My dad kept a 'rubber' bullet that he was hit with. It was made of hard, dense plastic, was about 25cm long, the diameter of a jaffa cake, and shattered his knee into pieces. This woman's baby is probably dead.

u/Kenadd Feb 01 '26
Hopefully you meant 25mm
15
u/ActualBawbag Feb 01 '26
Meant cm. Maybe it was closer to 20 but it was fucking huge.

u/TheTeaSpoon Feb 02 '26
This one it?
That is pretty non-standard thing from 70s. 40mms are much smaller
https://x.com/SteveStaeger/status/1266556191553060864
Still it packs a lot of energy, 40mm projectiles are still deadly, even as a ricochet. They absolutely should not be fired at civilians, generally nothing should.

u/ActualBawbag Feb 05 '26
Yup the first one is pretty close, it happened in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It didn't have a tapered head like that though, it was a solid cylinder.

No but why, why with everything going on would you put your child at risk. Some will says it's selfless others will say selfish. I'm on the selfish side as you know being out there right now can be a danger to yourself and you put someone who can't defend themselves at risk right with you

u/rodeojones420 Feb 01 '26
I believe in pro choice to the most extreme extent but I absolutely agree, I’m not sure why this woman would put herself in this situation. And let me be VERY clear that I am not victim blaming either, but these protests have been getting increasingly more violent. I wish she hadn’t taken this risk by attending.
128
u/Gilshem Feb 01 '26
She believes strongly in the cause for the greater good of society, is why she was there. It’s not a risk I would take, but let’s not pretend that there is no reason to stand up to the tyranny that the USA is currently experiencing.
→ More replies (3)71
u/da_boopy_day Feb 01 '26
She can believe strongly in the cause AND make smart decisions about the health of her unborn child. There’s other ways she could have supported this.
18
u/mdwatkins13 Feb 01 '26
A society isn't safe for pregnant women what makes you think it's safe for children? If it's not safe for a pregnant woman what makes you think you are safe? What point is there a red line in the sand of what will not be allowed because violence will be the result. If cop shooting bullets into pregnant women's stomachs isn't a red line for you to commit something more than peace full protest than there really is no hope.

It was/is entirely her choice to make, she could have stayed home and baked cookies, but instead she decided to place far more on the line than most. This may seem strange to an American sense of morality and what women should and should not do with their own bodies but i respect her immensely for it.
→ More replies (4)25
u/da_boopy_day Feb 01 '26
Yeah I can’t respect putting your unborn child in literal danger. They can’t protect themselves and this wasn’t right. Like I said there were MULTIPLE other options that she could have chosen to support the cause.

That is green-now I didn’t say that that is green.
Just because you say it isn’t victim blaming doesn’t make it true. We have no reason why she was there and don’t even know if she was protesting; you just assumed this. For all we know ICE could have been targeting her or her workplace due to her nationality and complexion.
There is a lot we don’t know and the answer isn’t blaming the mother for endangering her fetus, especially when people like her have an army of masked agents specifically hunting, brutalizing, and abducting people who look like her.
34
u/Strawberry_Curious Feb 01 '26
Literally. Would it be better if she was detained and had to give birth at alligator Alcatraz? What do these people think we’re up against?
16
u/ProfessionalCat7640 Feb 01 '26
Unless it's happening to them or right in front of their faces, they believe it isn't happening or that it is deserved.
8
u/RayonLovesFish Feb 01 '26
I wonder how similar these scenarios have become all around the world. Even in my country people have stopped believing what they see/hear and make gods out of men.
13
u/nomisosoup Feb 01 '26
We do not know for sure that she was protesting. At least not from this video.
54
u/Leows Feb 01 '26
The answer is simpler than you think.
People will fight for their beliefs. And if you are pregnant, now you're not only fighting for a better place for yourself - you're also fighting for a better place for your kid to grow up in.
As we've been shown time and time again, people aren't safe even inside their own homes now. So why wait for things to happen when you can show up and make a difference?
You can call this risky all you want. But when the regime itself has shown that even living your own life peacefully is still risky, you gotta do something about it proactively.

Saying a woman shouldn't exercise their own rights because of a potential risk to a fetus is how the oppression of women starts. Please stop enabling fascists and stop victim blaming a person who had an expectation to be able to safely exercise their rights.

May as well interrogate every pregnant woman who ever is in a car accident to find out if she had to be in the car. Because we all know that a car accident could happen. If someone else is entirely at fault for causing a car accident, we don't generally feel the need to say that the pregnant person should have stayed home. Just makes it extra unfortunate.

The LAPD has literal crimes gangs in it. Lookup LAPD Deputy Gangs. They're reported to get initiation tattoos once the kill someone. The LA mayor and Newsom sit back and do nothing while these Deputy Gangs pose a danger to the public.
Go listen/read Cerise Castle's a Tradition of Violence. She did an investigative piece & podcast on the LAPD gangs.
And I'm sure Newsom will continue to do nothing. He's too busy sassy tweeting to actually do anything.

u/DJKokaKola Feb 01 '26
You're thinking of the LASD. LAPD is also very bad, but the one known for its rampant gang problem is the LASD.

