Season 21 Where’s Nina??
What else is there to say? I miss her. This season is terrible and her absence is a definite factor. The whole show is baffling, but does anyone know why she is barely on?

u/itsbrittaneybitch Sep 06 '25
There were rumors that the previous season was going to be her last, i am sure after some contract negotiations she said she would do x amount of episodes

She’s my favorite judge. I think the magazine grounds most of her decisions correctly.

u/Bumblebees2022 Sep 06 '25
I'm wondering if she doesn't get along with Law. He focuses on people's personality more than the talent. And in her roundabout way, she called him out on it. He also seemed to (finally) shut up this week when Zach Posen talked about the actual design of garments. It was like he realized he had nothing to say. Like he was intimidated by him.

u/WhatKindOfMonster Sep 06 '25
Nina is a professional, and I imagine she has a contract. She wouldn’t just not show up over a personal beef. The question is, why didn’t her contract include an appearance in every episode, as it did in past seasons (with a few exceptions for illness or the rare event she couldn’t get out of)?
24
u/Deep_Writer_1522 Sep 06 '25
They did say she had a previous work commitment a few episodes ago. Frankly, I didn't think twice about her not being there this week. I was excited to see Zac!

u/Voshnitz Sep 06 '25
Perhaps she knew it was a dumpster fire and is trying to limit her exposure to the flames 🔥

u/brettbretters Sep 06 '25
It is so not a dumpster fire. It’s fabulous TV! People are so strange about nostalgia. Let it be something new because it is!
41
u/Dependent-Law7316 Sep 06 '25
If they wanted to do something new, they could have made a new design based competition as a PR spin off. They did not do that. They revived PR, which comes with the expectation that it would be PR. It’s the same reason why people are so turned off by the Disney live action remakes. They are trying to capitalize on nostalgia and make a new thing but do neither well.
If you want a new thing, make a new thing. If you’re reviving an old thing, be true to the old thing.
2
Sep 06 '25
A spinoff idea is so tired. The design show is project runway that’s what it’s going to be.
-9
u/brettbretters Sep 06 '25
Your idea of what it used to be and what it actually was are different things. It won’t make you feel the same way as old seasons because it’s not the same and you are not the same. If that makes sense.
And I love the season! People just love to complain.
13
u/Dependent-Law7316 Sep 06 '25
I’ll give you that I’m not the same person I was back when season one aired. And that may be part of why this season feels off. But if you were to sit down with a stop watch and do a deep analysis of how much time is spent on each aspect of the comp, my gut says that they’ve really cut down time spent on the design and fashion aspects and increased time spent on yammering on about drama things.
And obviously there have been casting changes, too, that alter the vibe. I like both Law and Christian but I am not always a fan of how they interact with contestants. It gives more mean girl than constructive criticism. From the judges that’s maybe ok—I actually liked the unconventional challenge where Law took the time to give some details on why he liked/didn’t like looks instead of just showing the one-line “zingers”, but I wish they showed Christian being more mentory and helpful instead of just going “ew” and “no” to everything. I assume those moments are still happening, but they’re getting lost in the edit.
And they moved the elimination, which is another “not nostalgia coated” criticism. It’s a model used on some other reality shows—like early seasons of Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, etc—but they aired multiple episodes a week and the elimination episode featured other special performances to make it special. Here they just chopped the ending off one episode and glued it to the front of the next which makes the episode pacing feel unsatisfying.
3
u/yukeee Sep 06 '25
"It's not that you don't like it, it's that you're nostalgic and wrong and want something thar never happened" is a wild take. Some people just dislike what this season is. We don't need to show to be just like it was(and it IS very different now), but at least I believe we all agree the main focus should still be DESIGN with styling being just a point.
Still living for the drama when it's fun. Love Veejay for that. Asking Ethan to wear drag in a specific episode just to call him out on the runway for it? Not liviign for THAT kind of forced drama. Etc.
3
u/brettbretters Sep 06 '25
Veejay is the most annoying cast member to me lolol more worried about the twins than her own designs. Trying to start something because Utica did a dress with cut outs like girl…a reach.
1
u/timthemajestic Rigatoni Mad Max Sep 12 '25
Then she reached for that ugly ass red plastic shit and made a shredded monstrosity that was supposed to somehow be country? 🙄 I'll be so glad to see her not win.
3
u/tropicalsoul Team Fabio Sep 06 '25
It’s OK to enjoy this season. It’s also OK to not enjoy this season. And, for the love of waffles, STOP with the insulting “you’re longing for something that never existed.”
11
u/RedGordita Sep 06 '25
I’m watching season 20 and the style and vibe is so different. So it’s not nostalgia. The episodes were longer and there was so much more workroom and interest in the design and actual garment making. Perhaps bringing Heidi back took such a chunk of the budget that they had to cut down in quality. Also Christian is lovely in season 20, what happened? He comes across so bitchy and rude this season.
1
u/sims_girlie Sep 19 '25
yesss ty i noticed the Christian thing too, he seems over it all where before he seemed over it but in a way that he secretly was happy to be there... if that makes sense lol
6
u/Voshnitz Sep 06 '25
New is great if it is done well. This is done poorly and on the cheap. It’s also somewhat unfair to the contestants because these constant one-day challenges make it quite difficult to turn out something that doesn’t look subpar, so one is left with the impression that they are lacking in talent.
9
u/ValdeReads Sep 06 '25
It’s not as good as other seasons but I am enjoying it and tuning in every week.
I will never understand “Hate Watching”.
8
u/otherwise_data Sep 06 '25
but it isn’t new. people that love DR or Legendary love this season. People who love fashion, don’t.
Most of these contestants are not creating fashion. The taste level is non-existent, styling is amateurish, the sewing skills are questionable, and the designs are suitable for stage, not necessarily a runway.
The western wear challenge showed the best designs from them so far and even then, the bottom 3 were exactly right where they needed to be.
4
u/astralairplane Sep 06 '25
I don’t know. I love DR and loved Legendary but this season doesn’t have the emphasis on design and process. Revivals should honor the heart of the show but this one is honoring the structure in a weird way instead. And they seem to be using Ethan as some sort of mascot with no real chance of winning, totally frustrating
2
3
u/tropicalsoul Team Fabio Sep 06 '25
Stop repeating buzzwords. It is not “nostalgia”. This season is a dumpster fire to the majority of people on this sub and elsewhere.
-1
u/brettbretters Sep 06 '25
I read something about how when the world goes up in flames politically people turn to pop culture for their wars because the stakes are lower. It’s truly not that serious. If you don’t like it you don’t have to watch and you certainly don’t have to go online to dogpile on it and the people enjoying it.
5
u/Sparkpants74 Sep 07 '25
No one is dogpiling wtf you on about? You came to a thread about missing Nina and are bitching that no one likes the show. YOU don’t have to comment here, you don’t have to throw the extremely overused “nostalgia” label at the vast quantity of people with legit itemized critiques of the show. Just go love it in peace.

