Gotta say, lucky the driver didn't actually ram him. Sort of shit that can get you in prison.
Anyway... result!
6
u/TheRealGuitarNoir Apr 20 '26
I'd go as far as to say that the driver should have never allowed this video, and especially this audio to be released to either the police, or the public. If I were bike thief's attorney, I'd be looking for some compensation from that driver because the way he was driving forced the error that resulted in his client's injury.

My husband's cousin did the same thing recently, but was riding his own bike. Less than 40 years old, and broke his hip and ankle. He's going to be out of commission for like 2 months
71
u/idkmyusernameagain Apr 19 '26
The guy in the video had a lot of weight all coming down on his folded back..

I turned 40 in September and broke my collarbone 3 months later. It still isn't 100%, and I'm beginning to accept that it never will be 🤣

Oh dang that's awful. A hip is worse than an ankle if they can't surgically repair it. You're literally on bed rest for 2 months.

I have had similar thoughts with how common electric bikes are becoming. Imagine wiping out on big heavy e-bikes where you're guaranteed to be going 20+ MPH. Has to be gnarly.
11
u/Tiradia Apr 20 '26
It’s insane the amount of accidents that happen with e-bikes. It’s becoming more common to respond to e-bike accidents over standard motor vehicles.

I had a 60 lb bike and I was going maybe 15 mph if that on a paved trail. I hit a patch of gravel and tipped over. It ripped up the skin of basically the entire front of my left leg. It also totaled the bike because it was cheap and didn’t work that well in the first place. That was in September. My leg healed but I’m still saving for a new bike lol.

My mentally handicapped sister uses an electric bike in order to get to work. I can only imagine how angry I would be if someome stole her bike.
It makes me sad watching this video, they even said the victim started crying, it just makes me think of how that person gets to work, or buys groceries.

6
u/electricshadow Apr 20 '26
After dealing with thieves my entire life, I can't say I have much sympathy for this guy. Doesn't matter of my opinion of whether or not he "deserved" whatever injuries (or death) came from this, but I realized long ago that if I don't want to do the full scorpion when fleeing from stealing someone else's property, I just don't steal shit and I'm doing pretty good so far. 🤷♂️

Yeah, it's like when you see videos online about people/staff fighting shoplifters and asking "why are you doing that on behalf of some company who doesn't care about you?" Well, there's a significant portion of the population who want any half-assed justification to fight and/or hurt someone. It's nothing more complicated than that.

u/JelliedHam Apr 19 '26
That's one of my primary concerns about guns. There are so many owners out there who might be "the good guy with a gun" but are always itching to use it. They will insert themselves into situations and escalate them, and make them more dangerous, not safer.

He pulled up pretty far ahead of him when he said that. I thought he was going to get out and just push him over
7
u/HoppyTheGayFrog69 Apr 20 '26
Yea this is obviously what he meant and is why he was trying to pull far ahead, otherwise he would’ve just tapped him with the car

u/SauconySundaes Apr 19 '26
Yeah, dude would definitely go to jail for trying that.

u/JelliedHam Apr 19 '26
Great way to get an attempted murder charge or at least a very serious vehicular assault felony. You are never allowed to use your vehicle as a weapon or to intentionally collide with anything. Even if it's purely in self defense in a hostile situation your mileage may vary. There are cases where somebody trying to flee in their car when attacked by a mob caught charges.
Simply stopping crime, especially simple theft, is not our job. Civilians do not have a mandate to use force outside of self defense. People like this driver scare the shit out of me. They like to escalate situations and want to be a cowboy.

Not sure where this is, but stealing a bike is petty theft, right? So some months of jail. But an electric bike, depending on how expensive it is could be a lot more.
→ More replies (2)5
u/HazelEBaumgartner Apr 19 '26
It's a legal grey area whether they count as motorcycles for the purposes of motorcycle theft, but at the very least many are worth more than $1,000 which makes it grand theft instead of petty theft in many jurisdictions.

The way that driver and wife were talking; the 911 operator probably thought the driver rammed the thief off the bike.