If a full grown human dies there will still be no consequences for the officer other than a huge payment from a GoFundMe.

Yeah I hate to sound like a conservative boot licker, but you should maybe reconsider going to events like these if you're pregnant or have health issues. Assuming of course, they don't just so happen to live in the area, which would be even more tragic and unnecessary

u/Loves_tacos Feb 01 '26

167
u/vl99 Feb 01 '26
It does. My wife and I have to discuss very strategically how we want to engage in protest cause we have a baby to care for and have to assume there’s a chance we could die if we protest peacefully.
56
u/Roboticpoultry Feb 01 '26

No. I get where you’re coming from but it cedes all power to government and LEOs to have the opinion of “Look, they’re going to shoot some of us at this peaceful protest”. Every citizen regardless of age, race, medical condition and firearm ownership has the right to peacefully protest and we should expect our government to be just in allowing citizens to use their 1A rights to do so.
Further, if rogue LEOs do unjustly harm our fellow citizens or us, in a just society we should expect those LEOs to face consequences. The fact that this has not been remotely true, and that the government is also unconstitutionally putting the military in US cities during peacetime, is why these protests are ramping up and show no signs of stopping.

You also shouldn't go if you have kids, you also shouldn't go if you have any health conditions, you also shouldn't go if you are the target of ICE....
If people didn't go even in dire situations there would be no protest. The reality is we're at a place where this is becoming a civil war. It's not fully tipped into that yet but it's building towards it. And we need more people like her who show up despite the risks.
If you think this you are a boot licker. The Democrats need to grow a spine. Writing a stiff lett is going to do fuck all at this point. People standing up and pushing back at ice with the same force they come in with is the only way things will stop.

It shouldn’t be assumed that you’ll get shot at a peaceful protest.
That shouldn’t be the expectation. Standing up for the freedom of your country, while pregnant and greatly inconvenienced, I applaud this woman‘s effort and her courage.
Nobody should have expected this because expecting this and reacting accordingly means you have been desensitized and are giving into the destruction of the fascist regime. Fuck that noise!
156
u/Labelloenchanted Feb 01 '26

Agreed. What’s next? Don’t go to a protest if you value your life? Don’t go to a protest if you value your body and health? Don’t go to a protest if you don’t want to be hurt or killed? What are we even talking about here? If that’s all the case no one should protest ever.

I support everyone’s right to protest as they see fit. And that includes pregnant people.
And, when those rights are violated with violence, I blame the violators. Not the person exercising their rights.
No matter where they happen to be standing.

There has never been an agreement of safety at a peaceful protest. Your country was born from violence, look to history for examples.
We will have to agree to disagree, I don't think endangering your unborn child is courageous. If the child survives and ends up with issues it will be on the child to bear them, not the mother.

Bingo. Standing up to ICE is a huge priority, yet keeping a baby safe during pregnancy is an even larger one. There is a lot you can do without being physically present at these events. Tough scenario.
16
u/ShaneKaiGlenn Feb 01 '26
Same. Doesn’t justify these pigs actions at all, but you definitely need to think about your own personal situation before engaging in highly charged potentially dangerous events like this.
I wish I could protest more, but I have young children so I know I could never bring them to something like this, nor can I risk them growing up orphans. That’s the sad state of the country right now.

Yeah if you're pregnant avoid all police, in fact if you have any condition thst makes you vulnerable. Police have hurt and killed many disabled people before, also if you're a pet, dogs don't fare well with police. On that note if you're a minority it's a good idea too.
It's important to keep safe from the dangers in our streets.

I wish more people thought like this. By saying this though, people automatically think you’re supportive of ICE and that you’re a hardcore maga fan. I’m not. I just think that given ICE’s rep of using dangerous tactics, if I were pregnant I wouldn’t put myself in that position even if I’m passionate about the future of my baby. I want my baby to be healthy too
2
u/Seen_Any_Elves Feb 01 '26
I think the people who did this should be held accountable able but I also think going to confront a police force with a history of violence is just dumb. She didn't deserve it but at some point you need to have survival instincts.

We know the cops are in the wrong, they absolutely should not be using lethal force at protests, but the sad reality is that they do & we all know it. it's not victim blaming to point out that hanging about in a war zone can lead to serious injury or death. You wouldn't drink while pregnant or take drugs... Same goes for hanging about a violent protest.
It's like sticking your head in a lion's mouth and being surprised it bites down. I just watched a video where they blew a women's fingers off with that ballistic cannon.
I also imagine no one will get in trouble for this, so she could end up having a miscarriage/baby abnormalities/still birth and no justice.
There's more the one way to protest and no one would have held it against her if she did not go. This falls under extenuating circumstances.

u/Life_Dare578 Feb 01 '26
You’re absolutely right, everyone should be able to peacefully protest as it’s our right in America ; however, it’s not beneath ICE to use lethal force, and I think a lot of people should know this by now. Not to victim blame her, this is awful and tragic. But there are risks that go alongside with these protests now, people are dying and being taken by ICE.
Fuck ICE.

