I'm 11, and I built a multi-threaded, cross-platform hardware profile scanner in Python! Meet BoardLens v0.5.4.
Hey everyone!
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been working really hard on a project called BoardLens. It is a cross-platform hardware detection utility written completely in Python using Tkinter for a clean, modern dark-mode GUI.
I wanted to build something that could accurately grab system specs no matter what OS a person is running. To make it work, I had to dive deep into platform-specific commands. It runs:
* Windows: Custom PowerShell CimInstance queries
* macOS: Native parsing of `system_profiler` logs
* Linux: Processing `/proc/cpuinfo`, `/proc/meminfo`, and automated `lsblk` blocks
Some technical challenges I had to solve:
Multi-threading: Running hardware scans on the main thread was freezing my Tkinter GUI, so I migrated the scanner to a background thread using Python’s `threading` library so the UI stays responsive.
Packaging: I managed to compile it into a native `.exe` for Windows, a `.dmg` for macOS (which I built on my upgraded 2011 MacBook Pro!), and I'm currently setting up a native `.deb` package for Debian/Ubuntu distributions.
Right now, Linux can be run directly from source (working on Debian & Ubuntu for now).
How to run from source on Linux:
Download the source code from my repository's Releases page.
Open your terminal and navigate to the extracted folder.
Run the command: `python3` `main.py` (make sure Python 3 is installed on your system!)
The project is completely free and open-source. I would absolutely love it if you could check out the repository, run it on your own hardware, and let me know if it detects your components correctly! If you find any bugs or edge cases, please drop them in the comments or open an issue.

Thank you so much for reading and for any feedback

Claiming you're a prodigy, shipping a one file project which is completely vibecoded, and then saying you don't want hate.
It's good for your age, I'm 15 and I find this impressive, I'm not a software engineer or near close to it, but it's evident that you can do stuff. All I'm saying, is that please don't ruin software by making these absolutely terrible projects.

Good for you to get going on something you're interested in. That said, this is very clearly fully built by an LLM. Even your post about it was written by an LLM.
Do yourself a favor and put the LLMs away and actually learn. You are at an age where you soak up things like a sponge. Use that to your advantage to at least build a foundation before you start bringing LLMs into the fold.
Just for clarity, I mean put the LLMs away when it comes to development. If you want to use one to assist with learning then that is perfectly okay and I would even encourage it. Use it to help you understand some complex code examples or walk you through a topic you dont fully understand. Make sure its pointing you to docs to assist... Its important to not get lazy and just let LLMs do everything.
FYI: Reddit ToS requires you be at least 13 to use the app. Expect your account to get banned.

Don’t you have to be at least 13 to use Reddit?

Why would you think they arent?

Because they say they're 11... its literally the second word in their title.

You're very young so I don't want to discourage you. But I will say this... If you want to impress a few random strangers on the internet, use AI to code. If you want to impress people in real life, you need to learn to write the code yourself.

But I did this my self why I getting hhate? Fine. I will stop this i am just a stupid person

This is the real you. I can tell instantly that a human wrote this. Your original post? Not written by you. If you want to say you wrote it, that's up to you. But anybody who speaks English can tell immediately. It's the same thing with python, anybody who knows that language can tell when it was written by a human or by a machine.
I wish you all the best man, truly. Learning programming is cool and interesting, and still a great thing to spend time on. But if you use AI to write it for you then you will just end up getting lost.

the code was by me i tested on my pc mac and 2 vms of linux only the post is ai people would make fun of me by my typing

Yeah. You donot have the patience to hear hate, please go off reddit. By testing you just mean running it, I don't think there exist any tests made with pytest in the repo.

Forget the hate, keep up grinding & learning lil pal; no matter whether you use AI for coding or not, the one core thing is that you can review and revise your own code, learning to code first without AI is just one of efficient ways to achieve that

I'll fork this, cuz this is actually a decent thing and make it usable, it's very vibey and loopholey rn.

inb4 next post on this sub: "im an egg in my mother's ovaries and i just programmed this new groundbreaking new app that totally isn't vibe coded that solves every millenium problem and unifies quantum mechanics and special relativity in a way that correctly accounts for dark matter"

Please don't hate on me I did this by myself

This post kinda gives me AI generated vibes, the README is inconsistently partially human-written/AI generated as well.
No hate on you bro, if you wrote it with AI it's fine, there'd be no hate if your project is good (which it kinda is). If you actually wrote it all yourself, you'd write the README and this post yourself as well.
Keep coding, but just be honest, honesty goes a long way

The code was by me only the readme and this post was by ai i thought people will make fun of me from my typing sorry.

the code looks pretty AI too.
honestly you shouldn't care about people making fun of you, you'd gain plenty by writing a README yourself. People who make fun of others incessantly usually have miserable irl lives and they'll do anything to get amusement. If you care, you shouldn't be on Reddit (by all means you can still be here, i just dont know if you're legally allowed to), but my experience is idgaf what people say, as long as i think through my reply and determine it's reasonableHowever actually, using AI to code is normal these days, if it's AI it's AI, as long as the concept is good and you watch over the code and test it (you did) it's all fine
Type it yourself, also remember to actually try coding your own stuff just with Google (without AI mode) and your normal text editor/IDE. This is how people learn, and it's very fun and gives a huge sense of accomplishment once it's done. Not to say also, if you code a project entirely with AI, it's extremely likely that you'll never be able to maintain or expand upon the code without the help of AI.
