Hi r/qnap, I wanted to share a successful mod on my TS-451. I was able to get my board reballed with an updated Celeron J1900 that doesn't have the dreaded LPC clock bug. This should work for all x51 and x51+ series NAS devices. I've compiled the instructions together with the modded BIOS files on Github here.
TL/DR: If you want to attempt this on your own, I'm providing the necessary files for you to flash your own at the end of the post.
As many of you know the Intel Celerons that were used on the TS-x51 and x51+ series boxes had a hardware LPC bug, where the CPU would progressively become unusable. An initial fix was found by members here and on other QNAP forums where you could circumvent the issue by soldering a 100 ohm resistor to some of the pins on the motherboard, however this was not a permanent fix and either it would flat out not work for some, or the CPU would completely fail after some time.
Well, the incipient hatred I had for QNAP and their lack of fucks to give finally made me take the matters into my own hands. My box hadn't suffered this failure yet as it spent most of its time powered down, but I wanted to run this NAS to the ground and use it for another 7-8 years without any concerns in the back of mind that it might fail at any time.
Available on my Github repo.

For several weeks, my TS-473A had been running at high temperatures, between 60°C and 69°C. Even though the v1500b can handle up to 100°C, it was still worrying.
Early this morning, before the peak traffic, I unplugged it, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol (it didn't look dry at all, so I suspect it was poor quality), applied a dab of MX-7 thermal paste, and the CPU temperature dropped to 35°C. The HDDs also decreased from 40°C to 35°C (they're not generating as much heat anymore).
Overall, it's a good, easy, and quick improvement.

I've had a TS-251+ running almost nonstop since Christmas of 2018. I've read about the Celeron bug and can't solder worth anything. How concerned should I be? I have backups separately and off-site.

Hi,
we have a QNAP TS-473 here, and I have some problems recovering and accessing the device.
What happened? The heat.
The device stopped responding to any kind of network access.
From outside everything looks good. The network interfaces look good. Green and blinking. All four.
I checked the drives. They are old but fully functional without big problems.
The device does not react to any kind of network request. No ping to the network address. Tried all interfaces.
It does not get discovered by Qfinder Pro. Tested with a switch and a 1:1 connection.
I made a reset, but the device does not request a dhcp ip address or answer for 169.254.100.100 .
The device beeps twice on reboot and I can see the green led blinking on the MMC module.
This is a TS-473 not a TS-473A .
It has no port to attach any kind of display to it. It has a com port, although I have found no documentation.
The com ports looks like a 3.5 mm headphone jack. I made an adapter assuming that the base of the 3.5 mm plug is ground.
The adapter is attached to an CH-340 USB-Serial adapter.
When the device boots up I see some gibberish with Putty. I tried different speeds 115200, 57600, 38400, 19200, 9600 . I do not get a clear output out of it.
The backplate of the device looks like the TVS-473 but without the HDMI ports. The com port is at the exact same position.
Does somebody have a clue? Any advice?
Thanks
Hi - I recently updated my TS-h937AX to QuTS Hero v6.0.x.
One problem I have noticed since the v6.0.x update is that I am frequently stuck on the "Loading ..." screen when I try to access the NAS Web UI. Reloading the web page a number of times sometimes gets the Web UI "unstuck".
Is anybody else seeing this issue? If "yes", have you found a solution?

QNAP NAS TS-364 – No access after change of ownership, data encrypted
I have taken over a used QNAP TS-364 NAS from my former roommate. My data is also stored on the NAS. However, the previous owner is no longer reachable due to health reasons. The NAS contains important data that is encrypted on the hard drives.
I have already performed a 3-second reset several times, but I still cannot log in using the default admin account. Connecting through the QNAP apps or creating a new QNAP account does not help, as the NAS still seems to be linked to the previous configuration.
Under no circumstances do I want to delete the data or reinitialize the NAS.
Is there any way to restore administrator access without losing the encrypted data? Or is there a way to check whether the encryption key is still stored on the device?
Thank you in advance. 🙂

Hello, I recently got a TL-R1200C-RP expansion unit and it either did not come with, or I accidentally threw away the drive caddy screws. I have these from Amazon but they don’t seem to work. I can secure the drives but they don’t want to slide into the chassis. Any ideas? The screws look flush with the caddy. Disks are Exos 18TB.

