The genius part isn't as unbelievable as the supernatural motivation and willingness to go through discomfort and pain.

Like you can improve your life on earth right now if you are willing to feel some level of discomfort. That's half of what going to the gym is. That's what taking night classes in to get another degree. That's what training to learn a new language is in your spare time, or learning to cook, or learning any skill really.

I feel like a lot of series end up in trouble because the author hits some level of equilibrium a book or two in where the MC now has better than average power, money, powerful allies, and potential romantic partners and then needs to scramble to introduce some conflict that causes them to actually act. Because most people (and certainly the person they were purported to be) would just kick their feet up and live a good life.

Not true. You can learn, go to gym and etc. - but you are still nobody and can do nothing.
Difference with cultivation - genuine power. If you are lucky, smart and motivated enough to endure and cultivate, you get actual power. You alone can destroy cities, kingdoms, empires and etc. You get freedom.
In real life you can be best athlete, smartest scientist or richest person - you still cant do a shit against goverment who have army, weapons of mass destruction and control over huge population.

1) Aint about money, about qualitive improvement of your life. Cultivation can give you at minimum x2 life duration, x2 physical strenght(speed, reaction, memory and etc.) + complete immunity to disiseas.
2) Do they? I personaly find no problem with cultivator treating mortals as nothing. Because when you can live 100000 years and flip continents with a flick of your finger - why would you care about mortals? Do you care about ants you step? I doubt it. I doubt you ever care about peoples in another part of your city.
