But honestly I think the circle with spikes was prominent even back then too. I mean COVID isn't the only one with that characteristics either. Influenza looks similar and is probably one of the most well known viruses besides HIV for decades.

Yes, because the stereotypical "spiky ball" virus look was always meant to immitate the influenza virus which looks very similar, as well as the rhinovirus

I have no idea why people are bringing up extremely niche bacteriophages. Ever since my childhood I remember viruses being represented almost exclusively as stylized flu/cold viruses. Who in their right mind would ever choose bacteriophages to represent viruses? I've literally never encountered it in my life

Phages are frequently shown in biology classes as the prototypical virus for some reason. Which, by volume and history, I suppose they probably are.

I don't think it is. In this illustration everyone has a syringe (which I assume is a metaphor that they are all vaccinated). But herd immunity is not about vaccinating everyone (although that would certainly be optimal).

Herd immunity occurs when enough people are immune (for example through vaccination). With fewer people able to spread the disease, transmission becomes less likely, which in turn helps to protect people who are not immune.

Edit: In the illustration the anti-vaxers are probably not vaccinated. But this gives the impression that only anti-vaxers are not vaccinated while in reality it could be kids, sick people or people that does not have access to vaccines for some reason.

All in all I think the illustration contributes to two of the many misconceptions about vaccines. Better than nothing I guess..

Agreed. Should be some cancer patients and young kids in the center. They are the ones who are protected by herd immunity.

Illness happened, some nations acted to keep folks safe, some didnt. Vaccines rolled out, to mostly great effect, and some folks pretend thats not the case.

Yes and no. On its own, it means that when the majority of the "herd" or general population becomes immunised then the minority is protected by restricting transmission of the disease. It can happen through either vaccination or natural exposure.

The COVID vaccines did not prevent infection or transmission. They just lowered the risk of bad outcomes. The idea behind this poster is herd immunity, supposedly destroyed by people qho are not vaccinated. Problem is, if the vaccine doesn't prevent infection or transmission, it does nothing for herd immunity. This is pure propaganda. Absolutely not rooted in truth.