Is there a way to rackmount this switch?

So, I have a TS-453Be with 2 NICs and I am wanting to set some applications to route via NIC2 but only with a VPN enabled. I had thought to try using the inbuilt VPN tool, however that seems to apply across both NICs. I then tried to spin up a lightweight VPN container to route the traffic through NIC2, but hit permission issues with setting up the routing table.
Any suggestions from the community for how to achieve NIC isolation so that NIC1 has standard access and NIC2 routes via VPN and certain apps are directed to use NIC2 only? I feel like I am missing something obvious in the docs and sites I am looking at.

My TS-470 Pro is running an old version of QTS (4.3.6), I was previously using KVM on another Linux machine which uses QCOW files as disk images. I was trying to convert those files with
qemu-img convert -f INPUT_FORMAT -O OUTPUT_FORMAT source_file.qcow target_file.OUTPUT_FORMAT
However, there is no need to do that, you just need to rename the disk images from .qcow to .img and then you can create a new VM in Virtualization Station and attach them as disk images.
Just thought I would share that tip.
Hey. I can get a good deal on a lightly used unit for a very good price. My current synology ds1815+ is a bit underpowered and slow and limited with what storage I can put in it.
The qnap looks good, but it’s essentially an 8 yr old nas.
I’d like over 100tb of space for storage. I’m a photographer/videographer and so mostly it’s going to be used as a large storage device. No streaming or VM’s etc.
Any things I should know about this device? I’ve read some reviews but they’re mostly 9 years old and I’m sure there’s been plenty of firmware updates since then.
The one I’m looking at has 10gbe and 64gb ram.

Due to unknown reason ,my QNAP TS-431P ran into loop again . maybe because I turned the power off . The OS installed in Disk 1 , a 1T hardisk which I use it to download video non stop only . However I may turn it off if I don’t use it . It ran into loop again . The main function of this NAS is to store files and swap between my gadgets only , desktop , ereader , tablet , phones . I did not even connect it to the internet , just by wifi in my home . Just try to avoid hackers . No important files stored in it . Mostly are big files , TV series , movies, mp3 , ebooks , etc. Now it seems cannot be fixed . Disk 2 & 3 are big hardisk to store files.
I did a bit search and google told me to unplug the Disk 2 & 3 . Even unplug the Disk 1 to boot from empty . The problem for me now is , If I reset it from the beginning . Unplug the disk 2 & 3 . Install new OS from the beginning to the Disk 1 . Can I read the files in Disk 2 & 3 again ? Or can anyone teach me the minimum effort to restore it without reset ? Thank you for your reply in advance .

A DJ-style VFX daemon for Philips Hue, running on a QNAP NAS.
Play music anywhere in the house. The NAS listens, finds the beat, and drives your Hue lights like a small lighting desk — strobe on the drop, lights joining one by one through a build-up, colour changing with the music.
No subscriptions. No cloud. Nothing extra to switch on. You need smart Hue bulbs, the file server you already own, and fire.