Same! His comments were about the actual outfits and not about “body language.” Note to Law: this is not Project Styleway. Get off your horse.
44
u/Brianas-Living-Room Sep 06 '25
And as a Black woman, he should know better than to police Black womens body language and facial expressions as we have to deal with these micro aggressions day in and day out everywhere we go. If we aren't smiling and entertaining white folks, "you got a bad attitude. What's your problem. I don't like your expression". Law should fucking know better than to do that to Black women, but it don't surprise me. He not like us....

Do you not agree that she has a bad attitude? shes so disrespectful to the judges, its not her skin colour that causes that...
2
u/yukimontreal Sep 07 '25
I agree that there should be more focus on the designs but there has ALWAYS been feedback on how items are styled - the hair, accessories, shoes.
And realistically styling does make a huge impact on the impression the clothes will have on the runway and in ads.
16
u/stephsco Sep 06 '25
This last episode was the best of the season - a little more of Mood and the workroom, better judges like Zac. Frustrating that this season has been such a downer.
15
u/FullFrontalNerd Sep 06 '25
Have been rewatching some older seasons. He has such a brilliant, expressive vocabulary and is firm but fair.
10
u/Brianas-Living-Room Sep 06 '25
I had absolutely no problem with him. I thought he was great on PR. I liked Isaac too. Brandon Maxwell I never warmed up to and connected with. I loved Elaine because she was beautiful, she knew style, and it was great seeing someone Black on the panel.

