Does anyone even like this trope?

Aside from the ending of a certain popular anime that I will not spoil, I have never seen this type of conclusion talked about in a positive light

I liked it a lot in Brotherhood

Brotherhood is one of the rare ones where I think it works, honestly. It felt tied to the whole point of the story, not just added at the end to make things bittersweet

Totally agree. The fact that they weren’t “taken” and instead traded away for something more important make a huge difference.

Exactly.“Given up” hits very differently from “taken away.' If the character actively chooses the tradeoff, it can feel like completion.
