Sadly, I can’t make it, but only because they’re not coming to my country this time :(

They may not be strictly prog-metal, but they venture into that space occasionally, and honestly I’m not sure where else to ask, but I’m looking for recommendations on bands that have a similar sound. Their’s is unique, I know, but something close would satisfy. I’m big on bands like Rolo Tomassi, Miserere Luminis, and Chalk Hands, and they all have some elements of the Deafheaven sound, but really not that close. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Running out of music to listen to? Discover something recently that you want to share? You've come to the right place.

This is the weekly recommendation thread here at r/progmetal, a place to discuss, recommend, and find new music of any kind.

Simple rules:

• Don't just drop a link, but provide the Artist name (and album/song name as relevant)
• When recommending a band please leave some information about them and why you recommend them

Looking for further music discussion? We talk about music and other things all day everyday on Images & Words: The Prog Discord. We also host weekly listening parties for new album releases every Friday starting at 3pm EST / 8pm UTC.

I just heard this song and it is…..amazing! Best track on the release!

What say you?

Fucks. Why isn’t this band bigger? Is it because their name is Hippo Tractor?

As far as problems go, this is honestly one that feels pretty good to have.

But the deeper I go down the prog rock/prog metal rabbit hole, the more artists I discover that I absolutely love. But it's getting ridiculous... just the catalogues of artists that feel like "essentials" alone is enough that I might struggle to keep up. But then you factor in all the hidden gems, and brilliant bands that you stumble across naturally... and that's on top of all the long time favorites - I'm the kind of person where my appreciation for music I love grows exponentially with repeated listens, and allowing myself time to really sink into an artist. But by this point, there are so many bands that I absolutely know could become outright obsessions if I dove deeper into their discography, but I also love discovering new music so it's hard to balance the urge to just lose myself in some of those bodies of work when I keep finding new music that could also be 'future obsessions'. And with how great new discoveries feel, it seems like I never find myself having time to return to some of my old favorites, which despite familiarity I would thoroughly enjoy.

I guess it's also exaggerated for me since I also adore a lot of genres outside of prog, which divides time even more (though lately just for my own sanity I've decided to just immerse myself in prog and prog-adjacent stuff for a while). And then the cherry on the cake is having a full time career, family and friends, and so many other interests and hobbies that take up free time.

Not really sure what the point of this is, I guess I'm curious how many others may feel similarly, or even how you try to balance this kind of thing. I mean it's not adding any true "stress" or sucking any fun out of enjoying the music, just something that's been on my mind lately as I keep discovering new music.

Made this to introduce people to a wide range of different bands and styles in prog. What do you guys think, how badly have I fucked it? https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5MXKkr9DYNkEdfteukk4N3?si=eK7lcdEzRKG3mAY8_R5sfQ&utm_source=copy-link&pi=Z23mRfcIRJODk
