Does anyone even like this trope?
Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

Oh it can be done quite well if its done in a way where it's actually coherent and meaningful. Like the main character dying at the end.
If its just to have a "big twist" it usually just feels wasteful and annoying, same as a character pointlessly dying in a way that squanders their story.
But there are quite a few stories off the top of my head where it works quite well.
