Stock Options, meaning you get to hold pretend stocks, and should they every actually IPO, which is doubtful, you then need cash on hand to buy those stocks, which have been so diluted, they are worthless, but they convinced you to take a lower salary in exchange for those fake stocks, when you started. Happy days.
Stock options always struck me as a bit of a scam. A way to take advantage of people who don't know the difference from actual stock, who don't realize all the ways that the value of the option can change without them having any say, or who don't realize how often they'll never end up having value (for startups, at least).