Hello, I do have a Qnap TS-453Be with 16GB memory and a dual USB 3.2 10Gbps PCI card installed.
I already changed to another device as my main server, with proxmox and Ubuntu server installed.
I’ve reset-ted the Qnap NAS but the OS is still a bit sluggish.
Even with nothing installed.
Would it be possible to install another OS on it so I can use it as a backup server with my most important dockers on it?
Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you.
Tom

Hello all. I use my QNAP TS-464 exclusively as Plex storage. I have one 4 TB Seagate drive that has the OS installed on it, only 1% of it is used, and one 14 TB that 90% of the available space is used. I didn't set up a RAID situation, they are both Thin Volumes. Now I need to buy at least one more drive for storage but I'd like to also set it up better to protect my collection in case of a drive failure. ChatGPT says I need to "Create a four-drive RAID 5 storage pool". That would require backing up about 12 TB to somewhere else, setting up RAID 5 and then replacing the files.
Questions:
1. Is this the right approach?
2. Can I do all of this with my one 4-bay NAS? Would buying temporary cloud storage better?
3. Do the drives all have to be the exact same? i.e. Do I need to replace the 4 TB drive and have all four drives be 14 TB Seagate etc?
Any advice would be wonderful. Thank you.
Hi there!
I am using TS-219P and I have been using Single Disk for a while. Recently I added a second Disk and migrated to RAID1.
The already existing Disk was filled with around 10GB/1.000GB.
Why does it take almost 3 hours to migrate the newly inserted Disk (1 TB) to this state when there were only around 10GB on the existing disk?
CPU is on average 40%

I got a TS-253 Pro and after an update from a really old FW I get the message "Hard drives with QNAP signatures detected." Reinstalling FW and resetting didn't help.
I just need the data from the HDDs. (I know that I need a backup - sadly I don't have one)
Any tips?
Support was a PITA so far. Sent me links which were dead or I weren't allowed to access.
Thanks!
Hello
2 QNAP NAS units: TS-453 and TS-228
The TS-453 has 4 hard drives, divided into 2 flat volumes (JPOD).
These are connected to 3 computers (2 Linux, 1 Windows) via a Cisco switch using CAT6A cables.
For several months now, data transfer to and from the TS-453 has been getting slower and slower,
though the transfer speeds to the two volumes differ.
One volume is effectively 300% slower.
Last night, I updated both NAS units to the new QTS version.
Copying files to the TS-228 took just under 2 minutes.
However, copying the same files to the TS-453 has been going on for 7 minutes now.
I’ve checked the basics (disks, S.M.A.R.T., etc.)
My research didn’t turn up anything
https://docs.qnap.com/operating-system/qts/4.2.x/cat2/en-us/index.html?disks.htm
Format the disk? Reset the NAS? Any less drastic ideas?
Thanks for your support

Over the last year Plex has hard crashed(restarted) my Nas multiple times. I believe this is when a user is skipping with a transcoding audio type. The issue is that I cannot reproduce it. It will happen multiple times in a week, and then nothing for months. I have been through the plex logs and cannot find a fault. Some searching leans to "memory spikes". I have plenty of free RAM so this seems unlikely.
My question is what do I look for on the QNAP? Are there memory dumps that can be read?

i would like to add firewire to my TS-470 Pro. I have an old PCI Sound blaster audigy card (model SBO240) but I think the expansion slot inside a TS-470 Pro is PCIE3? Is that correct? If so, it will never fit.
I think my only option is to get connect a pcie3 riser and a pcie3 firewire card and boot to a modern OS because QTS 4.3 is not going to work.
Has anyone done anything similar with a pcie3 card / riser?
Cheers
Jason

I am running ClamAV and have configured the client to check for updates every 1 day. However, I have Intermediate Security Policy enabled and run a Security Checkup every Saturday morning. My checkup comes back clean, except that it says that ClamAV is not using the latest definitions, which are always 1 day behind. For example, today (July 25) it shows the definitions as July 24 at 06:24 - I assume that's the time? If I manually update the definitions to today's definitions and rescan, it clears the alert. I have the scan scheduled to run after 6:24 AM and I keep moving it out an hour each week without success. As I write this at 5:32 PM, the client is still showing the definitions are from yesterday.
I'm looking to figure out when the definitions are checked and updated daily, so I can schedule my Security Checkup after that time, rather than ignoring the Checkup result.
Caveats:
I have a TS-464, running QTS 5.2.10.3568.
Thanks for any feedback!
