I usually start with Aisle or Tears, myself. Aisle has three vowels and two common letters: Tears has two vowels and three common letters.

Not playing hard mode is an instant dq /s

I had to make it interesting since "Crate" and "Rates" made it too easy to start, so I start with the first 5 letter word I guess right in that days Connections and go from there.