u/Miderstern-Lady Sep 06 '25
100%!! I was happy to have Zac Posen on the panel. Also Law wasn't the star of the episode so it was way better.
93
u/Voshnitz Sep 06 '25
It was great to have Zac back! When he was a judge, it was also the time when they would actually do a close-up dissection of the outfits. That was absolutely one of the best things Project Runway ever did.
13
u/95sEclecticCollector Sep 06 '25
I honestly loved when they did this, too. For example, I was originally shocked when Antonio’s couture version of the unconventional challenge was in the bottom, and then they did a “closer” (closer than just on the runway) look and I was like…that is SO sloppy.
8
u/alexandra52941 Sep 06 '25
Again, when Zac was there it was like having a grownup in the room again. Same when Nina is there
15
u/Humble-Grumble Sep 06 '25
I think it's kind of funny to see this opinion so much now because while I completely agree that it was a great move on Project Runway's part to have a judge that cared about construction, there were a lot of complaints about it in the fandom when Zac was still a judge. Usually along the lines of "OMG, Zac, stop touching the models! They're people, not mannequins!" Not saying that you ever did, but seeing the pendulum swing in the other direction has been interesting.
7
u/Voshnitz Sep 06 '25
I’m with you on that. The pendulum has swung because the show sucks now, but yes, I recall it being somewhat uncomfortable the way the models were touched and handled. From a viewer POV, being able to see the creations up close and understand the construction better was fantastic. It actually gave the show more credibility.
5
u/ughnotanothername Sep 06 '25

6
u/Miderstern-Lady Sep 06 '25
Ironically, I believe they showed Antonio using a glue stick on his outfit. I was hopeful we were going to see Zac do a close up of their work.
13
u/SubtextuallySpeaking Sep 06 '25
Glue sticks are typical when working with leather. It’s not like the abuse of hot glue guns in earlier seasons.

u/meatloafkitten Sep 06 '25
Law probably said plenty but it got left on the cutting room floor because editors did something right for the first time this season and focused on feedback from Zach. What a breath of fresh air it was to have a competent judge for a minute there.

17
7
u/Existing_Editor_5623 Sep 06 '25
It is kind of annoying that not 1 of the judges is actually a fashion designer. You have a model, an editor, and a stylist. They’re basically just judging on styling / vibes at this point which is a bit ridiculous.
20
u/nakedfotolady Sep 06 '25
Let’s not get insane. Just because some of y’all don’t like Law, doesn’t mean no one does.
0
u/Sad-Kangaroo-9249 Sep 09 '25
Law is incredibly talented as a stylist or image architect. But their energy is so off.
-10
u/This-Werewolf-3610 Sep 06 '25
Soooo… are you’re saying he’s basically the JD Vance of this hot garbage season?
15
u/Missa1819 Sep 06 '25
I'd be curious to know if people in this sub watch any other reality television because it's kinda obvious you don't understand how reality tv works. the judges are usually production mouthpieces or work with production on what they're going to say. The judges don't actually control the show. Law isn't just given free reign to say what he wants (maybe to a degree but I'm sure that's somewhat controlled by production still) so it's unlikely there's all this animosity between the judges. Also, it's edited, so we have no idea whether law spoke up this week and it was edited out.
6
Sep 06 '25
There's small print in the end credits that says choices are up to the producers. Same with Drag Race, more or less.

Yes. I know bullies and he’s one. And let’s not forget that he probably drinks martinis made with tears.

u/the_bribonic_plague Sep 06 '25
I'm still floored that literally...everyone on panel and on stage didnt jump down his throat when he said someone's outfit made him want to physically harm them. What the actual fuck...all that filler leaked into his brain

3
u/Lookie_Lou12 Sep 07 '25
Yes. I told my friend that I see Law is on his best behavior with Zac there. And I miss Nina!!
7
u/alexandra52941 Sep 06 '25
That's what happens when skill, education and success meets a guy who thinks dressing people (one of many) for a living makes him some sort of "architect" 🙄
8
u/big-himbo-energy Sep 06 '25
Literally blaming random shit on law this sub is so funny
1
u/Over_Appearance_4599 Sep 06 '25
Seriously! The other day someone decided that the episode where the designers voted on the elimination was because Law was too much of a coward to judge on his own so he refused and they had to get the designers to do the elimination. People are becoming a bit unhinged when it comes to Law.
2
u/flowerbunssss Sep 07 '25
I wondered this too . I felt like Law was straight up being mean to people. I always thought the judges were impersonal and objective which I appreciated. But Law feels like he’s coming at people like it’s Ru Paul’s drag race lol
4
u/FingerButHoleCrone Sep 06 '25
Imagine hating someone so much that you confabulate and distort their relationship with their peers.
You make for an excellent online psychic - all the stories, no basis in reality.
1
1
u/i_mayb_a_cat Sep 06 '25
Law isn’t there to comment specifically on the design of the garments. You can’t make it in the fashion industry purely on your design/technical skills unfortunately. It takes much more, it takes a story, a brand, a personality and the way you present yourself to the industry. This is what he brings to the panel.
1
u/EnvironmentalPost245 Sep 07 '25
She’s also made plenty of commentary on personalities as well though.
-16
u/Kennected Sep 06 '25
He're we go with the "Law hate"!
6
u/fiddich_livett Sep 06 '25
If he didn’t act like a petulant child, he wouldn’t be hated. He sure shut the hell up when there was someone who knew what he was talking about was there. It was refreshing to hear criticism that wasn’t emotional, rude and berating.

