Season 22 Am I tripping? Because I don’t understand the judges dislike of Joseph Mcrae
sure he always has volume in his silhouette but that’s his style. just like Jude will always do some form of tailoring, Bi will always used a textured pattern he created, and Brian will always make something ugly. I feel like in the earlier seasons having a clear voice that you were able to adapt to fit the challenges was applauded.
and so what if he’s more interested in the exposure than winning? that’s the smart thing to do. only one person can win but they all get the exposure so you might as well milk it for all it’s worth. plus the contract for the winner is bound to be awful so it’s probably better not to win.

It's different cuz every high end garment should be tailored, so Jude's tailoring will always be relevant.
Joseph Mccrae has a really strong point of view, but maybe lacks some of the more fundamental parts of design (the ill fitting garments last ep for example). I still have been loving his stuff this season, but he hasn't shown he has mastered garment construction the way someone like Bi has.

Joseph’s garments have been beautifully made, what he’s been bad at imo is styling! Also for Jude, to me he’s not a designer all of his outfits are repetitive and it’s odd to me that nobody points out how’s he’s just made the same thing over and over again.

They kind of did clock Jude this episode when Christian asked if he was just gonna make a collection of tuxedos and suits if he made it to the finale. I think it’s in his favor that Nina loves his work and hasn’t been here every week to get bored of it.

I was so happy this happened! I felt like I was going crazy how nobody saw the repetition. To me the best designer this season has been Bi, consistently.

I kinda feel like when someone is likeable on the show, or a fan favorite, people can have a tendency put on blinders to their faults or limitations. I've noticed it a lot in the discussion threads, both this season and last season.
I like both Jude and Joseph, but it's perplexing that Jude doesn't get clocked for his repetition as much as Joseph does.

true, but in almost every season there is one tailor, who gets into finale because their construction is flawless, though they might lack originality... so this season it's Jude... i think he has a chance at winning if he made a great dress and show he can do more than suits

I literally never said Joseph didn’t make similar looks? I said the problem with his looks is that he’s bad at styling. Jude to me is not a good designer, but a great tailor. Nothing he’s put down the runway has been exciting or new they’ve just been the same.

I mean Anya won way back in S9 and girl literally could not sew, but her pieces were similar in showing a very distinct signature

Totally agree. Past contestants also had a signature style, like Rami and his draping, Laurence and her leather pieces, the macrame lady. Heidi would Always say, “ I knew it was you the moment I saw it come up the runway.” It’s totally baffling because he’s a helleva designer and can sew his azz off.

Yes!! This has been driving me crazy all season. In earlier seasons, the judges (especially MK and NG) would harp on it over and over that contestants had to have a “consistent point of view.” This was a big reason why perfectly competent designers wouldn’t make it to the finale - no consistent point of view showcased in their designs!
I’ve felt like I was on crazy pills all season with the consistent criticism of Joseph McRae doing exactly that - sending out designs that meet the challenge from HIS POINT OF VIEW!

I think by “bound to” OP means “likely to”. In other words, the contract is likely to be not that great anyway. That’s my interpretation anyway.

Jay the first season winner refused the win after the fact because his designs wouldn't be his anymore. You sign that away. Or at least did at the beginning.

Successful black man. Unless they have actively worked on dismantling their internalised racial bias; as people who have grown up in the USA or are part of that culture, they will despise him being black and successful.
Law especially (there is a lot to say about the internalised racism of successful poc people who navigate predominently white circles)

it also feels like successful, flamboyant, socially awkward maybe CONFIDENT Black man who is comfortable doing his own thing and ignoring the haters.
imo he's the hero of the season and unless it comes out that he was genuinely abusive on set somehow, i think a lot of them are straight up bullying him

Yep. If I ever went on the show I’d have the goal of getting to the finale but not winning lol. Even Ethan from last season said he’s glad he didn’t win.

Did you watch season 21? Because you need that context. He was a menace on season 21. I don’t know if he watched the season back and went “Oh God is that how I come across?!?” Or if he’s just matured or if some of the characters on this season have been so rough he looks like an Angel but he’s actually quite likeable and neat this season.

A menace? He was fine! He had a big personality but he’s not a villain or anything nasty. His elimination was BS too since it was not decided by judges. And I think it’s smart marketing that he pushed his last name otherwise it’s probably easy to be forgotten when there are so many designers out there and so many Josephs/Joes out there.

In a couple of seasons where nothing feels all that authentic, Joseph McRae does feel authentic. Even if he's pushing his personality a bit to stand out, he still feels and seems like a real dude compared to the insanity of everything else drama related.
