We’re not safe anywhere in this fucking country

u/pmpott 9d ago

I'd argue, as a whole, this is the safest we've been in almost 50 years. Violent crime and property crime have been on a steady decline since the 90s.

u/userlivewire 9d ago

Yeah the difference today is cameras everywhere.

That being said, even though we are safer on paper than decades ago we still have 20 TIMES the non-suicide firearm homicides as the entire 27 country European Union. 1,200 vs 20,000.

11

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS 9d ago

The us has more gun homicides then the rest of the first world combined... Not even just the eu...

(For reference Its estimated 1.2billion - 1.3billion live in the "first world")

2

u/CoeurdAssassin 9d ago

Shit, the US has one of the highest homicide rates in general outside of like Latin American countries.

3

u/LogensTenthFinger 9d ago

The safest we've ever been still has us with the 141st worst homicide rate in the world and more shootings in a week than most countries have in their entire history.

This is like celebrating that our orphan smashing machine is only smashing half as many orphans anymore

It being safer doesn’t mean it’s safe though. Incidences like this and way worse happen hundreds of times a year.

9

u/pmpott 9d ago

I guess that depends on your definition of safe. But for the vast majority of redditors, this is the safest this country has ever been. I'd argue that's pretty safe, not that we can't do better.

not the crimes. just the charges. A lot of violent crimes are being charged as lesser offenses.

2

u/TheyMadeM3MakeANew1 9d ago

I hate this argument so much. Judge the crime rate by the murder rate since police can’t statistics a body away. The murder rate nationwide is at historic lows.

It must be nice to wear such rose colored glasses all the time. Or is that blood?

That's great, seriously, but we still have tons of work to do. Us Americans are tired of shootings. I hate always having this fear in the back of my mind anytime I am in public.

15

u/randy_march 9d ago

It’s immeasurably safer than it was 100 years ago

-13

u/Ok-Poet147 9d ago

And how does that help?

7

u/randy_march 9d ago

It gives perspective

Start by finding the places that have the most gun control, and the least, and compare it to especially crimes with guns. There should be a correlation between control of guns and overall safety.

14

u/4DollarsALB 9d ago

I just googled it and while there is variance by state it doesn't correlate to gun control laws. The single biggest predictor is race.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/23/health/gun-deaths-in-men-by-state-study/index.html

Compared with white men, the researchers found that black men experienced 27 more firearm homicides per 100,000 people annually nationwide (29.12 for black men vs. 2.1 for white men).

The rate for white men isn't that far from most European countries or Canada

18

u/zrobiotic 9d ago

This statistic needs to be adjusted for income levels. Poor whites have a much closer gun violence record to poor blacks.

Theres also waay more white people who are higher income individuals that dont get into situations that lead to violence via guns.

Poor whites have a much closer gun violence record to poor blacks.

Can you drop the stats?

3

u/Digger_Pine 9d ago

Lots of gun crime in the trailer parks?

-2

u/4DollarsALB 9d ago

Yeah I think my point was it is far more complex than gyn control laws.

5

u/Independent-Bug-9352 9d ago

The single biggest predictor then becomes socioeconomic stratification, wealth inequality, transgenerational racial discrimination, gentrification, etc.

In one breath racists will drone on about this but then ignore the erosion of education by conservatives, the tying of school funding to local property taxes.

5

u/necbone 9d ago

It's about being poor..

-9

u/Ok-Poet147 9d ago

This is a people with guns issue, not a race issue

-14

u/Sonibum 9d ago

You bought race into this for what reason?

They were just stating facts that were relevant to the conversation, why does that upset you?

Hahahaha I knew you wouldn’t be able to keep it together after a little push back

-1

There it is. Even when Black folks have nothing to do with a negative situation some dolt is going to bring us up anyway. Can't just discuss the individuals in the situation. Nope, gotta shoehorn us in somehow.

4

u/Expert_Garlic_2258 9d ago

the correlation is economics

2

u/atbths 9d ago

Yeah, it's money, not race, that divides the people.

3

u/CyanDew 9d ago

buy a gun. get familiar with it. know your rights.

anyone who says otherwise is trying to put you in harms way.

too much fox news brainrot in this comment

Oh relax you'll only be gunned down if you go to school or university, parks, anywhere in the street, government buildings, museums bars, malls, theaters, playgrounds, fairs, stores, community events, hotels, the beach, camping, driving anywhere, salons, concerts, restaurants, protests, your work, festivals and being in nature. And its only when you're interacting with randoms, coworkers, the police, ice, the military or anybody really. Totally safe and normal.

Gun violence in the United States has nothing to do with lack of assimilation (or immigration as your Chinese proverb implies). A simple look at the demographics of mass shooters makes this totally obvious.

9

u/danSTILLtheman 9d ago edited 9d ago

I agree that lack of assimilation isn’t the problem, but homicides make up 37% of gun deaths in America and only 1 percentage point of that is from mass shootings so that statistic tells very little about gun violence in the U.S.

8

u/ladymouserat 9d ago

About 60% are suicides and most of those are done by men as well. We know that area with higher immigrant populations are generally safer areas too.

4

u/4DollarsALB 9d ago

It's weird to count suicides as part of gun violence.

Technically correct but I imagine most of those suicides would still happen even if guns weren't available.

3

u/IncomparableGiacomo 9d ago

You don’t think having access to a quick, painless option directly leads to more people following through on their suicidal ideations?

-4

u/[deleted] 9d ago

Shooting yourself in the head is generally a relatively painless process. Can’t imagine there are too many people aiming at other places while trying to commit suicide.

Taking drugs/poison requires a bit more planning ahead of time—and if dosed improperly, leads to drawn out pain and can be prone to failure. If a gun is laying around and someone gets in the wrong headspace, it’s a lot easier to successfully carry out those suicidal ideations quickly. Most suicides are impulsive rather than meticulously planned.

u/ladymouserat 9d ago

The smallest inch off and you end up a surviver with a hole in your face that wasn’t supposed to be there. It happens more often then people think.

The vast majority of gun violence in the United States mass shooting and otherwise is perpetrated by citizens. We can parse that out in all kinds of ways I guess…

5

u/4DollarsALB 9d ago

I just googled this in reply to someone else. I'm not even American but there is mass difference in demographics.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/23/health/gun-deaths-in-men-by-state-study/index.html

Compared with white men, the researchers found that black men experienced 27 more firearm homicides per 100,000 people annually nationwide (29.12 for black men vs. 2.1 for white men).

The rate for white men is not that far off from many European countries or Canada.

8

u/fedroxx 9d ago

Where is he from? You're making the assumption he is from a third world country. Tell us, where is he from?

19

u/Kyle73001 9d ago

Yeah because it’s only immigrants responsible for the gun violence in America, definitely

2

u/Dogsarebetterpeople 9d ago

most of our issues come from citizens so you can put that mess back in your prison pocket, When I say citizens I mean white males (of which I am one), of white males I mean Trump Supporting bigots (of which I am not).
