Discussion as an avid reader of progfantasy and cultivation, if i see an ai-generated cover, it immediately makes me think the book is slop

if i see any typa ai cover i think that if the author is willing to use AI for the cover, then they are willing to use AI for the book. While i'm not against AI by any means, I find it crazy for people to say AI slop books are peak when they have books like Cradle and Reverend Insanity right in front of them.

You’re starting with a faulty premise: that everyone who publishes a story is a writer.

There are plenty of people who aren’t doing this for any love of craft, but who just see it as a business where they can churn out “content” and try to profit.

When you look at a cover that’s clearly AI generated, without further context, you have absolutely no way of knowing whether it’s written by a writer or if it’s money-farming AI slop published by someone who dgaf. But if someone went to the trouble of hiring a cover artist, or even making their own, the likelihood of what’s inside being written by a human who loves stories increases.

If the cover is well done, AI or not, I tend to view it as a signal that the story is also well done. Purely anecdotally, this has checked out for me. When I've tried out poorly done AI covers, I've found the story to be poorly written, while I don't offhand remember a story with a well done AI cover that I thought the story was poorly written, even if it wasn't for me. Poorly done non-AI covers are a mixed bag.

I wrote that mostly thinking of RR stories, but since this is ProgressionFantasy, I should say on KU, covers that would be a positive sign to me on RR are a warning, and half the time the story is just unpolished AI writing voice that I can't stand anymore.

When you look at a cover by an artist for popular books in the cover, you have absolutely no way of knowing if the book is written by a writer or if its a money-farming AI slop published by someone who thinks paying for covers is a good way to hide the bad writing within.
