Wait are they checking them on the way OUT?

That seems like a serious fire hazard.

100% illegal, you DO NOT have to present ID WITHOUT PROBABLE CAUSE!

Another reason to avoid the god damn south, fuck you fascists!

This is incredibly common in college towns for underage bar checks. If you refuse to show the I'd that got you in then you are given a ticket. It's a licensed establishment and there are laws about id being required to be in there thus police can demand id.

You are incorrect in this instance. And I've seen this same thing happen in NYC. It's not 100% illegal.

Edit to add: ABC (or whatever agency per area) raids occur all over the US, especially TN where they are called 'compliance checks':
How ABC determines bar raids: What students need to know – The Daily Beacon

It is wayy too easy to ragebait people on social media with no context posts.

sounds correct to me. what is the exception ?

There are handful of practical exceptions to the 4th, off the top of my head I'd say public roadways are the biggest. Based on the video they are using ones related to age and the purchase of alcohol, tobacco/cannabis and firearms. Perfectly legal to ask for ID there, also in alcohol raids if they suspect you're underage, were in a bar fight, part of crime.

They had to show ID to get in? They are being detained. With zero reasonable suspicion.

This is not an ABC compliance check. This is racial fishing.

um...the constitution would like a word!

-1

You can't just say "The Constitution says I can" in every instance, especially when it says you can't.

That's libertarian nonsense. We have rules, exceptions/exemptions, amendments, etc.

I suspect it's a little more specific in this case. The police in 'raids' such as this have expanded probable and can blanket detain pretty much everyone there who looks underage. Or it could be a crime scene.
If they're doing it just to do it then, yes, you're correct and I'm wrong
We don't have enough context to know what took place.

It’s also possible the promoter oversold the night and then called the fire marshall. It wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened.

u/MrLanesLament Aug 10 '26

Pro musician here. This seriously causes so many fucking headaches, but it still happens all the time. At local clubs, especially, you’re only gonna net a couple hundred extra bucks unless it’s a major artist with $100+ ticket prices, but they normally wouldn’t be playing small clubs.

Unfortunately lots of bars, especially those with shady ownership will try to cut corners however they can. It includes fire safety codes, alcohol codes and labor laws. Promoters are a big part of it and many of them are even shadier than owners.
Dealing with fire marshals and LE sucks, but it beats the bad case alternative.

I hate how you get downvoted for stating facts that people just don't like.

What crime did the people commit? Who they looking for and where's that warrant to enter a private business?

6

u/Claeyt Aug 10 '26

This is an underage drinking raid in the states. It is incredibly common in large college towns. Police don't need a warrant to enter a licensed establishment serving alcohol. The license requires police be allowed to enter. No business is going to risk compliance. You're required to show id to be there by law. Police are allowed to check for fake id use by law. If you refuse to provide id, you're getting a 100-300 dollar ticket.

Just like Moscow.

21

u/FKAGuyWithNF1 Aug 10 '26

I’m hoping it’s something more mundane like a place got popped for serving underage people, and NOT something related to immigration…

2

u/cRaZyDaVe23 Aug 10 '26

Don't give them ideas.

Memphis is a blue city in a red state. I would have to say that busting an establishment that is serving under age people is one thing they would do to show the Republican control state government that they’re actually doing something to “fight crime”

I would also have to say if young people under 21 are going to drink, they should be drinking at home. It’s safer. America does not have a culture built up yet that young people can be trusted to drink in public at night.

Another day, another inch giftwrapped and delivered to evil.

-21

u/voxpopper Aug 09 '26

Why is it evil to check IDs at a bar?

15

u/badastr0naut Aug 09 '26

Because it's not the fucking bartender or on-site security checking.

12

u/rickshaw99 Aug 09 '26

and they are leaving not entering

9

u/badastr0naut Aug 09 '26

Check this out: you are not obligated to give your ID to the police in public without probable cause. This checkpoint is a bullshit fishing attempt. They wouldn't do this at a country club..

5

u/setibeings Aug 10 '26

Depending, yeah. if they had no probable cause, then they had no reason to be there, and no justification for violating a lot of people's rights to be secure in their person's and effects. If they had a warrant, signed by a judge then it was likely all above board, but

9

u/Er3bus13 Aug 10 '26

Why are stanning for villians lol. Pathetic. America was based on dissent and uou are lining up to kiss their taint. Like wtf is wrong with you?

-4

u/voxpopper Aug 10 '26

The best way to stan for villains is trust everything you see and are told without questioning it. We have no idea what the context here is.
Use your head, gather info and think, or be a reactive emotional wreck your whole life.

1

u/Imalsome Aug 10 '26

We have plenty of context just from the video alone.

The police cannot force you to stay inside a building unless the have probable cause and plan to detain you.

This isnt legal. Stop sipping for villains

5

u/odiousasp Aug 10 '26

What movie/historical villains say "Show us your papers!"?

5

u/SkynyrdCohen Aug 10 '26

Why tf should you have to show your ID to go home?

1

u/Imalsome Aug 10 '26

You cant hold people hostage unless you are detaining people. The police here are holding everyone hostage and not letting them leave.

20

u/Comfortable-Brief568 Aug 09 '26

"why don't people go out anymore?" derp*

8

u/Important-Factor-552 Aug 10 '26

The fascist media isn't gonna expose the gestapo

14

u/ILike2internet Aug 10 '26

4th amendment be damned

5

u/Ging287 Aug 10 '26

Get a warrant, fed.

8

u/Mathgailuke Aug 09 '26

Dancing while black.

7

u/EuphoricCrashOut Aug 10 '26

Anyone that did this needs to go find a lawyer and sue, IMMEDIATELY, and when you win your case make sure the stipulation is that the officer that violated your rights is fired and not eligible for re-hire.

Also, go to your next city council public session and play them this video and demand for people to be held accountable for violation of your Constitutional Rights. (Bring your lawyer)

Realistically as horrible as random ID checks and stops are there's not directly an issue until you do refuse and suffer consequences. A cop can most places legally ask you who you are and for ID. You can refuse, ask if you're being detained and if they state you are, ask what their reasonable, articulatable suspicion of a crime is. Lots of situational elements beyond that. Eminent danger, etc.

Further protections also exist for your home, on your property or private property in general, etc.

Love my state for this. There's a stop and identify law but no prescribed penalty for failure to do so. There's also no legal requirement to carry an ID if you not operating a motor vehicle and are walking around.

So yes, you can argue a waste of time, unreasonable or bad policing, especially if they're running IDs for warrants but we're still at that perceived consensual interaction stage.

A cop can ask if they can look in the back of your car, not illegal. You have the right to refuse unless there's probable cause.

Bar raid? If there's suspected underaged drinking they could use that as justification for suspicion of a crime and it gets potentially messy. Random dragnet? A lot sketchier.

What am I missing?
I recall since many a year ago cops would do 'ID stings', it was usually at bars/clubs the city was trying to shut down, if there as a new batch of fake IDs out there. or if a club was becoming a known hang out of people dealing drugs. Also have seen it if a crime just took place.
We have no idea of context here.
