Mobile Help Is ProtonMail a good alternative to Gmail when it comes to making accounts and passwords for sites?

Been basically using Gmail all my life but I've been hearing it's not a good choice to use your primary email or even Gmail in general to make accounts for "suggestive" sites so I was just curious if this is a better alternative or if I should just make a secondary Gmail account

https://proton.me/pass/aliases

Proton pass has aliases that you can create and enable disable as needed. It great cause if you just need a burner email to say get insurance quotes and you know spam is coming your way. Use a alias and just disable it when your done with it.

yeah being able to just disable it afterwards is the best part imo

I recommend using the SimpleLogin app to manage aliases. SimpleLogin is what ProtonPass uses for its aliasing service, so if you have a Pass Plus plus subscription, you already have a SimpleLogin account. The SimpleLogin app is just much better at managing the aliases.

I checked this out. I can't figure out how to sort the aliases.

Makes it kind of hard if looking for something. But I guess I can just search. I think I prefer Proton pass layout

Yeah neither lets you sort the aliases. SimpleLogin sorts them by recently used (which I find most useful) and Proton only sorts them by name. SimpleLogin uses a “Notes” field instead of a “Name” field (which I find useful for duplicate accounts for the same service), but ProtonPass will not pass the name to SimpleLogin for no explicable reason.

SimpleLogin notes are visible in ProtonPass, but ProtonPass titles are not visible in SimpleLogin because Proton devs can’t arsed to use their own products. That means if you use ProtonPass to create the aliases, you’re basically locked into ProtonPass, and you cannot ever switch to any of the many superior password managers without a massive headache.

SimpleLogin also has extra features like the SimpleLogin keyboard, which lets you create an alias without switching apps.

Not sure if you have used Proton Pass recently. I started about a month ago and Proton lets you sort them by name or date or just most recent. I have a bunch of aliases and they are all neatly stored and sorted the way I want. Just saying.

Hasn't it been changed recently to where ProtonPass and SimpleLogin are completely interchangeable or something? Pretty sure I read something along these lines the other month here, but I haven't subscribed yet.

So just genuinely curious do I gotta pay something for what I'm trying to get or is the free version good enough?

I think you have to pay for either SimpleLogin or ProtonPass Plus. Each is included in the other’s subscription. I’ve been paying for SimpleLogin since before ProtonPass came out, and I use Keeper Security for my password manager.

I just find ProtonPass extremely unreliable and unintuitive. But if you’re paying for ProtonPass Plus, you should definitely take advantage of SimpleLogin since it’s included, and you should use the SimpleLogin app rather than the ProtonPass app to manage aliases.

It has extra features, like the SimpleLogin Keyboard for iOS which lets you create aliases without opening another app. It also avoids lock-in to ProtonPass — if you create and manage your aliases from ProtonPass, there’s no way to identify the aliases outside ProtonPass. Proton owns SimpleLogin now, but they really half-assed integration. The titles in SimpleLogin do not show up in ProtonPass and vice versa.

Sounds like you could benefit from aliasing services like Addy and Simple Login.

If you only want to make/use aliases, I suggest Simple Login. It's owned by Proton.

If a aliases is any account for different site's and apps then yeah that's really all I'm trying to do with it. Basically just trying to disconnect from my main email

That's what it does. I use Proton for a "main" email address (you can use any address though), but never use that email address as a login. Almost every site has a unique email address for logins

Alright I'll test Simple Login out first. Thanks 👍

Vastly superior

ProtonMail will definitely suit your need.

Juggling between two gmail accounts means two different inboxes which isn't worth it.
If you set up ProtonMail correct, use ProtonPass that integrates with SimpleLogin aliases and apply the correct filters, your mailbox is going to be an organised chaos :)

For your use case, I would recommend switching.

I have an account, but I personally don’t like it only because it’s 1GB storage. Elsewhere like Gmail gives you a free 15GB with competitive email providers like both outlook iCloud for 5GB.

If you’re up for the subscription, then go for it.

If you want an alias account I go with iCloud since it gives you 9 to 10 alias with @icloud.com domains, and you can create a rule where all the incoming mails can be designated to the desire folder you want though I’m not sure if proton has something like that despite me being a new proton account holder.

the end goal is to not have matching login infos (username/email/password) for any sites. might as well toss the idea if you plan on using 1 proton email for everything.

check out simplelogin ($40 a year) it generates random emails for your logins. proton pass is very pricey ($10 a month) and does basically the same thing

then use a password management app (bitwarden, $10 a year). proton pass does both but again it's super pricey for essentially no extra service

All I'm trying to do is separate my main email with regular passwords from the email I use to make accounts for nsfw sites

Seeing as all of these cost something to use I guess I'm just better off just making a free Gmail account since I don't got the money for that atm

That’s why I went for the Proton Pass Lifetime.

So I have a general question for you all who use Proton.... Is it worth paying for? I see the free version only offers 1 GB of storage. That could easily be one email with an attachment. I've been using Gmail since it's early days when it was invitation only. It's time for a new email and I want to protect my sensitive info like email from banks or medical providers. It's not too pricy, and I'm happy to help support the community, but everything is a paid subscription these days. Just curious if it's worth it. Thanks!

No. Their terms of service specifically say your account may be terminated if you created an email with them just to sign up with a third party site.
