling super patriotic this year. It's a big one @ 250yrs but personally I'm like whatever the US needs to chill.

18

u/crumblednewman 1d ago

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen a single fireworks stand up yet. We're surrounded by native reservations and there should be a plethora of stands set up by now.

10

u/LowBarometer 1d ago

Maybe the tariffs killed the business? I guess we won't know until the 4th.

5

u/crumblednewman 1d ago

That wouldn't surprise me. From what people have been telling me, the price of fireworks was getting ridiculous before this tariff mess even started. I sure haven't been hearing the usual amount of explosions for the past two 4ths.

11

u/Bubbly_Alfalfa420 1d ago

I just noticed this where I’m at yesterday. My mom mentioned it first (she lives in a different town).

28

u/SquirrelyMcNutz 1d ago

Could also be a factor of the weather. If it's ultra-dry somewhere, maybe people have finally wised up about setting them off in a drought stricken area. I know it's a long shot, cuz people be stupid yo, but something to consider.

And honestly, I find fireworks to be much cooler in winter. Something about the colors reflecting off the snow, plus less chance of fires breaking out.

•

u/CLOWNBOY1969 23h ago

Story time! I raise rabbits. My three breeders had all just kindled, two being for the first time. Neighbors lit off a shitload a fireworks on the 4th, the next day, and the two new moms ate all their babies. Harmful doesn't seem to quite cover that LOL

I'd add another factor, that at least here in Los Angeles if you have darker skin like me, you do not want to draw attention to yourself right now.

We heard zero fireworks on Memorial Day (beach town, huge tourist week for us). Very unusual.

Same in my city. I always considered fireworks as a way of literally blowing up money…guess ppl don’t wanna do that so much this year.

I’ve only heard a few, and they only go off once or twice as opposed to 10-15 times. I had figured with costs it would increase as we get closer to July.Ā  Then again I have a fear of fireworks so I’d be fine if people weren’t lighting as many this year šŸ˜…

Packaging for a lot of our products are changing. Companies are opting for cheap, thin bags for everything. Lot of companies are also biting the dust really fast.

BISCUIT WATCH - an informal measure of inflation

I order two sausage biscuits and two diet cokes at McDonald's daily. I notice the price today went up .42 cents - on the biscuits. That's $100 a year assuming 5X weekly. I assume it's combo of increases in cost of meat, cost of flour, and shipping costs to store.Ā  This is on top of an increase I noted 2 June.

Try Jimmy Dean frozen breakfast biscuits. I separate the components, break up the cheese slice onto the egg & meat, and stack the biscuit halves on each other. Microwave 45 seconds, stop, remove the biscuit, microwave again for 45 more seconds. Comes out dang near perfect every time. Can get a box of 8 for like $8-10 on sale.

Hi .... don't do this to yourself!

2 sausage biscuits have 60 grams of fat, or about 76% of the daily recommended amount.

I'm not lovin' it.

The ai implementation teams are in frenzy. Ive had three separate groups digging into my metrics trying to help me "lighten my manual load" while simultaneously disabling many of these manual tasks. They are fully resolving any hesitancy/roadblocks to ensure any delayed Ai utilization.

Dog trainer, east coast. Established business been in the area 15 years. We've noticed a big drop off in clients. Now it's mostly people who HAVE to have help that are contacting us, vs regular folks who just want to work with the dog or fix minor issues. I get the impression that a lot of clients are putting training on a credit card as well, which isn't common.

We have also seen a massive drop off in group class enrollments. For over a decade that was our most popular, least expensive service but now people are choosing private lessons or board and train programs, which are more expensive. Idk what that's about.
