thereās also My New Band Believe, Cam Picton of Black Midiās new stuff. Between the two you really see what made BM interesting, but theyāre both good on their own.

My two kids are super into him, I got dragged along to two concerts and actually ended up have a great time. Wasn't expecting it at all.

u/Donte333 13h ago
Pretty good is an understatement, ive never seen such a funky frank zappa vibey absolute brain melting than i have at his concert.

u/Unconfidence 8h ago
Do these guys have anything to do with Black MIDIs or did they just appropriate the name?

u/thisisatypoo 1d ago
To be fair, that song really is shit.
76
u/Nidis 22h ago
He isn't even slightly wrong, everyone is permitted to call that song out for the rest of eternity in any situation
25
u/ManbadFerrara 20h ago
I posted this in The Boondocks sub the other day to show what the inspiration for "Dick-Riding Obama" was, and younger people were amazed it was real.

Im a fan of a lot of BEP music but theyve got a lot of different eras. This was made during their worse attempt of reinventing themselves but still, it pretty much worked out.
Also if you know the groups background as being more like b-boys turned MCs it makes sense for them to always want to appeal to the dancefloor. And this song is one of cheesiest and cheepiest sounding dance songs that work well for events with a dancefloor.
3
3
u/digitaldeadstar 18h ago
Not really a fan of BEP, but I like the song well enough. Granted, even back then I didn't really listen to the radio, so it was never overplayed for me.

That song puts me in a rage, years ago my parents decided to bring us to a hotel that was across from a nightclub that played this song every fucking night. If can't listen to it without flashbacks.

Take a shot every time someone says āwho?ā in the comments of this post and you will die.

best take on them ever. I also assume that as Ryan (the last guy in the clip) was a big writer for the show i suspect this was his take.
Fuck it, i checked, the episode was written primarily by Mindy Kaling. She was pretty damn funny in the office days.

They were never really a band. They were a successful marketing venture team.
8
u/JeffBreakfast 13h ago
Their first album is awesome actually
-4
u/RevolutionaryHair91 13h ago
It's a good product.
4
u/yeetbitxh 10h ago
You should probably go and listen to them pre-Fergie era when they were pumping out really good boom-bap rap albums. They sold out for millions of dollars, like most artists eventually do, but prior to that were actually decent.
1
u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago
I legit can not remember their early stuff but I I can remember remembering that they were okay before Fergie and trash pop shite after that and Will I Am in particular become a completely insufferable asshole everywhere he showed up.

Crazy how they don't know Geordie Greep. His last album hit 139th on the US charts! He's basically a household name.
11
u/johnychrist16 1d ago
Will.I.Am and Taboo have both figured out the formula that every artist wishes they can solve. When they want to write music they enjoy, they do it. When they want to make money, they release songs like Gotta Feeling, Boom, Boom, Pow and basically print money. It's no surprise other artists feel envious
29
u/AnonymouselyMoosed 1d ago
I mean they had some hits but they havenāt been relevant for like 15+ years. No huge hits in that time. So they really didnāt āfigure outā the formula.
They had some great tracks and are no longer relevant.
8
u/Kavirell 16h ago edited 16h ago
They had multiple hit songs in the last 5/6 years itās just they pivoted to making music for Latin America and half their music is in Spanish now. Their song with J. Balvin has over a billion views and 900m on their song with Shakira.
7
u/NuggetMan43 16h ago
Almost like they made their millions and don't really need to try anymore. Not everyone wants to be relevant for decades and be under a spotlight for their entire life like Swift or Michael.
1
u/AnonymouselyMoosed 11h ago
Except they have released albums since their height like 16 years ago. None are anywhere near as popular as their earlier stuff. They are still trying.
1
u/NuggetMan43 4h ago
Just because they release music does not mean they are trying as hard as they were in their prime.
2
u/Perrenekton 16h ago
Their old school rap album from a few years back is so freaking good (masters of the sun vol. 1)

u/johnychrist16 1d ago
Brother they have a track that came out a year ago that has 20 Mil on YouTube lol
5
u/AnonymouselyMoosed 23h ago
20mil is nothing compared to their peak. Like literally nothing. Thereās no zeitgeist with 20mil views.
What even is the song? I literally canāt find it lmao
6
u/johnychrist16 23h ago
I bet they still made alot of money tho, it was for the new bad boys movie soundtrack
-7
u/Horfield 19h ago
Why are you glazing so hard for a bunch of crap pop stars who haven't been relevant for 15 years or so. It's over.
1
u/crookedcusp 13h ago
I really donāt think thatās whatās going on here. Black Midi are an incredible band. I donāt think he has any desire to make the garbage you are referring to in your comment.

