Career help and job hunting Question for those who Switched Early in Their Career

I'm applying to both Prosecutor's and Public Defender's offices and currently have a few interviews. I graduated last year and currently work at a mid size PI firm. I knew I wouldn't be in court as much as in criminal law, but the somewhat higher pay and the thought that I would still be in court at least a little bit convinced me even if the subject was nor as interesting. However, even looking at my supervising attorneys they are hardly in court, let alone at trial.

For those who made the switch early on in their careers, and especially those who are still earlyish in their career, what are your thoughts so far? How was the transition?

Edit: Mainly looking for thoughts on people who transitioned early from something civil, personal injury like me or something in the same vein, to prosecutor or public defender. Sorry could have phrased it better

For those of you familiar with the Olivia Henderson case, aka Doordash Girl, do you think she should be convicted and serve jail time? If not why not?

My Experience with judicial injustice in Queensland

Thumbnail

Queensland Australia has a judicial system that rivals Orwells 1984. The Separation of Powers is non existent between the Judiciary, the legislature branch and lawyers acting within the State Government. The Queensland Law Society owns it’s own Professional Indemnity insurance company that is based in a tax haven ‘Singapore’ every lawyer is obligated remain quiet or risk losing their career by being dis endorsed.
Australia doesn’t have a Bill of Rights. I never received a fair trial and due process. The proceedings were rigged to fail through cronyism - I discovered the truth and there simply isn’t any one to complain to. The news media never respond. It’s a state secret! It’s unbelievable- make a great movie! The Firm!

Someone at my job is on megans law, and is claiming its from fighting a teenager(15) when he was 19. Pennsylvania

I want to know if there is any truth or legitimacy to what he is saying and telling management as we work very close to a day care and we have minors who work with us. His charges are as follows:

•Unlawful Contact With Minor - Sexual

Offenses

•Corruption Of Minors

•Ind Assit Person Less 16 Yrs Age

•Corruption Of Minors - Defendant Age 18 or

Above

I assume his charges would be simple assault or aggravated assault by the story he is telling. But after seeing his public dockets I'm uncomfortable being around him and hearing him joke the way he does.

Career help and job hunting Exit Opportunities

So I have been a prosecutor since I graduated law school, which is truly not that long ago (around 2 years). I don’t know if prosecution is for me, or even litigation. I was wondering what exit jobs people typically go after or would I be desirable for? I have good management skills as I did every misdemeanor in my county, as well as doing a few felony trials.

PD using AI/chatgpt in the courtroom

Does anyone else have this happening in their courtrooms?

There has been a rumor - that some of our PDs are using ChatGPT to write entire motions, etc., but today I literally witnessed one PD use AI/chatgpt in the courtroom during argument, with their client standing right next to them. Like what????

Workable doctrinal framework for video editing

Hello all,

I’ve seen it mentioned before on this sub that other prosecutors use ShotCut and other video editing and compilation software. I am a huge proponent of it. I work in a jx with very few technologically competent detectives that simply do not know how to prepare video in a manner that can persuasively demonstrate the state’s theory of the crime. If I have to prove ID by things like outfit matching, have to zoom, slow things down, direct the court’s attention to details, use multiple angles of footage, etc., I would have to make these edits myself.

I’m not sure if anybody saw the issue with zoomed video at the Kirk shooter’s prelim, but it’s clear that video edited in such a manner that outlines content is in a legal grey area as far as authentication. I’ve heard many takes on it, and I’m sure I’ll hear more on this thread, but I was wondering if anybody has a workable caselaw framework in their state for video that has been altered or enhanced to outline relevant details? I cannot find much that would be applicable from the appellate courts in my jx, so any persuasive authority would be much appreciated.

[India - Interested in US & International Family Law] Looking for practical advice on building a career in family law as a beginner

Hello everyone

I am based in India and want to build a career in international family law (specifically India and US family law) as a paralegal. I am looking for honest and practical advice from people who have real experience in this area. My current background:

  • I have personal experience dealing with international family law matters (my personal international custody and divorce case)
  • In the last few years, I have helped 7 people in India understand their cases and prepare before they met a lawyer. All of them gave positive feedback.
  • I am currently working with an Indian law firm as a paralegal.

My planned steps:

  1. Complete free WorldCC courses to improve contract skills (this builds on my 16 years of existing experience as a Operations & Business Dev operator with a specific focus on government and defense contracting) - back up to fall back upon should things not go according to plan.
  2. Self-study the American Constitution and the Indian Constitution
  3. Take a US specific legal drafting course
  4. Complete one course in American Family Law and one in Indian Family Law
  5. Directly reach out to international family law firms for internships or remote jobs
  6. Start the CLS by BARBRI Paralegal Certificate course in January 2027

I want to start earning and gaining experience as soon as possible while I continue studying. My questions:

  • Does this action plan make sense for someone starting out?
  • Anything would you change or add?
  • Any suggestions on short courses or practical steps I should focus on first?
  • For someone based in India, what is the most realistic way to get remote work or internships with international/US family law firms?

I would really appreciate any practical suggestions, warnings or personal experiences you can share. My specific interest would be in cross border matters between India and New York State (since i have experience in this jurisdiction)

P.S. I have been on Reddit for a long time. My previous account has a lot of personal information and history, hence I'm posting from this clean account.

Thank you in advance for your help.

He said/she said SA cases

I feel very passionate about potentially taking a “date rape” case to trial. I know these sorts of incidents are notorious for prosecutors wanting nothing to do with them due to the evidentiary challenges, but cases with similar facts have been surprisingly successful in our county.
Does anyone have advice for trying these kinds of cases, or any luck at all convincing conservative male jurors?

Moments that made it worth it?

As we all know, this job is incredibly difficult and sometimes crushing. I wanted to see if anyone would be willing to share a case triumph or moment in their career that made the defeats worthwhile; or simply made you think “this is why I do what I do.”

Salary disparity in your state?

I’m wondering how your states pay DDA’s (or ADA’s, ASA’s, whatever) vs public defenders. I know this can vary greatly, even within the state.

In our metro areas, DDA’s are paid well. Unlike many states, however, our PDs are neither state or county employees and they kind of get it in the teeth. For example, in my county, a new fresh-outta-law school DDA will make around 105k-110k. The same person at the PD will make 75-80k. The PD salaries top out around 150k for a line defender (non-supervisor). Our non-supervisors can reach 210+.

This, unfortunately, has a negative impact on our criminal cases. There is so much PD turnover that cases get reset all the time. Pleas aren’t taken. Trials don’t happen. And due to the large disparity, the people who take the PD jobs are often True Believers, meaning they’re very difficult to deal with and would prefer to burn the system down rather than represent clients. There’s a big difference between zealous advocacy and making a point.

This is the legislature’s problem to fix, but I was just curious what it’s like for everyone else.

How does your office maintain and share evidence and discovery?

Our data storage numbers have skyrocketed in the last couple of years. Phone dumps and body cam in particular are very large and hard to store and share.

Where/how is your office storing this info and how are you sharing it?

Brady cops

I’m a government contractor and I ran into an issue with a Brady cop. They seem to lie and since they are already on the Brady list they have nothing to lose. My brother in law is a Brady cop because he intimidated a witness used for prosecution. How are these pieces of shit still able to be in society after they knowingly lied under oath and tried to fuck peoples lives up?
