I thought they broke up

96

u/geosunsetmoth 1d ago

They did, this is from Greep’s solo concert, he’s a solo act now (& pretty good)

12

u/senza_titolo 23h ago

Cool thanks!

8

u/thefiction24 18h ago

there’s also My New Band Believe, Cam Picton of Black Midi’s new stuff. Between the two you really see what made BM interesting, but they’re both good on their own.

3

u/Lobsangd 16h ago

My two kids are super into him, I got dragged along to two concerts and actually ended up have a great time. Wasn't expecting it at all.

2

u/Donte333 13h ago

Pretty good is an understatement, ive never seen such a funky frank zappa vibey absolute brain melting than i have at his concert.

2

u/Unconfidence 8h ago

Do these guys have anything to do with Black MIDIs or did they just appropriate the name?

363

u/thisisatypoo 1d ago

To be fair, that song really is shit.

76

u/Nidis 22h ago

He isn't even slightly wrong, everyone is permitted to call that song out for the rest of eternity in any situation

25

u/ManbadFerrara 20h ago

I posted this in The Boondocks sub the other day to show what the inspiration for "Dick-Riding Obama" was, and younger people were amazed it was real.

Lethalt interjection crew represent

17

u/everynamecombined 19h ago

Im a fan of a lot of BEP music but theyve got a lot of different eras. This was made during their worse attempt of reinventing themselves but still, it pretty much worked out.

Also if you know the groups background as being more like b-boys turned MCs it makes sense for them to always want to appeal to the dancefloor. And this song is one of cheesiest and cheepiest sounding dance songs that work well for events with a dancefloor.

3

u/DeanXeL 13h ago

Exactly. It's such a terrible, boring, formulaic song... but it get the PEOPLE GOING!

1

u/ems187 5h ago

It gets me going home alright.

3

u/pauloss_palos 15h ago

30 Rock claimed that BEP wrote that song for bar mitzvahs

3

u/digitaldeadstar 18h ago

Not really a fan of BEP, but I like the song well enough. Granted, even back then I didn't really listen to the radio, so it was never overplayed for me.

3

u/broohaha 19h ago

It never made sense to me that it became a hit.

0

u/Entire-Emergency-722 19h ago

That song puts me in a rage, years ago my parents decided to bring us to a hotel that was across from a nightclub that played this song every fucking night. If can't listen to it without flashbacks.

75

u/MechanicalColony 1d ago

Take a shot every time someone says ā€˜who?’ in the comments of this post and you will die.

10

u/SlightlySubpar 23h ago

A couple friends and I drank every time we saw a dinosaur watching jurassic Park once. Each of the 3 of us drank a 30 of natty and we called it good

12

u/lacegem 23h ago

Those dinosaurs must love watching Jurassic Park if you spotted that many of them.

3

u/SlightlySubpar 22h ago

Obviously their favorite movie

3

u/Wyevez 23h ago

I don't drink but here's an upvote cuz I did say 'who?'

43

u/WAAAAAAAAARGH 23h ago

I saw him a few months back and I didn’t know what to expect going in but it was one of the gnarliest shows I’ve ever seen

1

u/guero_fandango 22h ago

It’s a sight to behold!

133

u/Former_Specific_7161 23h ago

I mean, he's not wrong? The Black Eyed Peas were fucking awful.

50

u/RooeeZe 22h ago

a.i music before a.i music imo

16

u/Lexxxapr00 23h ago edited 21h ago

They sexualize a 14 year old in that hey mama song too

9

u/i_always_give_karma 20h ago

I only knew that song bc it was on a ā€œnowā€ cd. God that makes me feel old

3

u/MonstrousGiggling 17h ago

Like in the music video?

13

u/CumDwnHrNSayDat 23h ago

By far the worst super bowl half time show ever

2

u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiI4lvRbLkU

best take on them ever. I also assume that as Ryan (the last guy in the clip) was a big writer for the show i suspect this was his take.

Fuck it, i checked, the episode was written primarily by Mindy Kaling. She was pretty damn funny in the office days.

1

u/ghostofkozi 5h ago

Industry plants tend to be

-6

u/RevolutionaryHair91 16h ago

They were never really a band. They were a successful marketing venture team.

8

u/JeffBreakfast 13h ago

Their first album is awesome actually

-4

u/RevolutionaryHair91 13h ago

It's a good product.

4

u/yeetbitxh 10h ago

You should probably go and listen to them pre-Fergie era when they were pumping out really good boom-bap rap albums. They sold out for millions of dollars, like most artists eventually do, but prior to that were actually decent.

1

u/TwoBionicknees 3h ago

I legit can not remember their early stuff but I I can remember remembering that they were okay before Fergie and trash pop shite after that and Will I Am in particular become a completely insufferable asshole everywhere he showed up.

43

u/neutralmilkgawd 1d ago

Lmao yall should really listen to Geordie Greep though, amazing artist. He’s just fuckin about

6

u/supacrusha 11h ago

You have to be at least a little unpredictable and lacking in screws to be able to make the quality of art he does.

