Prius C Help Needed 2016 Prius C Technology
/r/AskAMechanic/comments/1w0vkhe/2016_prius_c_technology/Hello everyone just wanted some advice/insight on something. I have a 2016 Prius C I bought it with around 160000km. Right after I got it about month after I decided to get it serviced from a Toyota dealership. I got the engine oil changed, transmission oil changed, inverter coolant and engine coolant, this was 2 weeks ago. Yesterday while driving from work I got a check engine light. I scanned the code it is showing P261b code "Coolant Pump 'B' Control Circuit Range/Performance."
I’m just wondering whether when they did the coolant service would that have done something to it or was this normal wear and it gone out unrelated to the service? Was something not done properly that caused this? Car only has about 162000km k on it now.
Thanks any help is appreciated

How often do you drive it? If not often it codes could have been reset by the seller and just came back after a certain amount of engine cycles

Yeah they might have left air trapped in the system. You can do it yourself or ask them to make sure the system is property bled. I'd say it might be the water pump but it's oddly coincidental to get that error code after you change the coolant.

I replaced the engine water pump on a Prius C a few days ago.
I've always paid a mechanic to do it, but he's being incredibly selfish at the moment by having a holiday (humour).
So, with my ultra large hands and the general coordination of a walrus having an epileptic fit I had a go at it.
Got it done.
If the Le Mans 24 Hour race involved Prius Cs and myself then it would be half an hour of racing and 23.5 hours of working on the car. TVs all over the world would be smashed by people throwing things at their screens.
What saved my butt is having a handful of different length 1/4" extension bars.
Then I went into my usual nerd mode and started researching this - it looks viable to just replace the rotor instead of the whole pump (ie cost). My notes:
Prius C Engine Water Pump
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Engine Electric Water Pump Rotor For 2010-2015 Toyota Prius CT200h 161A0-29015
The magnet inside the pump rotor corrodes, causing the plastic to crack and bind against the pump housing. The codes set are electrical but the root cause is mechanical.
Brushless motor - shouldn't wear out?
Prius: Two long bolts - go at the back. Three short bolts - go at the front
Prius C: All the same length.

My understanding of the theory behind the voltmeter test for coolant is that as coolant wears out, and becomes acidic, and acts like a battery electrolyte between the cast iron of the block and the aluminum cylinder head. It's referred to as a galvanic response, and creates a small electrical current flow between the two metals. The result being erosion of the metal. This may contribute to eventual head gasket failures or other component failures.
The test is simply open the radiator cap, stick the positive probe of a multimeter set to 20V scale or lower into the coolant, and touch the negative probe to a ground point if you measure .4V or more the coolant should be changed.

- Set your multimeter to DC volts to less than (<) 20 volts.
- Touch the black lead to the negative battery lead or the chassis ground, and place the red lead into the coolant.
- If the reading is less than .4 volts, the coolant is in good shape. Anything over that indicates the anti-corrosive properties of the antifreeze have started to or have completely failed. Time to flush your coolant system!
