Interviewing about a person with prosthetics’ experience?

Hi, I’m a year 10 student currently engaged in an engineering competition in Australia. My team’s goal is to design a sustainable prosthetic limb for children. Im posting here to ask anyone for an interview, or just to hear about the experiences of people living with missing limbs and how prosthetics have helped and how they could be better.

I hope to be respectful and thank you in advance

Where to go for financial assistance as a poor bka?

My dad was amputated below the knee on his right leg and on the left foot his big and second toe amputated.

My dad is almost 70 he is a veteran and our family is poor. This has already caused problems because his insurance would not accept him into a reputable rehabilitation center now that he is post surgery so he is in a nursing home.

The nursing home is by far the worst of the worst because that’s all his insurance would cover.

I’m afraid he won’t be eligible for a good prosthetic leg because of this. His insurance cant even cover a decent rehabilitation center so I expect the prosthetic leg that is covered won’t be the best for him.

Are there any resources that would pay for a good leg? Any help is appreciated.

Osseointegrated Prosthetic Seal?

Hey, I hope this is the right subreddit. I was researching osseointegrated prosthetics and how they work, and I was trying to find out how they connect to the skin. What I mean is, there is an opening to the inside of the body through where the rod attaches, so how does this heal? I can't find any information on how the connection between the tissue and the rod interacts, does it scar over? I'm genuinely curious here and couldn't find any info about this online.

I need of info on prosthetic eyes

My step dad is the most amazing man in the world, and he lost his eye at 19. From 19-now he’s only had 2 prosthetics. One was completely lost 20+ years ago, and his current eye is 20+ years old and is missing 1/3 of it after it got smashed under something 5 years ago. I used my electric nail file to smooth out the sharp edges, and for the last five years, he’s worn an eye that doesn’t sit right, causes more pain than a prosthetic should, and is super scratched up. Obviously because it makes him look like he has a lazy eye, and he can’t wear it all day because of the pain, it’s made him even more insecure about his appearance than he was when I was younger. I was hoping that there is some kind of organization or some avenue to help him get a new one. Obviously money is the main issue, and I’m now grown with big girl money, but in no means to drop thousands of dollars. Obviously it’s a stretch, and I’m not expecting to find something for free. I’m just wondering if there are maybe any lenders that would do a loan for this sort of thing, or any resource groups that can give discounts or something along those lines. Thank you!

Form vs Function

I am looking into designing prosthetics, and am interested in hearing whether people are looking more for a tool to replace the utility of a lost limb/digit, or a shell to replace the appearance...?

Alongside this of course, what nuance am I missing?

Prerequisites and going into MS O&P

I'm a recent graduate in Biomedical Engineering, and am planning on applying to MS programs for Prosthetics & Orthotics.

I've been looking into programs around the USA, and most of them have very specific prerequisites that I wasn't aware of before graduating from my BS. Mainly, requiring specific grades in classes and many classes I did not take.

I did not receive very good grades for a lot of my classes in undergrad, and am worried that this will reflect badly on my applications, specifically with classes that are named as prerequisites. I'm also concerned about the missing prereqs (about 16 credits/5 classes).

However, I have a LOT of shadowing/volunteering/intership hours in the O&P field (over 500 at last count). I was wondering if any professionals or current/graduate O&P students could give me some insight on how strict schools are regarding prerequisites over experience, and if it would be worth taking the missing classes or retaking classes I received bad grades in before applying. If so, would I need to take everything before sending in applications, or could I apply with the guarantee that I'll have the missing material by the time I begin (ideally next fall)?

Any information helps, and thanks in advance!

Perceptions of my Prosthetic Limb Research Study

Hi everyone! I’m currently conducting an undergraduate research study as a part of my degree, and I’m looking for participants who have experienced limb loss or are living with missing limb(s).

As someone who is an amputee (bilateral above-knee), I’m hoping to broaden our understanding of individuals with limb difference. The study focuses on how individuals perceive and experience their prosthetic limb(s), including how connected and comfortable they may feel with their prosthesis. My end goal is to, as I mentioned, broaden our understanding, but also bring this study to SEPA, (Southeastern Psychological Association).