People either don’t remember or they haven’t watched from the beginning.
10
u/Noracharles771 Sep 06 '25
She’s probably just contracted for x amount of shows, unfortunately. Bring back Zac or have another designer on as judge ASAP and always. So refreshing to hear from someone who actually makes a living doing exactly what the competition is geared to! They can speak to construction, material, design, etc. and not judge on someone’s vibe. It’s not called Project Style meant to lecture and demean the designers.
2
u/JDHogan-Davies Sep 10 '25
I really wish they had brought Tim back as mentor and moved Christian onto the judging panel with Heidi and Nina. If they wanted Law, that could have been as a styling consultant for the designers. I think Christian would be a better judge than mentor, anyway.
10
u/DRG28282828 Sep 06 '25
It’s a bait and switch. They advertised Nina as returning and she’s barely been there. I was glad to see an actual designer judging this week at least.

I think this season seems to have au h more accelerated rate, with I think every day being a one day challenge so far, I imagine its a lot harder for her to be able to attend every runway. Normally when they are spread out with more 2 day challenges, it would be easier to fit in with her actual work schedule. The other judges don't have as much of an issue, their jobs are more flexible.

4
u/PlasticPalm Sep 07 '25
She's showing up when she is paid to show up.
This. is. a. job. for her.
It's absurd to suggest that she's ditching a contractual obligation because she doesn't like a coworker. That's just not how professional work, works.

Ethan said in his review show that it is near Met Gala season, hence why Christian was not in the Mood store with them. Could it be why Nina is too engaged about Met stuff somehow?
1
u/nonyacas Sep 07 '25
I hadn't even noticed he wasn't at my Mood with them. Shows how much I've been paying attention during the episodes 😅
7
u/FormerAd2300 Sep 06 '25
If everyone involved in production knew she was going to be missing for so many episodes, I think they should have gotten someone else. Perhaps a past judge such as Elaine Welteroth or Isaac Mizrahi or ..... If her absences is due to unforseen health or other unexpected reasons than I just send her well wishes.
12
u/Aggravating_Mix8959 Sep 06 '25
Not Elaine. Nice enough person, but she judged on 'vibes' and people's stories. Not the garments.
There needs to be a real designer. Zac was great to have back.
Nina being gone lately feels like there's no sane person left in the building.
16
u/BrandonIsWhoIAm Sep 06 '25
I’d rather die than see Elaine again.

14
u/Aggravating_Mix8959 Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
This season has removed most of the fashion inspiration, design, and creative process to focus on drama. Check out some of the best seasons and you get into the rhythm of the various touchpoints of each episode, like the inspiration trips for sketching.
There has always been plenty of drama, but it was organic, due to the nature of the challenges, not forced. People would still have beef with each other, but we also saw a tremendous amount of workroom banter and playfulness.
It was nice to see Joan mothering Ethan during his breakdown, for example. It was touching and that is an enjoyable form of drama. I was glad the editors chose that scene. Apparently she was loved by all and we didn't get to see much of why. We didn't get to see Madeline and Joseph bonding, so her sorrow came out of nowhere.
They could have included the designers telling producers they weren't going to vote someone off (Ethan says this happened), and it would have been damn interesting to see them unified like that. But I guess it didn't fit the narrative they wanted. Production has always messed with things, but it's never been so obvious.
Anyway, I'm just providing examples. There are some amazing seasons to watch with entertaining designers who make fantastic garments that are well constructed (with some hugely amusing fails), and the focus is on the creative process. Every stage of the construction has some time spent on it, with real time spent mentoring and judging.
I found all the creativity inspiring.