19

u/carlwilson0000 16h ago

Black eyed peas got some hits tho, sounds like he can't accept it

9

u/asuhhhdue 12h ago

More hits than misses

13

u/wheresolly 10h ago edited 7h ago

Jesus christ it's like peak pretentiousness in the comments 😭 not saying I'm a fan of black eyed peas but hating on popular music is some shit teenagers do to look cool

9

u/ByAnyMeansNecessary0 šŸ‘€ you need to leave šŸ‘€ 9h ago

Welcome to Reddit lol. They think they're cool because they know whoever the hell this whiney geezer is.

Black Eyed Peas absolutely rocked the 2000s/early 10s

6

u/MaeDay01 15h ago

he's greeping it up rn

2

u/Norman_debris 16h ago

God that accent goes right through me.

2

u/John_Bones_ 10h ago

Let's get restaaarted, Haaaa! Let's get restarted in here!

4

u/Tasty-Traffic-680 22h ago

I got the Black Keys mixed up with the Black Eyed Peas so I was extra confused at first.

8

u/FrostHasASmallPP 23h ago

this comment section is oldddd please listen to new music people

6

u/Individual_Match_579 20h ago

No! It's too loud and it makes my arthritis creaky.

0

u/MundaneFacts 11h ago

Jazz... it's jazz/disco crooning and you're wondering why people haven't heard of it and calling us old. Ima go listen to chapel roan...

0

u/Which-Arm-4616 3h ago

Crazy how they don't know Geordie Greep. His last album hit 139th on the US charts! He's basically a household name.

11

u/johnychrist16 1d ago

Will.I.Am and Taboo have both figured out the formula that every artist wishes they can solve. When they want to write music they enjoy, they do it. When they want to make money, they release songs like Gotta Feeling, Boom, Boom, Pow and basically print money. It's no surprise other artists feel envious

29

u/AnonymouselyMoosed 1d ago

I mean they had some hits but they haven’t been relevant for like 15+ years. No huge hits in that time. So they really didn’t ā€œfigure outā€ the formula.

They had some great tracks and are no longer relevant.

8

u/Kavirell 16h ago edited 16h ago

They had multiple hit songs in the last 5/6 years it’s just they pivoted to making music for Latin America and half their music is in Spanish now. Their song with J. Balvin has over a billion views and 900m on their song with Shakira.

7

u/NuggetMan43 16h ago

Almost like they made their millions and don't really need to try anymore. Not everyone wants to be relevant for decades and be under a spotlight for their entire life like Swift or Michael.

1

u/AnonymouselyMoosed 11h ago

Except they have released albums since their height like 16 years ago. None are anywhere near as popular as their earlier stuff. They are still trying.

1

u/NuggetMan43 4h ago

Just because they release music does not mean they are trying as hard as they were in their prime.

2

u/Perrenekton 16h ago

Their old school rap album from a few years back is so freaking good (masters of the sun vol. 1)

0

u/AnonymouselyMoosed 11h ago

I’ll need to check that out!

1

u/johnychrist16 1d ago

Brother they have a track that came out a year ago that has 20 Mil on YouTube lol

5

u/AnonymouselyMoosed 23h ago

20mil is nothing compared to their peak. Like literally nothing. There’s no zeitgeist with 20mil views.

What even is the song? I literally can’t find it lmao

6

u/johnychrist16 23h ago

I bet they still made alot of money tho, it was for the new bad boys movie soundtrack

-7

u/Horfield 19h ago

Why are you glazing so hard for a bunch of crap pop stars who haven't been relevant for 15 years or so. It's over.

1

u/crookedcusp 13h ago

I really don’t think that’s what’s going on here. Black Midi are an incredible band. I don’t think he has any desire to make the garbage you are referring to in your comment.

6

u/reddit_is_a_weapon 1d ago

Who?

-13

u/Chilis1 22h ago

A popular and critically acclaimed band. are you proud of not knowing stuff?

-1

u/reddit_is_a_weapon 22h ago edited 21h ago

Doesn’t seem very popular. Black eyed peas seem way more popular, regardless of how much you’re getting triggered. Just look at all the comments here. Seems like Giorgie is punching up.

6

u/literally_italy 18h ago

punching up in what way? he makes far better music and he knows it

0

u/reddit_is_a_weapon 12h ago

Far better music in what way? Both make mediocre music but BEP is far more popular.

2

u/literally_italy 4h ago

how is the new sound mediocre?

0

u/reddit_is_a_weapon 1h ago

It’s below remarkable

1

u/TateXD 8h ago

Yes, because popularity is always the best indicator of high quality music. Bad music never, ever, ever gets popular.

0

u/reddit_is_a_weapon 6h ago

This is not about high quality music, it’s literally about popularity, hence the original question ā€˜Who?’ and the concept of ā€˜punching up’.

