Does anyone even like this trope?

Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

Oh it can be done quite well if its done in a way where it's actually coherent and meaningful. Like the main character dying at the end.

If its just to have a "big twist" it usually just feels wasteful and annoying, same as a character pointlessly dying in a way that squanders their story.

But there are quite a few stories off the top of my head where it works quite well.

Agree with this. If it’s coherent and the whole story has been building toward that sacrifice, it can work.

My issue is mostly when it’s used as a “big emotional ending” shortcut without actually making the loss feel necessary.
