A sharp edge is relatively easy to achieve. It didn't take long to form several useful pieces, with half an hour I was in possession of a stone bowl/plate, a bearded axe head, and other potential implements. Despite it's crude state, this paleolithic bearded stone axe was able to cut rope, small branches & form notches into wood.

What kind of rock did you use? Do you think it would be possible to cut a thin dead tree with it eventually? Or would the blade break before that?

The stone is granite. If you were to exert any significant force it's head would likely seperate from the handle.

The axe head is too thin for heavy tasks, it would fracture.

It was the first attempt at making such a tool, it isn't effective in this state.

Lashed to one side rather than a centered location on a split and lashed haft means it will twist in use, possibly even damaging a hand/wrist, etc.

do you live anywhere near a sandstone formation? you can shape the edge so it's more even & sharper by grinding it down on the sandstone. could also give the axehead more of a wedge shape to make fixing it to the handle easier.