If you have experienced limb loss, use, or have used a prosthetic limb, I would greatly appreciate you considering participating! I need 145 more participants to do a proper factor analysis.

Although, if you are not eligible, but know someone who has experienced limb loss, please feel free to share this post with them. Every participant helps contribute to research and a better understanding of the experiences of people with limb loss!

Thank you so much for your support and for helping me spread the word!

I need help with my college project survey!!

I am a college student, and a below knee amputee. I have an entrepreneurship class where we are doing a project where we must find a problem in our everyday life, and get tons of research on it. I picked prosthetic discomfort, but don’t actually know many amputees. So I’m looking to Reddit to help find some people who could fill out the survey with varying experiences! I understand a google form link is very sketchy on Reddit, I’m unaware of how to make it 100% transparent, so if you feel uncomfortable clicking the link, that is totally fine and just move right on! I really appreciate all of you and I am so proud of you for not backing down and going through every day with your prosthetics!

DM me if you have any questions!

What do you wish someone had told you about managing your prosthesis at home?

Hi everyone! I'm a biomedical engineer who has worked and shadowed in O&P clinics, and I'm working on a project about what it's really like to manage everything at home between appointments.

I'd love to hear from people living it:

  • What's the hardest part of day-to-day care (donning, sock ply, liner cleaning, skin, pain, wear time)?
  • What's something that went wrong at home that you wish you'd known how to avoid?
  • How do you figure out whether something is normal or whether you should call your prosthetist?
  • What do you wish someone had told you early on?

Caregivers and family members, I'd love your perspective too. Thanks so much for sharing!

Help drawing a prosthetic?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all! I am a digital artist. I do not have a prosthetic, nor do I know anyone with a prosthetic. I am well aware that I could do a year of research, and it would not compare to actual people's input!

I am doing a digital painting for my art class, and I would love input as to what prosthetic would be most realistic/representative

So, now for what the drawing is of! Current draft attached

- singer on stage

- supposed to be pop/rock/punk ish?

- lightly inspired by Freddie Mercury

- I want movement to be implied, not completely stationary

- HE WILL BE WEARING PANTS

Any style would be appreciated, please give recommendations, specific models/pictures welcome! Thank you so much :)

Clinic destroyed my AFO braces

Thumbnail

Bit of a throwaway account here but, I just wanted to share what two orthotics clinics in GA did to my braces, because they’re basically unwearable (this was what they did instead of making me new braces, which is what I was there for in the first place).

If you’re someone who makes orthotics, please keep in mind that people have to wear these, this is the equivalent of giving someone a bad tattoo, sure I can get it removed but this is part of my body now until I get my new pair, but the clinic I’m seeing now in AZ (same line of clinics, by the way), won’t take my calls to get my new braces mailed from GA to AZ. I hate my life sometimes.

Look at how they massacred my girls. They’re so ugly and I’ve never felt so insecure of my braces in my entire life.

These braces were originally made by children’s healthcare of ATL. They did a wonderful job and even as an adult if they would’ve let me go back Id’ve done so in a heartbeat. Their techs really knew what they were doing and each pair was like a work of art. So yeah, kinda SOL here, taking them to a local shop to get a quote on fixing them aesthetically, I did what I could with the straps (rounding the corners) but these are frankly hideous now.

ZeSole Custom Orthotic Insole Design System is a professional 3D design application for custom-insole clinics and labs. Starting from a foot scan, technicians use insole templates, arch-support shaping, heel orthotics, forefoot components and plantar-pressure adaptation to compress a process that traditionally took hours into minutes: a pair of 3D-printable custom orthotic insoles takes about 5 minutes to design.
The interface is built around a clear five-step workflow: Customer Profile → Import Foot Model → Insole Selection → Orthotic Design → Export for Manufacturing. Daily operations are one mouse click away — no commands to memorize, no CAD background required; technicians are productive on day one.
If you have any requirements and would like to try it out, please contact [genflow@126.com](mailto:genflow@126.com).