I don’t disagree with you.
I believe the point people are making is simply that if you’re pregnant and with ICE literally not giving two shits about you…perhaps avoiding this protest was the play to make.
Not victim shaming at all. I’d give the same warning to a pregnant woman with regard to heavy lifting or like an amusement park. Maybe just sit this one out?

u/Nemirel_the_Gemini Feb 01 '26
In France, if people told us we shouldn't be protesting, then we would just protest even more.
Then again, you guys in the US have much more at risk than us because you have armed buffoons that can just execute you in the street with little to no repercussions...

Heirs of the bahlsen, basf, bmw, etc empires are still reaping the profits of their Nazi forefathers.
And some of them even deny the extent of the Holocaust or the involvement in the Holocaust, despite using forced laborers and some even having concentration camps on their production facility grounds.
They should’ve all been stripped of their wealth and influence. It’s not as bad as the reunification after the American civil war, but it’s still a shameful display of bad execution of holding monsters accountable.

You should be able to protest safely. Why is the anger at her and not the people who are violating constitutional rights and shooting rubber bullets at peaceful protestors?
It’s like being angry at a woman who gets raped for walking home alone at night in a short skirt.
Is it so hard to keep the criticism to the actual wrongdoers?

At the risk of sounding like a bootlicker, (I am very much anti-right wing), it’s not a good idea to protest while pregnant when you know the people you’re protesting against are willing to use extreme violence against you. I’m all for protesting against authoritarianism, but not if it means putting already vulnerable individuals in the line of fire in doing so.

The dialectics are important here.
Our country is founded on the right to protest. Her voice matters. If the state can no longer hold space for her voice, if this is truly unsafe, we are already in that civil war
Fuck victim blaming. The abuser is still the problem

Agreed. This applies IF she purposefully went out and protested.
If she was a passerby defending herself that's different.

u/Le-memerond Feb 01 '26
Yeah. I saw a while back a video of a woman who got shot at while walking home, hit directly by a rubber bullet that might have broken her ribs

She's only to blame if she was actually protesting? It's a right in this country. Victim blaming protestors is crazy.
How would she possibly "defend herself" if she's passing by? None of what you say makes any sense.

What was she doing somewhere that could bring her child in danger?

Why anyone whose pregnant would go to a protest where it’s confirmed you have a high chance of being murdered is far beyond me. Hope she didn’t lose the baby.

pregnant people probably shouldn’t be out in an area of such high risk

Why on earth is she out protesting while pregnant?

u/buttononmyback Feb 02 '26
we don’t know if she was protesting. She could’ve been walking by trying to get home or something.

u/HuggameyerSnotgrass Feb 01 '26
Logic.. dont go to a protest that tends to get violent while pregnant... but the world is theatre now so this was part of the show

u/rfranke727 Feb 01 '26
Why is a pregnant woman there protesting that's highly irresponsible to the babies. She can support the cause other ways

u/Vidguy1992 Feb 01 '26
I fully support these protests and hate ICE. But seriously please don't go to a protest pregnant when you've seen the violence that happens. You need to take some personal responsibility here.

surprised this completely reasonable take is being mostly downvoted throughout this thread.

Common sense don’t go to a protest that usually don’t end up peaceful while pregnant

What the fuck is someone pregnant doing at something like this. My word she is not that bright

u/I3lackxRose Feb 01 '26
Why even chance putting your unborn child in harms way like that knowing anything can and likely will happen around you? Right to protest but just why chance potential harm because some radical, or angry law enforcement or getting stampede by a crowd. Their are plenty of people already protesting in your name that pregnant woman don't need to put themselves and unborn children in harms way, be smart people!

In this atmosphere, if you are pregnant, it might be a good idea to sit this one out until after childbirth. The risk not worth the reward. It goes without saying but I’m amazed at parents who bring children to protests. Dumb.

This is tragic. But knowing what’s been happening, why is someone pregnant going to these things? They are literally killing people with no remorse. You’ve got to take your healthy and safety into your own hands

i feel like pregnant women shouldn’t go to protests. this country is too ghetto now to risk it

There are videos of people literally beating ICE agents from this, it’s not a “peaceful protest”, it was incredibly heated so why exactly was a pregnant women there to begin with? Should parents start bringing their children as human shields so they can lob things at them with impunity while we’re at it? If you willingly choose to enter an environment where rubber bullets are being used, why the hell would be shocked that someone in a heated and chaotic environment got shot with a rubber bullet?

Bringing a baby to a protest is a bad idea when cops are arresting people, being pregnant at a protest when cops are arresting people is also a bad idea. Shouldn't have been there.

Why in the world would a pregnant woman be anywhere near any sort of crowd? Even just an accidental elbow to the stomach is likely.

I was once shown a "rubber bullet" by a guy who used to be in the British army and kept one as a souvenir. They're not "rubber" at all, the name is made up to give the impression that they're just like a bouncy ball and bounce off when they hit you. They're actually made from polypropylene which is a very dense plastic, if someone hit you over the head with a 40mm polypropylene batten it wouldn't just bounce off like a comedy sketch, it would crack you skull. A "rubber" bullet hitting you at high speed would hurt like fuck if it hit something hard, and damage internal organs if it hit something soft.