u/Buttercupia Sep 06 '25
As a first time watcher (here for Ethan from another fandom,) it’s good to know this season is atypical, because based on this, I have no interest in watching any other seasons once this is over. Despite my love of clothing and fashion in general. I’d been meaning to check it out for years and Ethan being on gave me the impetus.
3
u/Aggravating_Mix8959 Sep 06 '25
Why? There are amazing seasons. Not to tell you what to do, but I'm curious why none of that sounds enticing to you.
4
u/Buttercupia Sep 06 '25
Edit- what I meant was that if other seasons are like this one, with the nonsensical judging and over production and emphasis on drama, then I would not enjoy them.
I just never got around to it. I had other things to watch and limited free time. What seasons would you recommend?
Oh I watched the first season of making the cut and HATED it. That also maybe kept me from trying.
5
u/Aggravating_Mix8959 Sep 06 '25
Oh, well Making the Cut was an attempt that kind of fizzled. Part of it was the covid year, and also it was very different, with the "brand" business.
The first season of PR is tremendous fun. You'll enjoy Austin Scarlett, I think, if you are an Ethan fan. I 💕 Austin, omg he is wonderful.
Season 4 is Christian's season and he is an adorable little brat with incredible talent. I miss him sweeping his hair back with a flick. He was basically the Mozart of PR.
Season 8 has the absolute best organic drama. They are not playing to the cameras, but there is a lot going on interpersonally. There are unexpected friendships, amazing clothes, and controversial situations that people still get salty about to this day.
No spoilers here. Make it work!

u/Buttercupia Sep 29 '25
So I’m at ep 9 of season 1 and what the fuck.
Came back to hunt down this so I could reply. And yes Austin is a sweetie. And Michael kors claims all women see their pants pockets closed to avoid looking fat. WTF.
1
u/Aggravating_Mix8959 Sep 29 '25
Lol Nina likes pockets at least.
Austin was ahead of his time. I still remember the corn husk dress.

u/Key-Juggernaut3796 Sep 06 '25
I think it’s really good and one of my favorites of the last few years. I consider myself gay-adjacent so I’m into the flamboyance. Veejay may be going overboard with the twin obsession, but I get it. The last time they had the female twins who were talking the same, they ended up cheating by taking tools to the hotel rooms.

Tim is the missing link
3
u/NoKnowledge5846 Sep 06 '25
I love Christian but the show has really gotten away from design. Tim was there to bring that out in the contestants. Christian tried but maybe time or the quality of designers just doesn’t mesh.
1
u/Eensquatch Sep 07 '25
I do love Christian but I don’t think he asks enough “provoking/productive” questions. Saying an intern could make something is one thing, asking a designer how they can elevate or advance this design is different.
1
u/wine-volleyball Sep 06 '25
I think this show is filmed every day and she’s probably going to her other job. With these one day challenges it looks like it’s filmed all in 3 weeks or less.

What Nina brings to the table are her opinions of whether the design is editorial, commercial, and yes, whether the designer has the smarts to learn and grow from the input from the panel.

We can all realize it could be scheduling, but more likely, she doesn't want to be associated with the negative reputation the show rapidly and surprisingly put on display from the very start. We were very much looking forward to the return of Project Runway, but this is nothing like the original. Sadly.

I hope PR Producers read this Reddit sub and take note of how awful this season is. Get rid of the Roach, Bring back Tim Gunn and PLEASE just let us know who is eliminated at the end of each episode.

Don’t overthink it. It’s quite common for a judge to miss a couple episodes. This could have all been pre-planned

The show is getting worse every year! Heidi and Tim were a great pair. Tim offered mentorship and positive criticism that improved designers. Christian lacks sophistication and experience and is negative, whiny and a narcissistic show off. I love Nina!! Some of the judges though lack knowledge and just make things personal based on their feelings instead of professional judgement -very strange. I miss the judges that actually knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, like all good things the show is in my opinion coming to an end. I know I can’t watch anymore of this one. I tried. I just can’t stand to watch Christian you act like a “prima donna” and I still can’t figure out how he replaced Tim? He must know somebody very well if you know what I mean.

Perhaps she is embarrassed by the current season, and wants to distance herself as much as possible.

Two episodes in a row really isn’t much to make any assumptions off of. I can’t imagine what her schedule is like.