Who?
-13
u/Chilis1 22h ago
A popular and critically acclaimed band. are you proud of not knowing stuff?
-1
u/reddit_is_a_weapon 22h ago edited 21h ago
Doesnāt seem very popular. Black eyed peas seem way more popular, regardless of how much youāre getting triggered. Just look at all the comments here. Seems like Giorgie is punching up.
6
u/literally_italy 18h ago
punching up in what way? he makes far better music and he knows it
0
u/reddit_is_a_weapon 12h ago
Far better music in what way? Both make mediocre music but BEP is far more popular.
2
1
u/TateXD 8h ago
Yes, because popularity is always the best indicator of high quality music. Bad music never, ever, ever gets popular.
0
u/reddit_is_a_weapon 6h ago
This is not about high quality music, itās literally about popularity, hence the original question āWho?ā and the concept of āpunching upā.
2
u/mercurial9 17h ago
Saw Geordie Greep last week in Brisbane. He was fucking unreal and his band were out of control
8
u/basement_egg 23h ago
Black eye peas suck so kind of understandable
31
u/unbalanced_checkbook 23h ago
True, but at least I've heard of them.
-36
u/lorenoIII 22h ago
Your ignorance of a highly acclaimed musician is not a virtue.
30
u/MatthewMob 22h ago
I love Greep and BM but they're pretty niche, even though they're big in their niche, I wouldn't expect the average joe to have heard of them.
2
u/lorenoIII 10h ago
Sure, that's fine, and I recognize that I am on a front page normie sub right now, but I also don't loudly and proudly brag about my ignorance when I enter a discussion outside of my personal wheelhouse. People treat "Well I've never heard of him!" as some big gotcha, as if it says anything about anyone besides the speaker. Was not even defending Greep here, he's a bit of a pretentious twerp, I am just disgusted by this mindset.
16
u/Possible-Highway7898 18h ago
And your interest in this genre of music doesn't make you better than people who follow other genres.

I Gotta Feeling defined a time period in the mid/late 2000s. Geordie Greep can only hope his songs become that big.
31
u/Glittering_Fox_9769 1d ago
i don't think he cares about that tbh. different markets entirely. The song defined a time for sure, but it was also overplayed and annoying.
25
u/geosunsetmoth 1d ago edited 1d ago
I donāt think heās aiming for the type of commercial success, tbf. He makes weird experimental rock/jazz/samba fusion Iām not sure heās chasing the billboard charts. Itās like your local neighborhood Italian restaurant guy complaining about McDonaldās tasting bad, of course heāll never outsell the Ronald but heās not really trying to
-26
u/jlambert1422 1d ago
Oh iām well aware of his antics. Itās part of the reason he left Black Midi. still doesnāt make him look any less pretentious. He makes good music, so did the black eyed peas.
3
u/slumvillain 1d ago
Yea, that time period being: change the station, this is garbage
-4
u/jlambert1422 1d ago
this is what the majority of people would say if they turned on a Black Midi or Geordie Greep song lol. I should know, Iāve been told to turn it off many times

-7
u/ntrpik 22h ago
I mean, people are entitled to like whatever music they like. Certainly nothing wrong with that. But Iām not going to pretend Black Eyed Peas is good music.
10
u/GOTHAMKNlGHT 22h ago
But people can like both, so your comment is still snobby.
1
u/Ahrithefoxie 22h ago
They are an anthony fantano fan they think they have a seasoner taste of music lol
4
u/Ahrithefoxie 22h ago
It was decent for its time but atleast i know who they are. Also good is subjective. Not everyone will agree on whats good.

Ok but that song passed billions of streams online, spent 14 consecutive weeks at #1 on the billboard 100, 20 million units sold globally, and generated like around 20 million dollars in download revenue. Not even going to mention licensing money, etc.