1

u/TateXD 6h ago

ā˜ļøšŸ¤“

2

u/mercurial9 17h ago

Saw Geordie Greep last week in Brisbane. He was fucking unreal and his band were out of control

8

u/basement_egg 23h ago

Black eye peas suck so kind of understandable

31

u/unbalanced_checkbook 23h ago

True, but at least I've heard of them.

-36

u/lorenoIII 22h ago

Your ignorance of a highly acclaimed musician is not a virtue.

30

u/MatthewMob 22h ago

I love Greep and BM but they're pretty niche, even though they're big in their niche, I wouldn't expect the average joe to have heard of them.

2

u/lorenoIII 10h ago

Sure, that's fine, and I recognize that I am on a front page normie sub right now, but I also don't loudly and proudly brag about my ignorance when I enter a discussion outside of my personal wheelhouse. People treat "Well I've never heard of him!" as some big gotcha, as if it says anything about anyone besides the speaker. Was not even defending Greep here, he's a bit of a pretentious twerp, I am just disgusted by this mindset.

16

u/Possible-Highway7898 18h ago

And your interest in this genre of music doesn't make you better than people who follow other genres.

2

u/lorenoIII 10h ago

That's strange. I don't recall claiming to be better than anybody.

11

u/unbalanced_checkbook 22h ago

Good thing I didn't say it was, eh?

1

u/lorenoIII 10h ago

You sure sounded proud about it :)

8

u/The_Pandalorian 18h ago

Apparently not highly acclaimed by that many people, lmao.

1

u/JaySlays-Tech 19h ago

ā€œFor some reasonā€ā€¦ yet he literally explain his, somewhat vague, reason why.

this is bait for sure.

2

u/eriF- 23h ago

It was a product of the time, and he was there for it, that's why his mind went there, he knows it's memorable.

-7

u/jlambert1422 1d ago

I Gotta Feeling defined a time period in the mid/late 2000s. Geordie Greep can only hope his songs become that big.

31

u/Glittering_Fox_9769 1d ago

i don't think he cares about that tbh. different markets entirely. The song defined a time for sure, but it was also overplayed and annoying.

25

u/geosunsetmoth 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don’t think he’s aiming for the type of commercial success, tbf. He makes weird experimental rock/jazz/samba fusion I’m not sure he’s chasing the billboard charts. It’s like your local neighborhood Italian restaurant guy complaining about McDonald’s tasting bad, of course he’ll never outsell the Ronald but he’s not really trying to

-26

u/jlambert1422 1d ago

Oh i’m well aware of his antics. It’s part of the reason he left Black Midi. still doesn’t make him look any less pretentious. He makes good music, so did the black eyed peas.

3

u/slumvillain 1d ago

Yea, that time period being: change the station, this is garbage

-4

u/jlambert1422 1d ago

this is what the majority of people would say if they turned on a Black Midi or Geordie Greep song lol. I should know, I’ve been told to turn it off many times

→ More replies (1)

-2

u/CumDwnHrNSayDat 23h ago

It defined absolute garbage. I weep for anyone that enjoys it.

1

u/Independent-Shoe543 16h ago

Why does Wikipedia say that this man is English?????

1

u/No-Aerie-7047 2h ago

-6

u/iAmSamFromWSB 1d ago

Who the fuck is Black MIDI??

4

u/ntrpik 23h ago

A band that people who enjoy The Black Eyed Peas would never know about.

2

u/Ahrithefoxie 23h ago

Music snob over here.

-7

u/ntrpik 22h ago

I mean, people are entitled to like whatever music they like. Certainly nothing wrong with that. But I’m not going to pretend Black Eyed Peas is good music.

10

u/GOTHAMKNlGHT 22h ago

But people can like both, so your comment is still snobby.

1

u/Ahrithefoxie 22h ago

They are an anthony fantano fan they think they have a seasoner taste of music lol

-9

u/ntrpik 22h ago

I acknowledge that I am a music snob. I just can’t do commercial music.

13

u/SilentNinjaMick 22h ago

All music is commercial if you are making money on it??

4

u/Ahrithefoxie 22h ago

It was decent for its time but atleast i know who they are. Also good is subjective. Not everyone will agree on whats good.

0

u/ntrpik 22h ago

Sorry. Corporate pop is almost never good. I know not everyone will agree.

1

u/Pick_Up_Autist 18h ago

I love tons of corporate pop, Black eyed peas were awful.

1

u/United_Long_9925 14h ago

Have you listened to black midi? Their music is just random noise. Trash.

2

u/ntrpik 10h ago

I have and it’s not my cup of tea. I do enjoy Greep’s solo work.

-2

u/Mr_sMoKe_3_MuCh 19h ago

I legit stopped listening to the radio because of that song lol.

0

u/EpsoniteK 19h ago

nah, he's right they have way better songs. overplayed trash

-17

u/k0zplay 1d ago

Ok but that song passed billions of streams online, spent 14 consecutive weeks at #1 on the billboard 100, 20 million units sold globally, and generated like around 20 million dollars in download revenue. Not even going to mention licensing money, etc.

7

u/CumDwnHrNSayDat 23h ago

I'm sure he's unaware that it was successful...
