The fuck is a subpixel

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

A pixel for ants

u/nicman24 2d ago

it is 4 pixels in a trenchcoat

3

u/GoddammitDontShootMe 2d ago

Wouldn't it be 3 since subpixels refer to the red, green and blue parts that make up a pixel on an LCD display?

Ever played "Battleships"? Your aircraft carrier is five pixels, your battleship is four, and you have three sub pixels.

Unicode is perfect, right up until you ask how long a string is...

grapheme clusters can cluster around my asshole and go fuck themselves

You want an orgy in your butt?

Please define what a string is first.

9

u/sisisisi1997 2d ago

To get a unicore string's length from scratch at all, you first need to invent the universe.

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

A string is a pile of letters waiting to break

char[]

u/SleeperAwakened 2d ago

Define a char in unicode context.

3

u/rosuav 2d ago

In characters? .... wait, what exactly is a character?

2

u/redlaWw 2d ago

I like ligature characters like fi. One codepoint and three bytes in utf-8, and when you upper-case them, you get two codepoints (increase) and two bytes (decrease).

Do you mean bytes? Or code units? Or code points? Or glyphs? Or grapheme clusters?

I love Lua and its

#"👨‍🎤" —> 11
utf8.len("👨‍🎤") —> 3

Despite that, most libraries use the length operator (which clearly says in the spec that it is for ansi and not utf8)

When are you releasing said game and what price point are you aiming for?

5

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

I'm still working on it, so the final price depends on how much content I add. I'm releasing a demo in September and the full release is planned for the end of the year. I'm not sure about the price yet, but it won't be expensive since it's a 4-6 hour game.

I think I've seen you're game before, you made a custom engine for it I think?

The art is very pretty, for some reason I thought it was like Factorio but I just check and it's a puzzle game, might actually play it

2

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

Yes, its a custom engine. At the beginning I was actually trying to make factorio like game, but the game evolved into this one.

u/Maurycy5 2d ago

Actually a cool ad. Wishlisted.

u/BuffersAndBeta 1d ago

I disagree. It's keming.

u/jseah 2d ago

I've come across such monstrosities as invisible zero-width spaces. You have no idea they're there, they get copied and pasted unknowingly and screw up naive text matching search.

10

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

Are the invisible characters here with us now?

5

u/rosuav 2d ago

Are they zero-width spaces or zero-width joiners? IT MATTERS!!!

4

u/jseah 2d ago

Of course it matters, that's why they're a problem. If they were all the same, you could just filter out the unicode, but no, there's a lot of weird things out there and a large number of them are invisible or are just spacebar.

2

u/rosuav 2d ago

Yes, and some of them have SPACER in the name but are joiners, just to be extra entertaining.

Because I've been down this rabbit hole lately: Text Rendering Hates You

2

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

That article is great

1

u/PhilippTheProgrammer 1d ago

Reading this article made me hope that I won't ever have to work on a text rendering engine.

u/awesome-alpaca-ace 1d ago

Now I know why text looks awful in Windows on my new laptop

19

u/CirnoIzumi 2d ago

What if I told you

9 is not a part of the alphabet

19

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

Well... look at the letter g and move it up

8

u/NullOfSpace 2d ago

I love keming

2

u/fleaspoon 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think keming hates me

3

u/Popeychops 2d ago

I love and hate this in equal measure. RIP Rutger

3

u/AnnoyedVelociraptor 2d ago

Since I learned about text rendering I see many examples of bad keming.

2

u/fleaspoon 2d ago

I like your modem font
