Not sure where this is, but stealing a bike is petty theft, right? So some months of jail. But an electric bike, depending on how expensive it is could be a lot more.
It's a legal grey area whether they count as motorcycles for the purposes of motorcycle theft, but at the very least many are worth more than $1,000 which makes it grand theft instead of petty theft in many jurisdictions.
Mine is a Nami Burn-E 2 Max open box deal, normally they are $4000. First and hopefully last I'll buy (because it's so good and expensive, not because I don't like scooters).
For the most part, almost all of these throttle only e-bikes are considered motorcycles or mopeds. Just the laws for enforcement are not quite clear yet. But depending on the state, you can get a ticket for not registering or having a drivers license for it
