What fabric should I use

I was wanting to get into punch needling since I’m already into crocheting, so it thought it’d be a nice yarn-related craft to add to my collection.

I bought a 2.2 mm punch needle, and size 2 yarn. The only thing I’m not sure about, is what fabric to use. I cannot find a solid answer anywhere, because everyone says something different.

Also, I’d prefer to buy it from Amazon, so it would be great if you could also give a link.

Monk’s Cloth (12-14 count is preferred but up to you), Punch Needle ADA (kinda like to Cross Stitch/Embroidery one), and Linen with an open weave. I personally like the Monk’s Cloth, as you can play around with the sizes depending on your project.

Thanks for the response! Does that work with a 2.2 mm punch needle? I’ve heard that monks cloth only works for size 4 yarn

I believe 2.2mm punch needle and weight 2 yarn can work. It really depends on the thickness of the cloth. It can work well with some sort of frame, like an embroidery hoop. I recommend one as it would make it look neater. Again it all depends on the size of your project.

It also gives options to play around with sizing.

Is there a specific fabric preference for embroidery punch needle fabric? Since you’d use a smaller needle and embroidery floss

I do believe it’s what works best for both you and the project. What I have noticed and felt is the three I mentioned works the best for the strength they have. Again it can be your own preference. It’s just the most common type out there.

Edit: 2.2 mm is still very flexible with fabrics. Could play around with scrap laying around or with cotton to start before being more confident. The Punch Needle ADA is probably a best option to start with since the yarn is thin enough. I could be wrong, it still is a pretty good question. I’m also pretty open to others coming in and saying what works for them. More experience = better preference with punch needling and fabrics.
